The website only shows the first page of each chapter, so we're not going to be able to get everything we need from it. However, I was able to decode the first line of the book code. If I'm right, the initial number refers to which page of The Shadow we should use, while the number pairs indicate which word/letter to use. The first word decodes to "SMITH."

More on this after I check this book out on my lunchbreak...

Misroi, you could very well be right. I've seen at least two different translations of the story, and when I used one of them with the cipher, the last two letters in the first word (the one followed by the comma) was "TH". But the first three letters were WAY off, which makes me think we can only use one specific translation of the story.
But, that being said, I do believe the first word is going to be "Smith". I tried using that to decode the rest, but got pretty much nowhere.

Hi all,

I have been looking at this and think I have managed to translate some of that book cipher. I think the code is sentence, word:letter.

This gives something like:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Smith sf March 21 taneet candhn?? mario

the start and end look right but something gets a bit confused in the middle

I used the link that someone posted earlier to get the first page of the book

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780385189514

EDIT: Actually I've just rechecked it and I am not so convinced now Embarassed
EDIT: Done some more rechecking and think the start may be clue to San Francisco and March 21st - still unsure about the middle bit though

I'm translating the binary on the passport now.

EDIT:
What I got from the binary on the passports:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://ma
÷7&7f÷&
italia.br
V÷7Bæ6ö

I had to delete the last 4 digits to make the final line even binary, so I don't know what's up on that. I'm not sure why I got gibberish for the alternating lines; maybe it'll show up as something else in a different encoding?

I tried the URL sans gibberish and got an error message.

EDIT2:
I just noticed- John Q. Smith is apparently female. LOL

the two lines of gibberish i've figured out correspond to these values on the ascii chart--

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
÷7&7f÷&
246-067-046-067-146-246-046

V÷7Bæ6ö
126-246-067-102-145-066-148

i don't really know what that means yet, but that was the first thing i thought of when the binary didn't check out...

also, i guess i haven't given my official "i'm in" post, so here it is! Very Happy

EDIT: i ran the numbers through a octal translator and got nothin...

I'll check that out.

EDIT: As far as I can tell, there is no difference whatsoever between the two images.

Nah - I used that that one too

This is the binary sequence I got from the image

Using a different converter and C&Ping newb0y's transcription, I got this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://ma÷7&—7F÷&italia.brV†÷7Bæ6ö

EDIT: I swear the text was different on the converter. I used this one:

I tried C&Ping the URL into my browser and got this:
http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/medigate

I... don't really think it's IG, tho'. It seems like a hell of a lot of work. (I'm pretty sure it's my browser trying to get ANYTHING from the string of gibberish.)

Well clearly, there is something more to this binary. Puzzlin' time! Smile

I suppose it's a pretty good hint that binary translation wasn't the only part of the solve, b/c Redford himself said that it looked like binary.

Um... Not sure exactly what to do w/ this, but it seems like some of the 1s/0s are especially thick/thin. Think we should eliminate them and re-translate?

I wonder if maybe the rest is on the other passports? He said there were several; do the rest have this binary at the bottom?

I wonder if the symbols are ciphered. They don't look like anything one usually sees in the encryptions I've seen before, but I'm hardly an encryption expert.

EDIT: Aaand worktime's over, so I'm outie. I'll see you kids tomorrow. Don't get shot by hitmen while I'm away, mmkay?

Some zeros in the binary data are blackened... Don't know how to use that, tough.

I also wonder if there could be something hidden in the layout of the binary sequence... The zeros seem to form a pattern. I tried coloring them, linking them, and then rotating and mirroring them in various way, but i found nothing readable (look here if you want to see the (non-)result ^^ ; login : arg password : briefcase)

(By the way, i checked the EXIF metadata in some of the previous pictures, they seem to have been taken in 2005 with a Kodak digital camera... Maybe Redford is lying to us (or he forgot to mention that the pictures were on a memory card), but i think i just went a bit too far and out of the game Smile)
