I'm not sure why you would discard all the circled words in the other lit? It seems unlikely that they would try to confuse the issue by circling all kinds of words in different lit sources, and then expect that we would know the puzzle actually only lay in the 2 lit sources doesn't it? "Red" herrings I get, but that seems a little above and beyond to me.... jmo.

Is there a copy of Call of Cthulhu that I can view online besides the partial at Amazon? I thought I found one a while ago, but I can't remember where.

Amazon does have a book you can search, but you have to be a registered, active user, in order to search every page.

working with the letters, IF "WASNONO..." should actually be "WASONNO...", it's possible that NO could lead to NOVEMBER, which fits with the known letters.

notgordian jokingly said in chat maybe WAS NO NOVEMBER FOOL...

yet, googling "November fool's day" (November 2) links to this page, which lists a UFO event in 1957, linking to a wikipedia article about blue lights being seen in Texas.

Now, if it does actually spell "Was on November fool's day", then what would we do with the answer? make a url out of it? Punch it in somewhere? or might it just be a spooky, interesting connection?...

Seems like a suspicious coincidence...

I think this event is more relevent to Sentry Outpost folks:

Quote:

Unlawful Conduct, Prevent Its Recurrence, And Restore Competition

Or this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_worm
Quote:
The Morris worm or Internet worm was one of the first computer worms distributed via the Internet; it is considered the first worm and was certainly the first to gain significant mainstream media attention. It was written by a student at Cornell University, Robert Tappan Morris, and launched on November 2, 1988 from MIT. The worm was released from MIT to disguise the fact that the worm originally came from Cornell. (Incidentally, Robert Tappan Morris is now an associate professor at MIT.)

hard to narrow down a date for it though. There are few google results for it, only a couple of possible dates referenced, and nothing explicitly saying "X is November Fool's Day"...
Confused

could be just coincidental spec

This looks most promising.
Has anybody run this trick with the other "redwords"? (i.e. 2600, MotS, etc.)

This Atlanta Craigs Listing, added on 4-27, uses many of the red circled words, along with "circles" mentioned four times. Maybe there's a hint in there.

You: Running in circles

Me: Moving on

We make our way through the hostile forest, neither of us knowing what creatures lurk in the shadows. The wind howls its psychic warnings through the trees. The curiosity of what awaits on the other side drives us forward.

The trees begin to give way to a meadow. We dance through the red clover, the catnip, the dogbane. You run ahead, jumping in the air, chasing the butterflies. I hear the splash when you hit the water. A lake. It's then that I notice the silence and the fresh air.

Standing at the edge, I look down and marvel at the reflection looking back it me. I don't recognize the face, though I know it's my own. It spooks me to think that this is how I look in this bizarre supernatural world. You splash me, twisting the reflection into ghostly shapes.

The cool water feels good against my skin. I take off my shoes and wade in the water. Digging my toes into the muddy ground and skimming slime-coated pebbles across the water. Ripples spread and merge. Circles upon circles. Temporary sculptures on the still surface.

And then the realization hits. There is no hint of danger. No fear. No madness. It's ordinary. It's too ordinary. You want to stay. I can't stop you, but it's time to move on. It's time to explore.

I make my way towards the hills on the other side of the lake. There's a small cave hidden behind the rocks. Lonely, I call for you to follow - a gesture done in vain. You're too busy chasing your own tail, running in circles... enjoying the peace. I enter the cave. I hear the scream.

I'll bseeingu
BA

(Bold and text color changes are mine.)
There is also "lurk" on this CL; we have "lurking" circled on one of the pages.
And the title on this CL, "enjoying the peace" brings to mind the "Peace" I Ching used on some of the pages.

As I type this in the wee hours of the morning, I'm not sure if I've spotted all the red words correctly. If I've missed any, let me know, and I'll edit this post.

eta: Here's the link to the wiki http://bsuwiki.arghive.com/Package_Contents
edit2: Made "ordinary" red. The only other words that we have from Mountains of Madness that weren't used are "old one" and "mystery".
edit3: Another observation, both "curious" and "curiosity" are circled words, only "curiosity" appears in the above CL.

Hm... that really looks like a good possibility... I'll look into it when I'm not about to fall asleep in my chair.

Wow, drzjr, excellent catch. I'm afraid I've started ignoring the CL postings, thinking that they're just a way of acknowledging players/drawing people in. That's obviously a mistake.

I looked up the three herbs mentioned, and found this site:

http://www.bewitchingways.com/charts/herbs/herb_use.htm

which lists them all under the "love" category. (Most have multiple uses). I don't know if that is significant--all three are also well-known to attract butterflies, and the very next phrase talks about butterflies, so that could be all it's there for.

Quite a buggy game. Lots of references to bug-squashing so far, both of the electronic and chitinous varieties.

Red clover, catnip and dogbane are also butterfly attractants (mentioned in the post)...

Nice drizjr! It looks to me like this could be a comment on our inability to move forward on this puzzle from the PMs, no?

Yep, I was wondering the same thing. Or is it a nudge to leave this alone for now?

Funny how this Craigslist posting ends with the subject entering a cave and hearing a scream. HPHack's dream started with him being in a cave where he encounters a glowing woman who sends out a piercing scream.

Quote:

I dream of caves too much. I never see their heavy roof or course walls in the dark. I have never been here. These dreams are never pleasant ones. Usually, I feel a cold knife at my throat, a suffocating claustrophobia that overwhelms me but keeps me from waking, a crowd surging in dark, tight places. This time I am alone except for the blanket of blackness and gentle rustles, but I could still know by the knot in my gut that I would never behold the blessed light of day again. I hear her voice first. She whispers, "Fal mahdee wal hkaderr wal mustakbal yazubuuna kullahom fee hyo zotho". Everything falls deathly silent.

And then she is standing right in front of me in glowing rainment. She looks like no saint I have ever seen. Her eyes look right through me. "She would have killed you too," she says, with a compassion that makes me begin to weep. She smiles, and opens her lips as if to speak again. And a strangled scream is all that emerges from her mouth as her face rends into something unspeakable.
