Mail from Guy at MC
Clarification of some questions

I mailed Guy at MC recently with a few questions about things that are outstanding from Season 1 and he replied with the following words of wisdom:

1. Silver leitmarks - what gives?!

Guy "Hair of a lovely sixties girl" P wrote:
Silver leitmarks are lovely things of great specialness, and we've had
them here at Mind Candy HQ for some time... since before the Cube was
found, in fact! We've taken a little extra time to present them to their
recipients extra-nicely, but sadly we've "experienced some supply-side
issues", which has delayed things to what can only be described as a
crazy extent. We've been told (not for the first time) that things will
be ready "very soon."

2. Season 2 leitmarks and season 1 leitmarks - what gives here too?

GP - MC wrote:

We've had to hold back on making an official announcement about this
before now as we've been deciding on the issue internally. However, I
can confirm that we won't be continuing to award leitmarks for Season 2
or Season 1 cards solved from now on. If you're missing a leitmark from
Season 1, though, do get in touch with us at the usual address and we'll
issue you with a replacement.

For what it's worth, we had lots of ambitous plans for all sorts of
goodies and prizes for Season 2's puzzle portal (as referenced on the
back of the warm-up cards) but there are horrendous legal problems
Stateside. Because the puzzle cards are a physical product, any
association with a prize is a pretty bad deal lest we become deemed "a
lottery", at which point all kinds of hideous extra laws come into
effect. We continue to research our options and find exciting ways to
reward our most dedicated puzzlers, however!

3. Suppliers list: Do you have a complete list of suppliers? The old www.pxc.com one seemed a lot more comprehensive and there are often questions about where to get stuff. Then I directed him to this

Guy because he's worth it wrote:
Resurrecting the Store Locator in it's previous form isn't really on the
cards, sadly, because it was becoming difficult for us to manage and
keep up to date. But I *love* the idea that the community can keep it's
own up-to-date list, preferably in a self-maintaining crowd sourced way
that doesn't require too much work from any one person. If it's OK, I'll
have a look at it a little later today and work out how we can promote
Zeesource prominently on our website, add our own data to it and so on.
What an awesome idea.

Finally Guy added some other bits and pieces with which to mop our fevered brows:
Guy "son of Granier" P wrote:

Overall, it would be remiss of me not to concede that the Perplex City
experience has been less than you're entitled to expect over the past
month or so. We underestimated the challenges we faced in launching our
new website, and regret that it's been less fun for you than we hoped.

So, how are we aiming to improve? Well, in a week or so we'll have a new
developer joining Mind Candy, who'll be concentrating on the new site
for a while. Our internal bug & to-do list for PerplexCity.com is 110
items long (and climbing!) so we're very much aware of all the
improvements and changes you'd like to see, and have carefully listened
to all the feedback we've received so far. We hope to make great
progress before too long. Also, some of our to-do's involve adding new
features behind the scenes, which will help us run things more effectively.

As for Perplex City Stories, well, we've already announced our agonizing
decision to delay the launch. We've got ambitious plans and want you to
enjoy the most flawless and fun experience possible. We've learned from
our mistakes, and this time we want to make sure everything is
completely ship-shape before we launch. It's going to be a very
interesting game, though, so do check back with us then. Of course,
there's also the Developer's Blog at http://blog.perplexcitystories.com/
where we'll be posting titbits and teasers on our progress at building
what we like to call ARG2.0.

I edited my questions a bit to make me sound less waffly, but Guy's replies to each are as is.

Not too many surprises there, but it's good to have some clarification on things that have left people a bit..... well, perplexed recently.

I think I said before that it would have been nice for people to have some warning about discontinuing the leitmarks, and that still stands. It's a shame, and an annoyance for those affected.

At least we've been given information about some of the problems they've faced (about various things), and how they're anticipating future ones, rather than vague wishy-washy flannel.

It'll be really helpful if they can promote that Zeesource map, as it will hopefully encourage more people to add and update it. (The cynical part of me says they'll do it as it's probably very little effort for them, and could help them sell more shiny things. The non-cynical part says they'll do it to add another facet the community and togetherness and helping-each-other-out-ness of the whole enterprise). Either way, it'll be a Good Thing.

I do not understand why they are no longer giving out letimarks. Aren't they just pins? They should already have them all made, so it sounds like they're just going to waste. There are only a finite number of points available to earn them. So lack of supply should not be an issue.

The only reason I am troubled by the lack of letimark. is I really liked the idea that you could get actual physical things you could hold in your hot little hand as a result of playing the game. Now it seems like they are headed away from this. If there is no tangible benefit for solving the cards, the points seem meaningless if you're not already in the top twenty. Realistically, I couldn't catch up at all even if I solved all season two cards right now.

It is true that in the United States state lottery commisions regulate the purchase of items which are involved in games of chance. But this should only be the case if the prize is money, or something valuble (like a car). If the prize were some sort of swag, there would be no problem.

I do not use any other forums for this game, but if someone wants to tell mind candy that the way around this is to make [whatever is mucking them up] a sweepstakes. Bascailly all you have to do is say that no purchase is necessary and people can request a free entry form/thingie/whatever-they-would-use. But you can still put [entires] on future cards. Even if people buy them.

Another route would be to do another sort of treasure hunt as in Season One. Even if the cube had been in America, no regulations would have applied as purchase was not necessary to enter. Purchase might you a rather large advantage, a clue of some sort, but anyone could theoretically find the object of the hunt and claim the prize.

I just wonder if everyone at MC agrees/knows what is going on with leitmarks. It seems like every time we hear something, it's through an [e-]mail, and it contradicts whatever we last heard.

What I'd really like is an official statement (somewhere on the website) saying "We'll send out leitmarks for any cards solved by [some date in the future]. After that, we will replace lost or damaged leitmarks only while our supplies last." That way, everyone gets the chance to redeem cards they have in their possession, we don't have to keep contacting them for clarification, and everyone can be on the same page.

Y'see, this is why I still have faith.

They admitted, flat out, they've been buggy, they're sorry, and they're fixing it as best they can. Honesty, people: a commodity still worth its weight.

I still say, "Why release the unfinished product?", but they figured that out at this point, so there it is.

I believe we'll be happy once the kinks are worked out.

While I'm upset that leitmarks may not be available anymore, I can understand the decision. I think a lot of people are forgetting the logistics behind sending them out.

It's relatively easy to do if your player base is small, but as the game becomes more popular and the player base increases, the logistics of sending out leitmarks becomes something of a nightmare. I mean, it's one thing to send a mass-mailing postcard that is the same for everyone, but it's another to send different products to different people at different times.

My guess is that it's become something that's too hard to handle in-house, and that Mind Candy has decided not to hire another company to do it at this time. Which is a shame, because I really do want a way to acquire the season one leitmarks I hadn't gotten yet. But then again, if it means more manpower and money to put together some truly awesome puzzles and events, then I can live with that.

From what I understand, the logistics of awarding prizes are easier here in the US then they are in the UK (some states excepted). I'm also a regular player on Pogo.com and constantly see their different attempts to give UK players a similar experience without running afoul of their laws. (Pogo games, for subscribed members, usually end in a "jackpot spin" that awards Pogo tokens [an in-site currency] or prizes like a mug or a hat, but can award a cash prize. In addition, tokens can be turned in towards tickets for a daily/weekly/monthly cash prize.)

The UK more or less open to prize give aways like this (to open some times see ITV the mint)

I only see this on the UK news so I don't know every thing about it, they just passed a law in the US that stops banks from seeding/receiving money from internet gaming sites. PXC may be falling fowl of this?

There is a way around this. MC says that prizes are only open to players in the UK then if a overseas player wins then put down an address of a friend in the UK who posts it on to them. ok that not a perfect idea but its a start.

Why must the US always ruin everything. (Even though I'm from the US.) Now I'm all sad inside because theres no S2 Leitmarks.
