perhaps someone can generate a quick script that will filter through all the cities on craigslist for new updates?

So the other feeds I set up didn't work so well.

This one should be current to within about 10 minutes:
All entries
RSS Feed
Archive
Note: these will be missing any feeds that expired before today, but shouldn't loose anything currently in there.

Hopefully this isn't too late and more craigslist posts will be made Shocked

But there are still too many gaps to be sure that they are supposed to fit together at all..

I'm not sure about the first round, the ones with the trailhead that we have matched with packages sent out to people. I think they may be more of an introduction.

I wasn't sure myself at first, but after reading them and moving them around, I am convinced that they tell a story. Even with what we have so far we have a good idea what the basic outline of the story might be:

Dreams keeping her awake, she goes through the city, there is a horror of some kind that is killing people, making others flee. This horror changes people so there becomes two kinds of people, one group who is in danger of harm from the others. She is in almost constant peril.

She sees the same people over and over again in this dream world and she gets to know them. Something happens and she decides to try to find others to tell them her story.

Other than that - I think we can tell this is a gory, bloody and scary story. Probably with Monsters. Wink

I think that the use of "you" in this story is confusing. I think that the you may change from scene to scene.

But, of course, I always try to make a story out of fragments, that is basically what playing an ARG is to me, so I could be wrong. I know for sure that my order isn't the final one, but I wanted to start somewhere. Time will tell!

One more thing: I love this use of Craigslist. Well done PMs.

I like your analysis rose! Given that these are dream fragments, it makes sense that they won't all go together smoothly. But I agree that they must be variants on similar dreams.

For example:

April 25, Indianapolis
Quote:
I make my way up the street, greeting my neighbors as I pass. We each have our place. The man standing on the corner, the dog growling behind the fence, the old woman picking through the trash.

The girl is new.

Sitting on the library steps, her nose in a book. We all have our ways of escaping madness. This must be hers. I watch for a few minutes. She blinks and turns the page.

The boys on their skateboards race down the street. I pull the old woman out of the way. I do this every night.

I hear a scream.
I turn my head.

The girl is gone.

April 28, Orlando
Quote:
Night after night, I find myself here in this city of madness. The faces are familiar to me now - the man standing on the corner, the dog growling behind the fence, the old woman sorting through her belongings.

I wander over to the bench where she's sitting. She smiles and invites me to sit. I watch as she carefully picks up her precious heirlooms - an old note, a well-worn book, a faded photograph.

A photograph of me.

For the first time all day, I'm awake.

EDIT: to add another thought:

So we've already seen the 'subtle' hints in the April 27, Atlanta that we are running in circles with the red word puzzle:
Quote:
And then the realization hits. There is no hint of danger. No fear. No madness. It's ordinary. It's too ordinary. You want to stay. I can't stop you, but it's time to move on. It's time to explore.

I make my way towards the hills on the other side of the lake. There's a small cave hidden behind the rocks. Lonely, I call for you to follow - a gesture done in vain. You're too busy chasing your own tail, running in circles... enjoying the peace. I enter the cave. I hear the scream.

Now consider this, from April 28, Philadelphia:
Quote:
It's amazing what people will share in those quiet times. The secrets they tell. Talking it out helps. It puts the burden on someone else and lets you move on.

Another hint to share information with the Sentries?

Yes I absolutely think we should share everything with them, at least at the beginning here. BA sent us to them for a reason; she sent them to us, in a sense to, by sending them packages and posting in Craigslist. She wants us to collaborate.

Maybe down the line we can distinguish the Sentries more by personality or something and make another decision, but right now it seems like we aren't going to get anywhere unless we trust them.

A couple of things about the craigslist posts:

The first two days of posting (13 & 17 April) seem to be just introductions to people. The second two (21 & 28 April) seem to be telling a story in parts.

I've been looking at them a bit, and trying to put them in order. As far as the order goes, I'm thinking it's one of two things:

1. Once we figure out the order, it will be important in some way (e.g. the first letters of the titles spell something), or

2. Something else tells us the order in which to place them (e.g. the red words in the posting drzjr pointed out, or the Me: of one post links to the You: of another, as some look like they might

You: Looking to the future
Me: Looking at the past
You: Running past
Me: Sitting back

You: The crone
Me: A friendly face
You: A familiar face
Me: A stranger in a frame
wow what a big parenthetical aside)

It seems that there are four parts, and I'm not precisely sure in which order to place them.

1. A building - coming to and going from
2. Walking through the city
3. Finding yourself in graveyard and then going down a cave
4. Starting to leave the city and then not.

However, a couple of the postings indicate another possibility to me: that each posting is like a page in one of those "create your own adventure" books. The reason I mention this is that there are posts that mention waking up and taking a different set of actions:

Buenos Aires, 04/25
Quote:
The piercing screams break through the window shattering the hopes of any sleep that I was going to get. I turn on the coffee maker and head outside to grab the paper. The fresh air fills my lungs, cooling my nerves and reminding me that this is only a dream.

New Orleans, 04/28
Quote:
I turn on the coffee maker and head to the computer. I want to get it all down and to find the others. The light from the screen swims inside my eyes. I reach for the aspirin and I type.

Miami 04/25
Quote:
Piercing screams broke through the window shattering the hopes of any sleep that I was going to get. I looked outside but couldn't see anything through the smoke. It wasn't safe, I knew that. I had to get out. Running down the hall, I passed the stairs. crowded. Too many people. Too much panic.

Now, the first two made me think that she was waking in the dream, and then waking from the dream, but the third makes me think it just might be the alternate choice in one of those novels.

Then, I ran into the two posts about a coffee shop--it sounds like another one of those story choices. Do you enter the coffee shop? If yes, turn to page 12. If no, turn to page 157.

Seattle, 04/25
Quote:
On the other side of the road, I spotted a diner. Amidst all this madness and all this pain, people are taking the time to be human and to do the things they always do. A cup of coffee, a piece of pie, conversations about the weather... it's a bit overcast, but the sun might peak through the smoke later today. Have they lost their minds or have I lost mine? I made my way over, hoping that the mundane will seep into my bones. There are tables outside, most are empty. I sat down for a moment. Just a moment. Closing my eyes, I tried to get away. I heard your voice as you ran past. By the time I realized and got up, you were gone. I followed, but you weren't there.

San Diego 04/27
Quote:
The erratic flickering of the neon sign caught my attention.

Now Serving.

The building was nondescript. A diner? A bar? It didn't matter, my throat was dry and I was anxious to get the acrid taste of smoke out of my mouth. When I walked in, the place was packed. I walked up to the bar and sat down on the only unoccupied stool, next to you.

Sorry for the massive post!

Nodding my head, yep yep. The first sets of messages definitely seem to be directed to specific players, but the more recent sets seem to be more about the narrative of the dreams themselves. So, I've been trying to work on this too. Some possibilities I've played around with to figure out how to connect the narratives:

1) the content of the messages (the most obvious one)
2) whether they are directed w4w or w4m
3) whether they are written in present or past tense
4) whether they contain specific keywords (e.g., madness, cave, city)

It's maddening!

Great idea. I want to look at this some more.

Other thoughts:
I was thinking that the posts might be "chapters" by date they are put up on Craigslist? Are these different dreams?

Also, I was thinking that the "you" is different -as I mentioned- so that what we are getting are different snapshots of the people she sees as she goes through her dream. Like she is walking through the dream, sees one person, the one she is sending the message to - sees what happens with them they become the "you" of that message - and then moves on, running into another person, who then becomes the "you" in the next bit.

She says she sees all these people and becomes familiar with them, who they are.

I want to find the one who has a picture of her. Wink

Attempt One to put the Craigslist posts together

Starting out with Rose's ordering, I put the other "story" craigslistings in a document, and then tried to put them in a rough order.

I don't think I've got it completely right, but I do think there are a lot of chunks that are right. Anyone else care to try to refine it? My eyes are starting to cross.

I saved it as rich text, hope everyone can read that.

Okay, puzzling about the question of the "you" some more, I think I found a concrete example of what you mean:

Consider Osaka (April 28 ):
Quote:
Osaka
Islands in the road - w4w
Date: 2007-04-28, 10:05PM JT

You: Ready to give up
Me: Fighting for you

The city rises up in the distance. People pouring out of it.

We fight our way through the street, going against the crowd. Everyone avoiding the corpses littering the way. Islands in the road covered with bird picking at the bones.

You look at me. Your eyes give you away. You're too weak to fight, too exhausted to go on. The only thing pushing you forward is knowing that, if you stop, we'll be stepping around you as the vultures circle around. The only question is if they'll wait until you're dead before fighting over your flesh.

I catch you as you collapse. I grab you by the waist and throw you over my shoulder. The birds circle my head. I run.

So notice that this is "w4w" -- in which case the "you" should be female.

Then there's Cedar Rapids (April 28 ):
Quote:
Cedar Rapids
Saying goodbye - w4m
Date: 2007-04-28, 6:42PM CDT

You: The caretaker
Me: Leaving things behind

You were there when I dropped her off. I didn't want to leave her, but there was no other way. We had our own roads ahead of us, things we had to do. Truth be told, she was the one that carried me. I could never have made it through it all without her. She believed in me and, while there was no reason to, it gave me the strength to go forward.

You told me that you'd watch over her. I hope you kept your promise.

So this one talks about dropping her off and that she was the one that carried the narrator (metaphorically). So I think that the "she" in Cedar Rapids is the same as the "you" in Osaka.

Yes that is what I mean. Even the "you" at the statue could be different from the "you" she finds in the cave. (for example)

Another question: are all of these archived somewhere? I went to get this one from the 21st from the wiki and it said expired listing:

Quote:
2007-04-21, 12:18AM PDT sfbay Standing at the base of the mountain - w4w

The links on the wiki seem to go directly to the craigslist - I suppose we have copies somewhere?

You can go directly to the wikipage where the posts are collected by date -- the complete messages are there.

Thanks for the link. I forgot we have (at least) two different wikis. Smile

Carmenmiranda - thanks for the text put together. I will look at that as well. Smile I do know what you mean about the eyes crossing from reading and trying to put this together. It isn't easy.
