I'm with you on this, Fictional. - one of the biggest points made by all these oil crash websites is that oil is our main source of power - no oil = no power. I see big chunks of the internet going down as servers are bricked, and they say that J. random isn't going to have light, let alone internet access.

Will the internet go down if no oil? I assume so, I guess we will have to see how it is explained in the game. It turns out that nuclear power is the greatest source of energy used by NYC - or it was in 2005. Still, that didn't help in the blackout.

I found this quote which I liked from a 2005 post:

Quote:
Let me simply state that I am not one of those "head for the hills" type of people who thinks they can completely insulate themselves from the impact of peak oil by founding an eco-village or some type of intended living communities. Rather, I see the answer to peak oil not in each person becoming more independent from society, but rather from forming more local/regional levels of interdependency and self-sufficiency - local energy generation, local food production, local manufacturing bases, communities that are relatively self sufficient for the basics of life.

HammerSickle08: Greetings
gracesmominnh: Hi! Do I know you?
HammerSickle08: I don't think we met, but I have been aquainted with Evie (mPathytest) and would like to chat, if that's alright.
gracesmominnh: Oh! sure!
HammerSickle08: First, I'll introduce myself. I am Cordrey, a concerned Highschool Junior who heard about the 8TSOC via internet.
gracesmominnh: Hi Cordrey
gracesmominnh: my name is Sharon, but everyonhe calls me gracesmom anyways Smile
HammerSickle08: Is Grace your daughter?
gracesmominnh: yes
HammerSickle08: Oh? Is she(?) involved in the upcoming oil situation?
gracesmominnh: well, kinda Smile she;s only 4 so I am tryinhg not to frighten her too much w/it
gracesmominnh: but we talk about how we dont go in the car unless we have to, and to turn off lights when we dont need them, small stuff
HammerSickle08: I'll bet that's helpful. How do you feel about the oil crisis?
gracesmominnh: if its as bad as we think it will be...
gracesmominnh: I cant think too much about it, I just have to keep working w/Gala and Yucky and everyone
gracesmominnh: keeping busy helps
HammerSickle08: What are you guys doing?
gracesmominnh: we are trying to spread the word thru the webpage and make sure people know whats coming and try to help them prepare and share their stories
HammerSickle08: Do you trust mPathytest / Dessum?
gracesmominnh: well thats a funny question
gracesmominnh: do you not?
HammerSickle08: I don't know, I could show you some things that she's said to me.
gracesmominnh: I think they are a little weird but they seem like they want to help
gracesmominnh: what things?
HammerSickle08: mPathytest: Gala_Teah told me to stop blabbing to random people on the Interent, to take it slow, make sure we can't be accused of Panic Mongering

mPathytest: (well I think he doesn't want us to make people panic because secretly he doesn't want us to be ready! but don't tell Gala and the gang I said that)
HammerSickle08: mPathytest (7:34:09 PM): no, it's cool -- Emil is distracting me with some flirty IMs but you're right, not one of the original
8mPathytest (7:34:23 PM): let's just say me and dessum are like elite
unitsmPathytest (7:34:39 PM): dessum has skills, i have crazy ideas
HammerSickle08 (7:34:21 PM): Could you elaborate?
mPathytest (7:36:00 PM): hmmmm well do you know anything about biomimicry?
gracesmominnh: ok thats weird--for one gala is a she and I think Evie knows that--Gala is Inky's mom
gracesmominnh: maybe they have only talked online, I dunno
HammerSickle08: Do you know what was meant by the second part, about them being elite?
gracesmominnh: haha
gracesmominnh: I have no idea
gracesmominnh: it sounds funny though
gracesmominnh: maybe they feel like they have to prove themselves because they werent w/us in Denver
HammerSickle08: I see. I thought it sounded interesting too, so I figured I'd bring it up.
HammerSickle08: Is there any way for somebody like myself to join the group?
gracesmominnh: you can join the WWO community on livejournal
gracesmominnh: also we will have the website up soon and you can add your story there
HammerSickle08: With everything that is happening, what if internet access isn't available?
gracesmominnh: you believe us, right? you know theres some kind of crisis coming?
HammerSickle08: Yes, I have seen articles from mPathyTest. It's a scary thought.
gracesmominnh: Yucky says he has "plans" to keep the web stuff up
gracesmominnh: I dont know what the impact will be on internet stuff, thats a good question
gracesmominnh: I will ask Yucky for more, hes better at the tech stuff than I am
HammerSickle08: Thanks - is there any way for us concerned citizens to contact the rest of the group?
gracesmominnh: I think everyone is on livejournal and AIM
gracesmominnh: is there anyone in particular you were looking for?
HammerSickle08: Gala would be nice to talk to, I understand that she is a pretty important person as far as the crisis goes, maybe Yucky etc. Dessum, also. Basically anybody.
HammerSickle08: It helps to talk to somebody, knowing that SOMETHING is being done to help a little. It's really scary.
gracesmominnh: gala is on AIM as galateah.w
gracesmominnh: yucky is always on livejournal
HammerSickle08: Thank you, that is very helpful and comforting. How do you think things will play out after the crisis?
gracesmominnh: I dont have contact info for dessum, but gala or yucky will know where to find him--hes also on LJ a lot
HammerSickle08: What could you tell me about Nico?
gracesmominnh: we need to work together--its the only way I think we can make it
gracesmominnh: gotta go, Grace needs me
HammerSickle08: Thank you for your help!

My biggest question is, though, what is the relevance of blogging communities after the oil shock happens. I mean, wouldn't you think people would be spending less time blogging and more time trying to survive? Confused

Well, it'd be dramatically more difficult to get to see friends and family, if you're widely spread across the country. I guess its a good way to find out what everyone's up to, and make sure that everyone's okay.

Also, there's a document produced by the British government's Foresight programme here (large file, opens pdf), and the Tribal Trading Scenario seems pretty relevant.

I've read pretty much the whole thread and haven't seen the word "horse" used once. What's that about? I live in the middle of nowhere and have to get a ride or walk a mile to the bus stop to get to an actual city. If not being able to use fuel our cars hits anyone hard, you'd think it would be me, but you can't really drive in any direction from our house without passing at least one horse owned by a neighbor. If there's civilization to reach, lots of us out here could probably reach it without gas.

Edit: just saw the introduction thread, so I took out my info from this post.

Nice job, Ancheta!

Also... This is kind of upsetting, just because it means that the AIM names we were given from the 'chat' might not all be correct. Hum... I guess that means that these are correct for sure:

mPathyTest (confirmed by contact)
galateahw (confirmed via gracesmominnh [note that there is no period])
gracesmominnh (confirmed by contact)
IllianaSpeedster (confirmed by contact)

These have been proved OOG for sure:

localboy (proved OOG by contact)

---

Looks like it's time to fix this in the wiki, then.

Xuratu in Blue: I'm big on conservation, so I've been reading up a lot about the oil situation. I think it's great that you guys are preparing but -- a stranger in a crowded airport? Why even humor the thought he could be serious? It seems pretty absurd. Do you have any evidence for the kind of disaster you guys are predicting?
galateahw: I did get some follow-up, validating in its own nasty way. There's no doubt in my mind that the guy believes it's coming. And it's not an oil crash, or at least I don't think so. I'm expecting an oil shock. That's how I read the signs.
Xuratu In Blue: How did you guys meet this guy, if you don't mind me asking?
galateahw: Denver airport. We were all stranded there in the blizzard.
Xuratu In Blue: Right, I heard about that. So, if I buy into the oil shock, where would you suggest to start preparing? It feels like everything around me utilizes oil resources.
Xuratu In Blue: I don't think anyone knows where to start here.
galateahw: yeah, there is that. mostly, you need to see the things that oil does for you that nothing else can do.
Xuratu In Blue: I think I'm going to start keeping a journal in the next few weeks. It's a frightening and thrilling time.
galateahw: See, I really encourage that. We are going to have millions of people all doing
galateahw: research, if we can pool it we'll learn more quickly
Xuratu In Blue: That sounds like a really good idea. Is the LiveJournal group going to open up again? I think it's a good resource for pooling that kind of information.
galateahw: I can't answer that for sure. It's in transition
galateahw: We are like herding cats most of the time
galateahw: but in a good way.
Xuratu In Blue: Of course.
Xuratu In Blue: Fair enough. Let's keep in touch, you're right about sticking together with information.
galateahw: Yes, we can do that. I have fires to put out today
Xuratu In Blue: Oh?
galateahw: so i need to go, but thanks for writing
Xuratu In Blue: Sure thing.
Xuratu In Blue: Talk to you soon.
galateahw: ttyl

Not a lot, but it looks like the LJ community is locked down for the forseeable. Maybe that'll change come the 30th.[/quote]

Just had an AIM chat with Gala_Teah.

Quote:
galateahw: I have only a moment - what's yr ?
GSAs I Dont Know: i wanted to know about localboy
GSAs I Dont Know: how can we contact him?
GSAs I Dont Know: havent seen him online at all...
GSAs I Dont Know: what if he doesnt think april 30th is happening?
galateahw: no, he's not online much. he's old school
galateahw: he knows it's coming, believe me.

GSAs I Dont Know: ah, i see. thats a relief then--hes not hurt or anything.
GSAs I Dont Know: one more quick question, if you have a sec...
galateahw: not that I know of. He's pretty secretive.
GSAs I Dont Know: are you mad at mpathy?
galateahw: why do you ask?
GSAs I Dont Know: well... you seemed pretty upset after the incident with your blog, and he always kinda insinuates that you two don't get along well.
GSAs I Dont Know: sorry if its something personal...
GSAs I Dont Know: i dont mean to be digging into it unless it directly affects WWO.
galateahw: Well, she is pretty much a loose cannon.
galateahw: But WWO will survive her I am sure.

GSAs I Dont Know: Smile She's very excited about getting people involved and prepared.
galateahw: She is that. But will finding your inner SF author prepare you for the shock?
galateahw: I dunno.

GSAs I Dont Know: Hm, true. Your inner SF author will not buy you canned goods.
GSAs I Dont Know: Do you think that its best to get the word out about April 30th or keep it a secret (to avoid mass hysteria)?
galateahw: But I am not mad at her any more. I don't hold on to stuff like that.
GSAs I Dont Know: Okay, well that's good.
galateahw: Get the word out. Most people don't believe - are in denial
galateahw: there will be no hysteria, believe me.

GSAs I Dont Know: ...The hysteria will be after it happens...
GSAs I Dont Know: I think that you're right... I've tried telling my friends and family... And most of them don't take me seriously. They think we have a few dozen years to solve the problem... But we only have 9 more days...
galateahw: right. Gotta go - sorry but I have a call.
GSAs I Dont Know: Okay.
GSAs I Dont Know: Well, it was nice talking to you. Smile
galateahw: yes- same here -bye
GSAs I Dont Know: Bye.

IM Conversation With Galateahw

Quote:
MMOMordy: Hey, we're LJ buddies. Hope you don't mind me getting your SN and saying hello.
galateahw: No, not at all. But what's on your mind?
galateahw: I have a moment while some files are uploading.
MMOMordy: Just wanted to drop a line and say hello. I'm probbaly geographically closer to Sharon, but it's a good idea for everyone to stay in touch.
galateahw: Sharon?
MMOMordy: In case things happen, I have the feeling community is going to make a big difference.
galateahw: I agree with you about community.
galateahw: very important
MMOMordy: I'm sorry, gracesmom, right?
galateahw: Right, just checking.
galateahw: We look out for each other.
galateahw: Mostly.
MMOMordy: Oh. Good point. I have no idea how many people are following this now.
MMOMordy: Mostly. Sounds ominous.
galateahw: No, nothing like that!
galateahw: Kind of slipped out.
galateahw: File at 26%. What about the community where you live?
MMOMordy: Oh! Well, I live in NYC. Probably the scariest place to be at the moment.
MMOMordy: The proverbial tinderbox.
MMOMordy: How about you?
galateahw: I dunno. I think LA or Atlanta, way worse.
MMOMordy: Or Baltimore. Just the idea makes me shiver.
galateahw: New Yorkers also, when things go down, they hang together.
galateahw: Baltimore? Is that bad?
galateahw: Never been there.
MMOMordy: True. I was here the last time something happened... we're only mean on the outside.
MMOMordy: Well, I watch The Wire on HBO.
MMOMordy: It looks scary. And my friends from Baltimore confirm that.
MMOMordy: So what kind of file stuff are you doing? Work?
galateahw: Oh, right. That's TV though. Not reality.
galateahw: No, for WWO. Video files.
galateahw: 36%
MMOMordy: Oh? You're uploading them?
galateahw: Transferring.
MMOMordy: What kind of files are they?
MMOMordy: Let me know if I'm being a nudge. Just curious.
galateahw: You are being a nudge.
MMOMordy: Ha. Ok. I'll drop it.
galateahw: (AVI)
galateahw: The thing is, how deep do communities go?
galateahw: I have a pretty involved community where I live
galateahw: but that's having to do with rather mundane stuff.
MMOMordy: Or how do you define communities? I'm married - so I have family. Then there's my specific community in Washington Heights. And then there's this community that's growing around the April 30th concern.
MMOMordy: And then there's some overlap.galateahw: See, another good question. The thing that scares me is
galateahw: some communities depend on oil.
MMOMordy: Like online communities?
galateahw: You mean like power outages?
MMOMordy: Yes.
galateahw: I don't see that happening.
MMOMordy: And I know in NY I'm walking distance across the island - but cars are gonna stop.
MMOMordy: (Btw, have you read this? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/21/business/worldbusiness/21oil.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss)
galateahw: Lemme look.
MMOMordy: It's a bitter cycle.
MMOMordy: Politics and oil.
galateahw: No, I didn't see that. Thanks for bringing it up.
galateahw: Pretty much expected it, though.
MMOMordy: It's certainly concerning.
galateahw: Politics is all about who gets what. Oil is all about the same thing.
galateahw: They are two sides of the same piece of silver.
MMOMordy: From the little I know, I have to agree.
MMOMordy: So have many people online been in touch with 8tsoc?
galateahw: I'm not sure how many. I have Inky keep track of the LJ community, mostlygalateahw: and I haven't gotten an update recently from her.galateahw: Our orbits are colliding these days.
MMOMordy: I don't really know inky. I've only been in contact with Sharon and yucky, really.
MMOMordy: I actually think I found your LJ first and posted. And you told me to get in contact with gracesmom.
MMOMordy: Both of us being in the Northeast.
MMOMordy: So, how are the files coming along? Almost uploaded?
galateahw: 79%.
galateahw: Yeah, we don't have anyone in New York
MMOMordy: Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open here.
galateahw: Gracesmom, but she hardly ever gets down there.
galateahw: It's a haul for her.
MMOMordy: Understandably. NH is far away.
MMOMordy: If you run into anyone else from NYC, send them my way. My LJ is wwo_mordy.livejournal.com
MMOMordy: It'd be good to make contacts in the immediate area. Just in case.
galateahw: OK. Good idea.
MMOMordy: Good luck with the files. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
galateahw: Thanks, see ya!
MMOMordy: Ciao!

You download the client and sign up for an account at http://www.aim.com/

There are other clients you can use besides just theirs, especially if you want to use multiple IMs and not just AIM. But that will get you started.

Had another chat with Gala. She initiated it this time.

Quote:
galateahw: You still there, GSA?
GSAs I Dont Know: Yep!
GSAs I Dont Know: What's up?
galateahw: I was wondering about your experience warning your friends...
GSAs I Dont Know: ah, yes
galateahw: I mean, why exactly do people belieive the oil is endless?
GSAs I Dont Know: well... i printed out some of the articles that mPathy has been giving out
GSAs I Dont Know: and id show them to them... and theyd be like
GSAs I Dont Know: "well, it wont happen in my generation." or "well they'll find a fix before we run out" or something like that
GSAs I Dont Know: "ill be dead before its a problem"

galateahw: or shortly thereafter.
GSAs I Dont Know: exactly
GSAs I Dont Know: and everybody seems to think that everybody else is finding the solution so they don't have to contribute.
GSAs I Dont Know: so as it ends up nobody's doing much of anything.
galateahw: Mostly i sense that people look around and don't see anyone else panicking
galateahw: so they don't.

GSAs I Dont Know: Exactly. The media's not flipping out over it, so why should they?
galateahw: Media. Don't get me started.
GSAs I Dont Know: Still... I see things about it all the time. Nothing that gets people excited, but...
GSAs I Dont Know: Heh, you're not a big fan of the media?
galateahw: Not exactly.
GSAs I Dont Know: Ah.
galateahw: I like my reality a little less televised.
galateahw: You know, I see things about oil all the time also. NOW I do.
galateahw: Before, not so much.

GSAs I Dont Know: Same here.
galateahw: It's like little alarms going off all over the neighborhood
GSAs I Dont Know: I mean... Normally I used to flip right over stuff dealing with oil and whatnot in magazines and stuff...
galateahw: but slowly, slowly, so you don't think to run.
GSAs I Dont Know: thats chilling.
GSAs I Dont Know: like how the frog will jump out of the pot if the water gets hot too quickly, but if the water slowly warms up then pretty soon they're boiling and they didn't even think to get out.
galateahw: Just what I was thinking.
GSAs I Dont Know: When I talked to mpathy a while ago about the media...
GSAs I Dont Know: I said something like, "we need to get the big media covering this." And she said, "well, we can do a better job than they can. we will be the big media."

galateahw: She's right about that.
galateahw: I don't think they will have a clue which way to look.

GSAs I Dont Know: Of course not.
galateahw: So they will look at their navels, as usual.
GSAs I Dont Know: XD
GSAs I Dont Know: Too bad Nico wasn't a journalist.
GSAs I Dont Know: He certainly seems to know exactly what's going on.
galateahw: He might be a journalist. I don't know
galateahw: but he does seem to float around a lot.

GSAs I Dont Know: Have you seen him since that time at the Denver Airport?
galateahw: Oh no. And actually I take that back. No way is he a journalist.
GSAs I Dont Know: Why not?
galateahw: He just wasn't the type.
GSAs I Dont Know: Ah.
GSAs I Dont Know: What was he like?
galateahw: The journalists I know are interested in things outside themselves.
galateahw: Him, not so much.

GSAs I Dont Know: So he was pretty egotistical?
GSAs I Dont Know: I wonder why he told you about April 30th... It's almost... Prophetic. I dunno.
galateahw: No, not that. But he seemed upset
galateahw: that life had somehow intruded on his plans in Denver.
