The book cipher decodes to:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
SMITH
SF
MARCH 21
TARGET
PRESSENT
MARIO
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I assume SF refers to San Francisco.
The 4th and 5th sentences are combined to get "TARGET".
Instead of using the 6th sentence to create the 6th line of code, they must have forgotten they had already used the 5th sentence in the combined line of 4&5, and used that to extract the letters for line 6.
The typo in "PRESSENT" is theirs not mine.

I made some progress on the binary code I think.
I'm pretty sure that the lines are cut off on the ends.
That is, if you remove the first five characters on the second line, and the first four characters on the fourth line, there is meaningful text.
1st line:
01101000 01110100 01110100 01110000 00111010 00101111 00101111 01101101 01100001
Second line: Ignore these five characters (11110)
11100110 11100100 11010010 11100110 11101000 11011110 11100100 11000010 110
Third line:
01101001 01110100 01100001 01101100 01101001 01100001 00101110 01100010 01110010
Fourth line: Ignore these four characters (0101)
01101000 01101111 01110011 01110100 00101110 01100011 01101111 01101101
The result is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://ma
X sristora X
italia.br
X host.com
(where the X's represent missing binary data).
I still can't figure out what the right code is, but maybe this will help.

It does. Here's the place:

There is a number on the site for reservations. Maybe that's our next step?

Since we have heard of someone called Mario, maybe the complete URL is something like http://mariosristorante.....italia.br.....host.com
Does anybody know any web hosting service beginning with "br" ?
EDIT: Nytris Oxyde got it when i was typing this

Chicago area codes can either be 773 or 312 so we have 2 potential numbers
773-268-6692
or
312-268-6692
EDIT: The 773 number was disconnected, the 312 number gave me a busy signal when I called

That's odd. If they're hosting on Bravehost (a freesite), then they're also probably also using a free phone messaging service (which generally don't give busy signals). Or maybe the PM is using his own phone...?
Ah well.
Anyways... All of this information should be passed on to Redford. Maybe he'll call and make reservations... or at least be able to make sense of the information we've gathered.
And before I forget... Great solves, guys!

The "Special Occasion? Ask For Mario Or Tonio" makes me think that the "Special Occasion" is when you want someone whacked and swimming with the fishes.
Is anyone on here from Chicago? I think my gf and I might actually be going down there in a few weeks. Maybe we should pop into Mario's for a bite to eat? I don't think I will sit with my back to the door or window, though. I've seen all the "Godfather" movies...I know what can happen if you do that!

"PRESSENT" could refer to press ent ie press enter or perhaps pres sent ie present sent or president sent?
Also, anyone read his stories? Pretty creepy stuff! I'm Linda.Stiles in the yahoo group.

"Tonio Pinelli" is at the bottom. Looks like we got a last name on Tonio!
Quick Google search for Tonio Pinelli turns up only one hit that looks like it's OOG.

There also seems to be a missing image on the page where the text says "Grandpa's Hometown..."
http://mariosristoranteitalia.bravehost.com/myPictures/Naples_small.jpg
I saved it to my hard drive and tried to open it as a RAR but it says it's corrupted. Any other way this might be a clue?

Well judging by the format of the rest of the code, I'd be willing to bet it's a single word. And "TARGET PRESENT" sounds like a plausible phrase given the situation dead briefcase guy found himself in.

There is also a B&W picture that is hidden, click on the top of it and it brings up an identical home page.
Also, I have reviewed the recipe for the ravioli and it doesn't seem to be out of wack - wondering though if the calorie line at the bottom is some kind of clue?
Calories 137 Fat 2.3 g Carbs 23 g Sodium 103 mg Fiber 0.3 g.
carbs have 4 cals each g, fat 9 cals each g, no cals in sodium or fiber so the total cals is actually 112.7 there is no protien listed so who knows??

The recipe and it's associated nutritional information is copied from here . Nothing fishy as far as I can tell.

I have noticed something that may be a bit strange. A couple of the photos are of Paris (Eiffel Tower and the Louvre). Why would an italian restaurant have pictures of France ?

I've been lurking and following this so far, and was going to post about the Louvre picture. It struck me as an odd thing, and the only possible idea I could come up with was that for some reason it's just to demonstrate general European-ness. Doesn't seem very likely though! I hadn't really noticed the Eiffel Tower one.
