Seriously? You actually emailed Mr. Zipes to find out about the book?

Yes, but I didn't go into the whole ARG thing. I merely said I was trying to solve a "puzzle" from a friend and began the email:

Dear Mr. Zipes,

Forgive the intrusion, and I'm sure you'll think this email odd at best, but ...

I really didn't expect a reply because (through a bit of searching) I believed him to be on leave in Rome until summer. Which he is.

Hello everybody. I don't know about the Andersen book, but there is an office building named k47 in Vienna (and inside of it, some kind of private club for businessmen). Maybe the keycard has something to do with that, since our guy seems to have traveled in Europe. Would be interesting to know more about the passports, what the name(s?) on them is, which visas there are, etc.

(BTW, this is my first post here and my first ARG. I have read the forum rules and all the FAQs, docs and other stuff i could find, I will try to conform, but please excuse me if i make mistakes Smile)

If this edition of the book won't be out until next month, maybe we're supposed to be using something else? How would the PMs get an advance copy of the book, unless this is a type of viral marketing?

I am guessing the first line of the code is going to be a name (Smith?), since it seems to be a message to someone.

I think the 1st, 2nd code refer to paragraphs in the Hans Christian Anderson (HCA) short story "The Shadow"
Quote:
1st 3:1 6:1 6:4 6:5 7:2,
2nd 2:2 19:1
3rd 8:1 5:3 7:3 17:1 3:5 21
4th AND 5th 1:1 4:1 9:2 (5) 2:5 (4) 2:5 1:1
6th 10:1 10:2 3:4 10:4 5:2 3:4 2:4 4:4
7th 20:3 2:2 3:2 1:1 6:2

1st = first paragraph, A:B where A = word and B = letter

using a text from project guttenburg
http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext99/hcaft10.txt
the first three do seem to give some words, possibly in german or other european language.

1st 3:1 6:1 6:4 6:5 7:2

ildsh

2nd 2:2 19:1
et(or ec)

3rd
8:1 5:3 7:3 17:1 3:5 21
teufeit

4th AND 5th 1:1 4:1 9:2 (5) 2:5 (4) 2:5 1:1
tfa (the) n (from) n t

ildshetteufeittfathenfromnt

However, there does appear to be a few different translations, I wonder if one of Prof. Zipes books has a translation in there, or if uses a particular translation in his studies.

Zipes has a book called Spells of Enchantment: The Wondrous Fairy Tales of Western Culture which contains the story "The Shadow" by Hans Christian Andersen. He uses the version translated by Jean Hersholt in this book, so our answer is probably in this translation. His translation can be found here.

Chippy,
I tried your theory on this translation used in one of Zipes' books on the first two word. It was Tijun ow... I see the options as paragraph:letter, word:letter and line:letter or paragraph:word to make full sentences.

Good find Endy. That looks like it may lead somewhere Smile

The K47 site, to me, either looks legit or someone did one hell of a job creating it.
Now, if I only spoke German. I ran some of it through Google Translation, but didn't find anything that I thought was useful.

Reford has updated his blog and says he's moving somewhere more private:

So I'm guessing it's a Yahoo group.

Edit: I found it.

It's his son's birthday

Signed up and am trying to help him with the other pictures from the false bottom of the case. The second picture, 100_0369 is from the Greek island of Mykonos, but that's all I was able to figure out so far.

BTW, nice find, Katie! Smile

The fifth photo, 100_0123, really reminds me of the Vatican Museum. Maybe someone could check out the patch on the guy's shirt to be sure.

I know the first one ; it's the Celsius library at Ephesus. I was there a couple years ago Smile

I also found the second one to be from the island of Mykonos.

The landscape on the third one reminds me of the lakes of northern Italia... But it could be anywhere in mediterranean Europe, i think.

Absolutely no clue about the fourth one.

I agree about the fifth one being from Vatican, the patch on the shirt shows the crossing keys and tiara, the emblem of Vatican.

The sixth is probably some kind of museum or touristic spot in mediterranean Europe too, but i don't know where. A friend of mine is very fond of architecture and art history, maybe he could identify the building.

Thanks Killian!

Can anyone make out the writing in the upper left-hand corner of the first photo? Is it graffiti?

where are these photos you speak of? Any chance of linking to them, or attaching to the posts? (it helps if you are having trouble solving them as more people can see them, and helps those who don't want to sign up to the group, and its good in case the PM changes the content of the site, and removes them)

I've signed up to the yahoo group, but the album "bottom of briefcase" is empty,
http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/March171998/photos/browse/57f7

and there's none of these pictures on the blog, that I can see...

It took me a bit to find it also, he posted it on 'links' because "stupid yahoo wouldn't load"

The only thing that is frustrating to me about this ARG so far is that the guy is a bicycle messenger and for some reason, when I think about him, I picture him as Puck from MTV's "The Real World". Ugh.
Other than that, it's fine so far. Smile
