[10:11] bornfairdiefair: Hello? Anyone there?
[10:11] JWtheFourth: Yes
[10:12] bornfairdiefair: Hi. My name's John Fairborn. You wouldn't happen to know a man called Paradox would you?
[10:13] JWtheFourth: Can't say that I do. How come?
[10:14] bornfairdiefair: He said not to tell the police.. You won't tell the police, will you?
[10:14] JWtheFourth: I'm not the police and I won't tell the police.
[10:14] bornfairdiefair: Right..
[10:15] bornfairdiefair: He's...kidnapped my son.
[10:15] JWtheFourth: !
[10:16] JWtheFourth: I'm sorry to hear that. Is there a way I can help?
[10:16] bornfairdiefair: His name is James.
[10:17] bornfairdiefair: He has only contacted me once.. gave me the name "Paradox" and said "I do not want a ransom." Or something like that.
[10:17] JWtheFourth: Then what does he want?
[10:17] bornfairdiefair: I don't know..
[10:18] *** "bornfairdiefair" signed on at Fri Apr 20 10:18:10 2007.
[10:18] bornfairdiefair: Hang on..
[10:18] JWtheFourth: Sure.
[10:18] bornfairdiefair: Got a phone call coming through.
[10:18] bornfairdiefair: *has one of those "have a phonecall whilst online" deals"
[10:19] bornfairdiefair: Could you hold on a second?
[10:19] JWtheFourth: Yah.
[10:20] bornfairdiefair: Oh shiitake!
[10:20] bornfairdiefair: It's him!
[10:20] JWtheFourth: What did he say?
[10:20] bornfairdiefair: I'm writing what he is saying..
[10:20] bornfairdiefair: He's only just started talking.. hang on.
[10:20] bornfairdiefair: *will transcribe*
[10:21] bornfairdiefair: "Listen closely if you want to see your son again..."
[10:21] bornfairdiefair: And now it's a lot of code.
[10:21] bornfairdiefair: Or summit.
[10:22] JWtheFourth: Try to write down what you can of it
[10:22] JWtheFourth: or record it
[10:22] bornfairdiefair: Recording the code.
[10:22] bornfairdiefair: Lucky i got a microphone port..
[10:22] bornfairdiefair: It's off.
[10:23] bornfairdiefair: Right..
[10:24] bornfairdiefair: It's not a lot, I can transcribe it quickly.
[10:24] bornfairdiefair: Erm.. Make that a lot.
[10:24] JWtheFourth: If you want to send me a file, [my email address] can work.
[10:24] JWtheFourth: Or maybe upload it somewhere
[10:25] bornfairdiefair: My computer's a weird one.. I can't save the audio file sadly. But I will send you the transcript
[10:25] JWtheFourth: Okay
[10:27] bornfairdiefair: Good grief..
[10:27] JWtheFourth: What?
[10:27] bornfairdiefair: How the hell does this Paradox fellah think i'm gonna be able to decode this?! If it's even a code!
[10:28] JWtheFourth: I have some friends that are good at this type of thing.
[10:28] bornfairdiefair: Really?
[10:28] bornfairdiefair: Get 'em!
[10:28] JWtheFourth: Yah.
[10:28] bornfairdiefair: I'm rather secretive when it comes to my family.. But seeing as this kidnapper likes things like this. Maybe I should let you all into my life..untill my son is back.
[10:30] bornfairdiefair: What's your email again?
[10:31] bornfairdiefair: [my email address]
[10:32] bornfairdiefair: sente
[10:35] JWtheFourth: Just got it.
[10:36] JWtheFourth: Okay
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
[10:36] JWtheFourth: The first part is hexadecimal
[10:36] JWtheFourth: Three-part sporting acheivement smothered in it

[10:36] bornfairdiefair: Right..
[10:38] bornfairdiefair: No clue what that could be.
[10:38] JWtheFourth: if it's an anagram, it's a mean one
[10:38] JWtheFourth: feels like a riddle.
[10:41] bornfairdiefair: Maybe your friends can help?
[10:41] JWtheFourth: Yah, I'm hitting them up now.
[10:41] bornfairdiefair: *sighes*
[10:41] JWtheFourth: Is there a way I can get in touch with you?
[10:41] JWtheFourth: Or is AIM the best?
[10:41] bornfairdiefair: You can email me.. AIM's the only other ting i use really.
[10:42] bornfairdiefair: Gotta go now.
[10:42] JWtheFourth: Okay
[10:42] bornfairdiefair: Work calls. It lets me take my mind off things..

Some additional help

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[13:34] bornfairdiefair: Hey
[13:34] bornfairdiefair: Any luck with the riddle?
[13:34] JWtheFourth: people are talking about it
[13:35] JWtheFourth: hat trick would be a triple achievement, as would a triple crown and a turkey
[13:35] JWtheFourth: the smothered part is a bit of a loop
[13:35] bornfairdiefair: My son was reading a book before he got kidnapped..the riddle reminds me of something inside it. Incase it helps, the book is by Charlie Higson, name is "Double Or Die"

hmmm..... from the Wikipedia entry on the book:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
With kidnap, violence, explosions, and murder, it was no ordinary weekend. But then, James Bond is no ordinary boy...In a North London cemetery, a professor is kidnapped at gunpoint. A suspicious letter crammed with cryptic clues arrives at Eton. To decipher the deadly mystery, James Bond must take a series of dangerous gambles. Once the code is cracked, he has just 48 hours to save the professor from the dark forces that threaten to destroy them both. And if the professor can't escape, it's not only his future under threat. It's the rest of the world's...

Were this not an ARG, I'd say the kid got a few ideas and kidnapped himself... Wink

Hey, it's still possible. That was certainly my first thought! Or, maybe was thinking about doing it and shared his thoughts with someone who also thought it was a good idea...and really snatched him.. Erm, I think my mind has too many loose strings Rolling Eyes

The book is part 3 of the "Young Bond" series. Also, if we're looking for sporting achievements, maybe we could narrow down possibilities by looking at achievements Eton has made. The book has Bond going to school there. Just throwing it out there.

Oh no, I had a terrible feeling it would be related to cryptic crossword puzzles Laughing
I fail at those regularly Mr. Green

It woud be very interesting to find out what the cryptic clues were for the crossword in the book

EDIT: Totally irrelevant probably but there was competition for the book

Bah. I read over the wiki page on cryptic crosswords. And that sentence looks a whole heck of a lot like the examples given. I've been staring at it and transposing words, looking for anagrams, definition matches, hidden words for about two hours now and have nothing but a bruised ego.

I emailed John too, but no response.

And complete randomness: I wonder why he is usually so secretive about his family.

I've just read three guides to understanding cryptic crosswords and I am as lost as ever. people actually do these things? This is my first encounter with these wretched things. I hate them. Cursing

But to be fair, don't they need to provide us with a number of letters in the word(s) we're supposed to be looking for? otherwise we might as well just be groping around in the dark.

On a completely different note...i read on some unofficial young-bond fan page that the 3rd book also features the game of hearts.

Unfortunately there is no actual cryptic crossword, but if you look at the very first post in this thread there's a bit of code which jwiv translated. It had a clue/riddle in it that sounded similar to a cryptic crossword clue.

As for this Young Bond 3 Letter, i'm confused, is this your decoding of the letter from the Young Bond 3 contest that ran with the release of the book?

O.o -lost- What was that from?

There's no actual cryptic crossword yet, just this code which jwiv got.
Quote:
54687265652D706172742073706F7274696E6720616368656976656D656E7420736D6F74686572656420696E20697400

Which became:
Quote:
Three-part sporting acheivement smothered in it

We thought it was probably a cc because the only other "clue" that he gave was:
Quote:
My son was reading a book before he got kidnapped..the riddle reminds me of something inside it. Incase it helps, the book is by Charlie Higson, name is "Double Or Die"

In which one of the puzzles was a cc.

SO! Comeon! I know I'm a moron, but some of you smart guys should be able to see something I'm missing! XD

Edit: Oop Hy's too quick for me.

EDIT2: I would also just like to note that "acheivement" is spelled wrong, (achievement) and was so straight out of the hex code.
