Ok, so according to wiki
Quote:
In a typical clue, the answer is described in two ways, either of which can come first. One part of the clue is a definition, which must exactly match the part of speech and tense of the answer. The second half (the subsidiary indication) describes the answer in terms of wordplay. (The subsidiary indication can be a second definition in the case of double definition clues.) One of the tasks of the solver is to work out where this boundary occurs and insert a mental pause there when reading the clue cryptically. (Sometimes the two parts are joined with a link word or phrase such as "from" or "could be".)
So basically, we could be looking for another meaning for 'smothered in it' for example.
I think its at this point I mention again - I hate cryptic crosswords xD
So smothered in it - for example - covered, supressed, coated, contained, restrained?! gah I feel a migraine comming on.

sporting could be read two ways:
the regular, pertaining to sports: the sporting event was quite nice today.
Secondary verbular (is that a word?) reading, meaning to wear or display: Here comes Ms. Clinton, sporting a lovely new pantsuit.

God that wiki lists how many different possibilites as to what form of cryptic this could be.
Reversals, anagrams, pure cryptic, double definition, hidden words
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptic_crossword
Oh and it also mentions that sometimes slang words are used, which if thats the case, could be difficult for people to crack if its an English game. We tend to have slang for every word in the dictionary Obscure ones like 'bobbins' which means rubbish could be here for a while if thats the case!

Or also the qualities of sportsmanship, like "fair": To give a sporting chance.

Ive just had a thought. Its been bugging me that weve not got anything that would help us with the answer.
For instance most clues would have how many letters are needed.
What if we have read it wrong? What if its:
Three-part, sporting acheivement smothered in it.
Three part refering to how many words, the length etc of the answer. 'Its a 3 parter'

Maybe a compound word ? Ex: counterclockwise, technically it's one word but can be broken into counter-clock-wise

Man, that sounds really possible to. I think that's the trouble with this, considering the nature of the puzzle everything sounds really possible.
I emailed the father again, telling him that we thought the string sounded like a cryptic crossword, but no reply to that one either. Has anyone actually had any contact with him since that last James Bond clue? (Hope this didn't poof before it even started.)

Just a bit of spec but could we be looking for a web address? All I'm thinking is if this clue, when solved, just gives us a word, there's not much to go on.
When viewing sports results the win, loss and draw are usually represented by W, L and D. "Three-part sporting achievement" could refer to www as in the beginning of an address. Only problem is that leaves us with "covered in it" for the rest of the address.
Unless the format is www.(word for covered in).it
I don't know, just throwing this out there for someone to expand on but I'm definitely interested and all work today is on hold til I've figured this out.

Okay so, sorry for the double post, but this seemed important enough.
.it is the Italian domain designation. Maybe "smothered in it" means "smothered" in Italian? soffocato? I cant find any web addresses for that though.

definitions of smother FWIW:
To suffocate.
To deprive (a fire) of the oxygen necessary for combustion.
To conceal, suppress, or hide
To cover thickly
To lavish a surfeit of a given emotion on (someone):
There's also a lot of synonyms, so I think without another clue we're struggling.
The other possibility is that while www is tempting it could be wrong. If this is a cryptic clue it usually leads to one word or phrase that once you've got it makes sense (sometimes).
