[INTERACTION] Tara Mercer

Tara's been fairly flirtatious so far, it seems.

My husband is culturecorp... well that and the others. Got any requests? I'll dig it up for you. I'm a little bored tonight. Mmm... make that VERY bored tonight. tee hee.

So yes folks, Thomas Mercer, Red District senator, is married to Tara. That didn't stop her from flirting a lot, though.

All these sexy little green men talking to me. Hmmm.

Even Bishop's gotten into the act, it seems.

Sounds a bit doubtful too, she asked me if I could do it over again what would I do differently. I believe we can convince her to help us.

Here are my messages with her:
TaraMercer: Hi there! I'm sure you've had enough fun watching everyone else link up to the interface, welcome to the circus!!! If you need or want anything just let me know.
Her Reply:
TaraMercer says: "anything" huh? I just might have to test that a little bit.
My reply:
TaraMercer: I am always a willing servant to those who make life interesting. You seem to be a pretty interesting woman!
her reply:
TaraMercer says: Thats funny, I was about to say the same thing about you guys. I get kind of bored in my little prison. Tell me about yourself... please?
And my final reply:
Prison??? What is a beautiful woman doing being trapped in a prison? Anyways, I'm a huge music fan. I help promote 2 local bands. It keeps me busy when I'm not working. Wanna get a laugh? Since most people can't drive properly, there are a ton of auto accidents. We have insurance companies to help pay for all the damages. I work for one of them and I get to take all the intial information. I hear some weird stories everyday. I also am a great cook Wink

Me: I could certainly use some fun, Ms. Mercer.
Her: Stick with Tara doll - it's more your style.
Me: Is it now? Do tell, do tell.

More from her:

Quote:
To TaraMercer: Hello again, Miss Mercer.
I was wondering if you could be so kind as to tell me a bit about MediCorp if you have anything to share. I am... well... lets say that I am curious about the operation and how it runs. Especially in regards to its evaluations of more radical elements. Or perhaps concerned is the right word. It is hard to really say.

I understand the subject might be boring to you of course, or something you speak about often. So perhaps we could speak about something more pleasant as well. I could really just use the help in laying a few ghosts to rest.

- Agent Emily Hook
- Presumed Guilty

Quote:
TaraMercer says: I wish I could refer you to one of my husband's secretaries, but I guess I'll have to do. Medicorp's been around about as long as Deus City, my husband became the youngest senator and the only one not of the "original" group of senators. Of course that means he's the only one who isn't an old fart too. You probably already know that everything works now with and because of the subcue chip? Well Thomas created it... or at least modified the pre-war designs to be usable in a practical way. Instant fame, instant fortune, instant buy-in to the corporate senate. Marrying him just made sense. That answer your question love?

Quote:
To TaraMercer: Hmmm. Well that certainly makes sense to me. I imagine you must have already been in a fairly noteworthy position to land that sort of trophy husband? Stunning looks aside, what was your "in" to the world of corporate high society prior to marrying Senator Mercer? As for answering my question... to be honest I am primarily interested in the psychological evaluations they perform, mostly on those who have been detained. Let us say that I have a personal investment in knowing what goes on during the process and that despite my often concrete resolve some part of me is still made nervous by thought of such a thing.

But I am being a little too honest for my own good, perhaps. Truth be told I am also interested in the art world of the future. Despite my radical political activities I was originally a spoken word entertainer performing under the name Trainwreck. It involved - and occasionally still involves - lots of body paint and improvised concertina music, things like that. It is where I developed my talent for rhetoric. So both art and entertainment have always been my first twin loves. Is bohemia still alive and well in 2037?

- Agent Emily Hook

Then independent of that communication I almost immediately received:

Quote:
TaraMercer says: Hey! I just got an automated message telling me you have a flag on your profile - who are you exactly?! Its going to be a real pain to have that purged! Thanks for nothing hon!

Quote:
To TaraMercer: Miss Mercer.

A flag? That would be news to me, though I have been aware for some time that Assistant Director Prince has been having me investigated for one reason or another. It would seem that my politics are far too radical for his taste although he must have known that before hiring me to the agency. Sometimes I wonder why those in 2037 do not behave with the greater perspective thirty years of time should provide them. I made a little speech which may or may not have resulted in me being apprehended and evaluated by your trophy husband's MediCorp doctors, and also produced a video which Prince may or may not be aware of. Finally I am associated with a certain group known as the Union for what that is worth. I personally also suspect that he is watching me due to my pursuance of a young girl named Jenna Jansen who seems to have been cleaned from all social records in your time.

That being said I am hardly the villain they may or may not portray me to be. Even Special Agent Fujimoto (here in 2007) seems to realize this to some extent and we have been in communication with each other in bursts, busy man that he is. Still I apologize if my communication may have gotten you into some sort of trouble. When you responded to my first communication it felt implied that you know who I am. I see now that the mistake was mine and I understand if you cannot continue further communication, though I admit some disappointment.

I sent her a message, just to say "hi" basically and ask what people do for fun in the future. Her reply:

Quote:
I like a good video feed. Culturecorp is the only game in town so I fell in love with the glamor and gloss a few years back. You know how it is though. I'm kind of bored. I need something REAL. I'm not sure any of the local feeds qualify, and most of the old-world videos bore me because they are too escapist. I used to be a fan of the holoworld bistros and the projection channels, but even the interactive stuff is just too fake. You know? Sometimes late at night I think about sneaking out, de-activating my chip and just going out into the wasteland to see whats it's REALLY like. How I wish I could step through this interface and just grab hold of one of you. I sometimes think I'd slap you for being so shortsighted and sometimes think I'd kiss you for being so ALIVE! I just don't know anymore. I think I need a drink. I'll talk with you later.

What I find interesting is her statement "...de-activating my chip..." Given her husband invented the subcue chip, perhaps it might be good to pursue this line. However, I'm going to take it somewhat slow, given that apparently her communications are being monitored, and I don't want to risk an encrypted message since she IS red and her hubby is fairly high in the hierarchy. So I took the subtle approach and asked her about getting a drink, saying I thought it was illegal and they closed the speakeasy in grey district, but that I guess "Where there's a will, there's a way."

Slyfingers--that is the very line I've been pursuing. I was going to wait until I got more conversation in, but here's what I have.

I guess a lot of the stuff I'm used to would seem really weird to you! I used to be a fan of the holoworld bistros and the projection channels, but even the interactive stuff is just too fake. I think I know how you feel. I ended up moving to the other side of the planet (without really knowing the language) just to get a taste for something different. I've had my share of difficulties because of it, but am glad I did so. Not forever--I don't think I could take that, but it's been nice for a while.

I'm surprised the Red District doesn't have a vacation package where you DO go off the system and rough it for a while...not OFF THE SYSTEM off the system, since that could be dangerous if something happens, but maybe restricted use while you're going out to one of the safer areas of the Wasteland. Still escapist, maybe, but it helps to wrap your brain around your priorities (I probably sound like some crazed hippie there).

Hearing about holoworld bistros and projection channels does sound weird to me, but it's also exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm always on the lookout for new ways to spin a tale, and its nice to hear I'll have a lot to look forward to in the future.

Vacation packages? I'll have to mention that one to Thomas! Thanks baby!

You might even want to suggest taking Thomas along--I can only imagine it's hard on the marriage to have him always be "on call", so even the time you have together really isn't yours. Some time where both of you are effectively cut off from the hustle, bustle, and tedium of the day-to-day could do wonders.

I've been talking with Detective Kropp, and it seems like your husband has a smart and efficient staff that could handle whatever comes up.

On a different note, what do you do when you're not busy with the role of wife of a senator? (And yes, I know that can be quite the handful of a job) Or rather, what did you do for a living before marrying?

Sorry, I was gonna wait to post that until something definite came of it since Tara seems quite talkative.

I would be careful though. She is in every way the classic definition of a femme fatale. This makes her beneficial and an ally but also a dangerous one to have.

I've had a very similar interaction with her as well. I too didn't want to post it until I got something concrete out of her. Including this:

Quote:

I just don't know anymore. I'll talk with you later.

To which I replied:
Quote:
To TaraMercer:Well I can guarantee one thing - if I'm still around in your time I'll be happy to help you sneak out.

I understand how "the right thing" can wind up being boring and/or unfulfilling. It's happened all through history. From what I see on this end of the interface, Deus City does not strike me as a place that is full of life. That is why I am trying to "assist" some folks who feel the same way. There is not much I can do from 30 years in the past other than working with my present-day counterparts and some minor tasks for my future counterparts. I think it would behoove my future compatriots to have some local assistance from someone who may be interested in spicing up their life? What do you think?

She hasn't responded yet.

I suspect she is a definite plant. We are supposed to "recruit" her but to what purpose remains to be seen. She could either rat us all out or she could be very helpful.

Or, we could pump her for info on subQs.

This all goes back to the "God-Killer," who just struck again today. Now, I've got some concerns about this guy. First off, after two deaths, his MO changes. I'm no profiler, but from what I understand, this RARELY happens. In the first two, the chip was removed prior to death, and there exists evidence that in the first murder, his chip was used posthumously.

In the third "murder," the chip remained inside the victim. It's entirely possible that this third murder was just used as a cover to murder Ms. Jansen due to her dissenting opinion for her daughter's future. (Poor Jenna.)

The most recent death holds two possibilities. Cynthia Patish either had a very old chip, implanted in her about thirteen years ago, or she never had one. Since money's tight in the Grey Sector, perhaps the Resistance offers money to people who are willing to sell their HFID chips to Resistance members.

To solve this stuff, we need to know more about subQs; how they work, how they track movement, and how they can be fooled. Who better than the wife of the guy who invented it?

Poor Jenna indeed. I am telling you, she is much more important to all of this than anyone seems to think.

On Tara: She would definitely be the ideal person to follow through on that with. However she is not the kind to offer something for nothing and she is a very strong personality. You will have to be very careful in the way you deal with her I suspect. Remember, femme fatale. Remember why the whole "fatale" word is in there in the first place.

To TaraMercer: Greetings, Tara Mercer. I am interested to speak to a media professional of Deus City, as I am involved myself in guerrila media agit-prop here in the 'old world'. As you may have heard, I seem to gain a reputation in the future as a prophet. Can you tell me about how the media structure functions in Deus City? I would also be interested to learn more about the city's information architecture. I would like to further spread my messages of peace, hope, and universal bliss within the Omega Point to the be-nighted people of Deus City; it seems like you might be a person who knows such things.

Nothing really new here.

Interesting development- in my typical rambling way, I sent this message to Tara
Quote:
Ah, a woman of means! "It's good to be the king!" That's one of my favorite quotes from a little movie we call "History of the World, Part 1." If it survived to your time, watch it.

Still, it seems like there is a fair amount of excitement in the future, what with the God-Killer running around, the issues with transmissions in the data feeds, and subcue chips having all the "issues" lately.

Still, historically people of means have found ways to step out on their own, after all what good is money if you can't use it to better your own life? (A belief I'm sure you can appreciate!) I know here, I like to "step off the grid," so to speak, by turning off my computer, cell phone, pager, pda, hopping in my car and driving to a park and hiking for a day or so, living off the land. Gives me a zest for life that dealing with the modern world drains. (Oops, to you it must seem a quaint time!)

Well, if you need anything from our time to liven up yours, let me know. While certainly not rich, I do have a certain amount of resources available for fun stuff. Who knows, maybe I could make you a "time capsule" and bury it somewhere for you to find in your time? Wouldn't that be a hoot?

And I got this reply:
Quote:
A time capsule! What a wonderful idea! Let's do it! Where do you live hon? Maybe I can get one of the patrols to pick it up or somebody making a wasteland run?

I find the "..somebody making a wasteland run" part interesting.
So, she wants something from our time, and since I am conveniently located in Dallas, TX we now have a way to bribe her. So think of what we want to know and what we should offer.

 A proposition from Tara?
OMG

Quote:
To TaraMercer: Hello again. Sitting here listening to some classic Old World music, the brand new (to us) NIN - Year Zero album, an entirely appropriate backdrop to my time in Deus City. Do you still remember Nine Inch Nails, the genius of Trent Reznor, or has all that subversive Gothik music that I so love been 'recycled'?

I found your message fascinating. You describe a common phenomenon in authoritarian societies. When freedom of speech and creativity are suppressed, culture stagnates, producing ever more hollow spectacle. I hate to tell you, darling, but you have devoted your life to a sham Sad sorry. Now if you're looking for real excitement, guerilla media agit-prop is the place to be. Though in a place like Deus City, it could mean less excitement and more torture and drugs courtesy of MediCorp.

Oh, and thx for the compliment! An androgynous Gothboi like me has to work double hard to look this good. Wink

Quote:
TaraMercer says: Ok, I'll admit it. You and your world gets my juices flowing.
I've deactivated the tracking of our little conversation here so that we can talk freely. I need a favor hon - and I think you just might be the one to get it for me considering your tendencies and abilities. What do you say?

Zow. Tara Mercer can deactivate the AI filters at will. Tara Mercer can get stuff out of the Waste Land. Tara Mercer gots her some *push*.
Quote:
To TaraMercer: Interested. Have to know what is being asked of me first - and what's in it for me, how it's going to advance *my* agenda. Do tell...

I've been talking to Tara too!!

Quite flirty to start with, obviously using the fun profile as my way in.

Been trying to work out why the corporate eighters story was brought to light - especially at the same time as this new character, and still haven't, but took a punt on a long shot, and sent a message very cryptically making a suggestion, she replied but said little saying she would be chatting to me later.
