Where's the beef? What is happening to the players?

Maybe this Header should be titled where/what is happening to people that are playing the NB game? So far, I have personally witnessed three different people who were members (but no longer members) start doing some fairly strange things regarding this game. I have wondered if the rev's D.I.D. caused a rift in their personalities or if they decided to simply bless us by making the game a bit more interesting and by adding their own characters to Selene's and the journal's characters. So my question is: is this normal player behavior for ARG types of games or is this something that is unique to the NB game? Rolling Eyes

Seriously? I am so glad you brought this up. My opinion on the answer to that question would fill a sociology major's thesis. However, I'd like to express a little of it. I think there are two forces at work that apply to the Noahboddy players. One is Team Formation and dynamics. Even though there are probably well over 100 players, way to large for a team, only a select group seem to be posting and working together to solve the puzzle(s). The stages of team development are fairly apparent. Such as storming. And that in my humble opinion is normal, though not always pleasant.

The second (and I don't know the exact word for this) is group identification. As in the need for people to make themselves into or just like the group they admire or wish to become a part of. In the case of the game Noahboddy that would be Team Noahboddy as personified by the reverend and Lady Selene. Or and I think this is a strong possibility the above mentioned group of players. How far can (or should ) an individual go in this persuit and still have his behavior considered normal? Certainly posting messages, working along with the frequent posters to solve puzzles silently, as a potential member or as a member of the group is normal. Immersing oneslf in the game and taking on the persona of individual characters or potential characters While still consciously aware that IT IS A GAME is probably normal. I would personally draw the line at dangerous or threatening, or maybe a simple overreaction to provacation. If someone steps on your toe you don't react by whacking them with a sledge hammer, but normal could be patient explanations like "you hurt me" to ignoring it to moving your toe out the way, or even stepping on their toe if you believe the act was intentional and have proof of that. I haven't seen anything really bad with any serious player of the Noahboddy game.

ARG is a new deal brought to us by the internet. It's precedent's like
"Dungeon's and Dragon's and Zork did not have the capabilities of this much communication between individuals who would never interact unless given this technology. I think we went down the rabblit hole with Alice and are just going to have to see. However meanwhile because things aren't going all that well in my life a little escapism is just the ticket for me and I intend to enjoy the ride. With the knowledge planted squarely in my mind that this is just a game and team Noahboddy is providing a service. So bring on the puzzles. I may not solve them the way you expected but that's what guinea pigs are for. To get rid of the bugs in any system, iron out the kinks and develope the norms.

Thank you Team Noahboddy and all my fellow players.

Very Happy Very Happy

OMG! If only you knew how funny that is! Are you psychic!?? Because a Thesis is exactly what I AM doing! Actually, is is about communications ( ARG players), but there is a definite sociological component to my Thesis also. Shhhhhh...don't tell.....OK??
