New-ish to ARGs, looking for upcoming ARGs.
So a LARPer walks into an ARG..

I'm feeling like the epitome of a bad joke.
"So a LARPer walks into an ARG."

Hi,
Name's Chris. Long-time LARPer. Sorta new to ARGs.
(Also, an avid T-Hunt player (MIT Puzzle Hunt) if I can ever find a group to participate with)

I say sorta because I was an avid follower of Push, NV, knew about the Beast (by way of Cloudmakers and the resulting press), wanted to play Majestic, and missed out on ilovebees.

So, I'm aware of ARGs but never got to seriously participate.

So I have a few questions:

1) How much of a time sink can an ARG be?

(I'm up for a good adventure but concerned that limitations on time will lead to a frustrating experience, especially when it comes to collective experiences.)

2) Are there some upcoming and new ARGs around the bend?

(Not that an existing ARG isn't fun.. but as a LARPer, let me say that catching up on "all that has happened before" can be a bit daunting, especially when debating whether to vest into the plot or not.)

3) Saw the rating criteria in this forum, which leads me to my next question: Of the upcoming / new (or newly-started) ARGs, does anyone have a breakdown on puzzles, interaction, and potential community size?

Any help is appreciated!

You can choose how much time you spend in most games -- if you're really into puzzle solving, you might miss out if you're not around for long periods, because that tends to happen really fast, but unless you care about being the first person to solve a puzzle, I'd say that other than interactions, which you obviously can't control time-wise, you can control your pace.

Different ARGs also run at different paces.

Well, BSU is the newest currently-running ARG, I think (we started playing it on Monday), but an immensely popular indie ARG, Sammeeeees, looks like it'll have a sequel launching soon (and presumably there won't be too much catching up to do on the first game).

I'd also suggest watching our News and Rumors forum (at the top of the main index) because that's where discussion on new games usually begins, or, if you don't have time to do that (there tend to be a lot of false alarms), watch ARGNet, the main ARG news site, which generally reports on new games. (When our overburdened volunteer staff can get their articles in on time, that is. Wink )

Anyway, welcome (back)! Smile Hope you find a game to your liking.

Yes, do join the [BASt] game, currently promoted to our Potentials forum. The Cthulhu LARP community has already begun the cross-over.

Time sink? I'm at the office right now! (tsk, tsk.) You'll be reading the in-game forum frequently, but you can keep up on your own time -- don't worry about maintaining a real-time pace just yet.

Welcome!

A, Role-player, LARPer and a ARGer walk into a bar, the Roleplayer rolls a 15 on a D20 and asks for Vodka and coke, the LARPer forgets the complex rules and just asks for a beer. ARGer ask for TRM ZMW GLMRX, ZMW Z YZT LU XIRKH and they look at him like his the odd one.

The sing of the ARGer is not if they got the joke but if they know what was ordered. Confused

Back to the point,

The LARPer replies:
Did you ask the bartender for Beefeater or Tanqueray?

(And do you mind if I steal a chip?)

World Without Oil is starting on the 30th (though the pregame has already started). It looks to be really well done, and it has role-playing aspects that may (or may not Smile ) appeal to you. Check it out in the ARGs With Potential forum.

But definitely help out with BAST. It's the most recent, and has a Lovecraft theme!

"...and a bag of crips?"

the sign of an ARGer is finding typos in a puzzle and wondering if it is a further clue ;)
