Player Etiquette (a bit of a Rant)

If by some change you gain access to a game Character's e-mail/blog/etc. ID and passwords, please do not send out e-mail/webpage updates/etc. as if you were the in game character.

It creates headaches for many people:

1. The Puppet Masters: they now need to do damage control on your false information. Which wastes their time and resources, leaving less time and resources for you the player.

2. Players: who now have to decide if every in game contact is real or a troll impersonating an in game character.

3. The ARG community: Because now PM's may feel the need in the future to not provide the same resourses for the next game, making it ever so much more difficult to create, and may discourage new PM's from trying because they do not want to deal with the problem.

I'll second that opinion (as she remembers a similar troll in CTW).

I'm a complete noob (I lurked around ILoveBees, but never participated) and the most confusing thing to me so far has been what I'm allow / expected to do as part of the game play. I've been watching the Lost Experience with minimal participation so far, but a couple of things have struck me as curious.

Firstly thehansofoundation.org contains a press release about how someone attempted to crack their database, but everything is ok because no confidential data was accessed. With no experience in this genre this sounds to me like an open invitation to attempt to crack their database. (Which a port scan has revealed that both of their DBs are directly connected to the internet. Which is highly unorthodox for a web page.) I understand I'm just being impatient, but the scenario seems too inviting to pass up. Assuming I could access the data, without changing anything to affect the game play of everyone else, would it still be unethical, would that be considered behind the curtain?

Secondly a small ethical debate broke out a few days ago when someone tried to socially engineer their way into a fictional characters Monster.com account to gain access to their resume. I understand why that is over the line, although I have to admit, it crossed my mind to try it earlier. But I believe my boss has an employer account on Monster, and is also a fan of the show it's based on, so I could feasibly gain access to this resume legally. Again, would this be considered behind the curtain?

The hacking attempts are being discussed over in the Meta section here.

Concerning the Monster.com resume... ask yourself "why?"
Why would a character have a Resume someplace that players couldn't get to unless they had a corporate account to Monster. Either you will get access to the Hanso foundation's monster account, or you wont. If you don't then, if it really becomes necessary, the PM's will find a way to make it available.
