[Grey District] Drug Choice [SOLVED]
in White Line

Quote:
It is time to roll the dice and see if we can't shake up business as usual for Fujimoto's soulless minions. Tonight, Defensecorp Deputy Chief of Information Gathering Nick Tollins is giving a big speech at the Ivory Monocle, a social club for Fujimoto's bigwigs. Mr. Tollins is an embodiment of everything that wrong with the world today, which naturally makes him a big hit in Defensecorp. Most people think that he is next in line to make Chief of Security, and that would be a disaster. You think people don't have any freedom these days? Judging from his record, Tollins would take things to a whole new level of tyranny. He is just the kind of rising star in Defensecorp that we don't need to make it to the top. Tonight he is going to lay out his plan for the future of the corp and shake a lot of hands. There is a notable minority within the corp that think he doesn't have what it takes, and they are looking for an opening to pour on the criticism. This is huge night for his whole career, and thus our whole future.

Here is the deal: we have an agent who is working in the kitchen at the Ivory Monocle. If you can get her a "special ingredient", she thinks she can slip it into Tollins' dish at the beginning of the night and then skip town. This might be just the chance we need. The following is a list of substances that my contact in the Medicorp offices over in Red can get a hold of. I don't know what the hell these things are, and my contact downtown isn't much more than a janitor with quick hands, a weakness for moonshine, and medium security clearance. That leaves you.

You have some options: we go the subtle route and try and shake up Tollins for the night, you know; ruin his big evening. Maybe there is some way to get him a little drowsy or dizzy for tonight; just something to insure that he doesn't impress too many folks. The other option is to take him out once and for all. This is after all a war, and that means casualties. If we were to kill him right now that could save us a lot of trouble down the line. Like I said, your call. Pick one out, and I'll have our guy downtown drop some off with our agent in the kitchen. Choose wisely; this is a golden opportunity that won't come along again.

The image lists the following drugs.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

disodium inosinate - food additive (like MSG)
magnesium glutamate - used in low sodium meat, no side effects
ammonium acetate - harmful: May irritate the G. I. tract. Abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur. Ingestion of large amounts may result in diuresis and systemic ammonia poisoning. Normal human subjects infused with ammonium acetate exhibit flaccidity of facial muscles, tremor, generalized discomfort, anxiety and impairment of motor performance. If he has liver disease, it could be lethal.
sodium tetraborate - harmful: fertility problems
acetylated distarch phosphate - food additive for thickening stuff
sodium flouroacetate - rat poison. no specific cure
butylated hydroxytolvene - antioxidant
diphenhydramine hydrochloride - Benadryl: sleeping and delerium
neohesperidin dihydrochalcone - artificial sweetener
acesulfame potassium artificial sweetener

The bold option (I believe--that's untested) kills him, so it's counted as a wrong answer. The italicized option does not, and you receive the following message.

Quote:
We agree. Killing him is not the answer. Good job
(positive karma, 300 credits, 4 prestige)

I tried ammonium acetate. I though it would be good if he crapped himself in front of everyone. Here' my result!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Who's side are you on anyway? That would not have the desired effect

You have received negative Karma.
(you get to try again! WOOT!)

Since you can still try other options, I also tried the first option, disodium inosinate, and the rat poison. I received the same response for those two choices as I did for the ammonium acetate. Oh well!

Very interesting

**Edit is just an addition to the spoiler**

Sorry about that, everybody--I was just unsure if the killing option (rat poison) would be rewarded. Changing the title to reflect it.

My guess is that this puzzle was set to establish the first of the two possible correct answers as the only correct answer. After all, if either answer worked there would be continuity problems in the story. So I bet if the first person to solve the puzzle had picked rat poison then the rat poison would have been the only correct answer, so that the in-game outcome would remain consistent with all player choices.
