Someone has mentioned that the name might be a bit disrespectful to new players which would alienate them from using the guide so I've switched it back to The Puzzler's Guide. Sorry to screw everyone around.

new link below

Okay, I started the guide. You can all see it here. Basically, its just a table of contents right now.

Here's the table of contents I created to start out. I hope it can keep everyone happy.

Code:

I. Introduction to Puzzling
  1. Terminology
  2. General Puzzling Strategies
  3. ARG "First Aid"
    a. ROT
    b. Cryptograms
    c. Anagrams
II. Number Puzzles
  1. Sequence Puzzles
  2. Special Number
III. Language Puzzles
  1. Ciphers
    a. Substitution Ciphers
    b. Other Popular Ciphers
  2. Translation

Here are explanations for what should be on some of the pages:

Terminology - Commonly used terms, such as ROT, etc.
General Puzzling Strategies - Includes things such as considering possible solutions, working backwards, etc.
ARG "First Aid - the first things you try on a puzzle (see beneath it for examples)
Sequence Puzzles - Includes such things as next in sequence, odd man out, etc.
Special Number - Includes such things as square numbers, primes, etc.
Other Ciphers - Includes such things as keyword, Vigenere, etc.
Translation - Includes such things as braille, Morse code, etc.

I've got some time to kill and I'd love to get involved with this project.

I can get to work doing some of the number sequences. I might also add a section for working with number series... We did it in GCSE maths but things like using the differences to work out the factor, then again for the power.

n x =(yx-z) w etc.

I think it might be a good idea to put in little introductory paragraphs stating why you need to know stuff, and how much is essential for puzzling and how much you can learn on the fly when it comes up.

Something that might be useful is the pdf from Adrian's post on the PXCsotries developer's post which is here, but maybe it should be credited (to MIT's mystery hunt?)?

This is really cool, I feel like the start is the most difficult as I personally have been trying to avoid making it specifically about Perplex city or ARG's. You've nailed it though. Keep going!

Anything you can bring to the table would be awesome. Do it, just write whatever you're thinking it can be polished later if need be.!

This is really helpful, it just needs retyping, but I don't want to use it unless we can credit the guy who wrote it. Any way of contacting him?

You people rock!!!!

I'm familiar with Unforum and with Perplex City, as it happens. And yes,
I was indeed on ACME the year that guide was written--Bridget Copley was
running the team, but I was in fact on it, and part of the writing.

I think I can safely say that yes, you should feel free to use that
however you like--do credit it to the Mystery Hunt team ACME, but I don't
think that even any particular person needs to be credited for it.

So we're OK to use it on the wiki, just credit Mystery Hunt team ACME. It might be good to link to the MIT mystery hunt site here as well.

keep it simple

I just wonder if there is a good way to emphasize(i) not to overlook the obvious and (ii)not to jump into making things more complicated than they are?

I vaguely remember a puzzle trail which had us all stumped for a while by just having a page that was pink. Nothing else. The answer, I think, was "fuchsia"

I know there are often easy things that we miss. An example from PPC was the libraryofbabel site, which we knew about, or at least we knew that the library of babel was connected with Combed Thunderclap, well before it was found. We pretty much had to have that one handed to us, months after it was put up. ( I think the PM chat mentioned that it was up as early as wave 3?)

Maybe a corollary of this is to not expect or rely on the PMs feed us answers, which can tend to make us, the players, passive.
