Believing
paranoia from Worldwithoutoil

So on WWO, I was reading (player) Ancalime's lj post about the internet's dependence on oil-powered electricity, and my first thought was warn the ISPs! But then it occurred to me, if I did that, as myself, then that means I'm really starting to believe this stuff (oil crash). I guess it's the support by articles, and that all the fiction is very local and not causal to the crisis. I mean, this looks like evidence to me, not hard evidence, but enough to get me paranoid, to get a thoughtless person completely accepting. Makes me wonder about this technique in general (think about the history-manipulating political cult leader LaRouche). Who was it at the conference that pondered "when will ARGs be used for evil?"
There's a fine line being walked...

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say evil, Smile but depending on your point of view, there are already ARGs out there that one might classify as political propaganda. Year Zero has a pretty strong political viewpoint, and there's an ARG/treasure hunt out there called the Jamestown 400 with a pretty strident evangelical Christian/political conservative bent.

I think this is when the ethics that may have looked before like a formality (ensuring that there are metacommunications that make it clear that it's a game, etc.) begin to develop teeth.

novice question

As I'm about to start playing (mostly watching I fear), I can't help but wonder how an ARG could be used for evil? Do you mean to deliver a "dark" message? Scaredy cat that I am, wouldn't you know it, I'm most attracted to the darker games like The Wyoming Incident, The Human Pet and Bristel Goodman. Recommendations and assurances anyone?
