[UPDATE] Violet Underground - 4th May 2007
Drips

Key-generated Transcript:

Right. I'm officially closing the file on the Missing Piece case. It's over. It's time to move on. And a particularly juicy mystery is-

No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I can't work like this. This is ridiculous. This supposedly luxury pad is dripping! Just look.

It's ridiculous! I know I'm not actually paying rent, but someone is! And they're not paying for these conditions! This has been going on for days now. I called the building supervisor, but he can't do anything because my name's not on the lease.

And it's not just the drips. The water pressure is low, and my morning shower has turned into a morning trickle! Gah!

Look, I know this is hardly the high-octane sleuthing you signed up for, but.. could you help me out with this? Kurt had found a plan of the building's plumbing. Can you please find out where these drips are coming from?

Oh, go on... please?

Key Transcript Ends

Oh, and there are a number of things related to the Hausam-era plumbing that you might find it helpful to know:

  • The building's main entrance is on West Caldera Street. It's got four floors and a basement. My flat is the one on the corner overlooking the Park, which means I get to look at joggers sweating their way around the trails in the morning, and feel grateful for another hour in bed.
  • There are people in the flats directly above and below mine, but none in the basement - just the caretaker's office in there. You know, the one who won't listen to me? Anyway, yes, two flats on the ground floor, and four on the other floors.
  • Flat #1 is the flat to your left when you're standing at the entrance on the ground floor, which makes Flat #2 the one on the right! On the floor above, Flat #3 is the flat on the left nearest to the entrance, and then they're numbered clockwise going from there.
  • The building has two sets of water pipes, all with fresh cold water. Kurt says it's to stop water pressure issues. My money is on incompetent plumbers.
  • Each flat receives its water from under the floor boards, so the leak can't be coming from my own water supply - according to the ceiling, the water is clearly coming from above me someplace. I wanted to use the other water supply to address my pressure issue (there's nothing like being itchy all day from shampoo you couldn't rinse out), but it apparently doesn't run through any of the walls or floor of my flat.
  • Kurt tells me the leak is coming from the flat that receives its water 12 flats before mine, based on some sort of necromancy he conducted involving water pressure. I guess we'll just have to trust him on this one.

Man, I hope this isn't actually about trying to solve Violet's housing issues!

This is just a primer. Something to get us used to what the gameplay will be like this season. I'm sure there will be various methods of play, but this is just something similar to what we can expect. The story is just something Mind Candy thought would get us interested in a character and to prepare us.

layout of pictures

Just to make things a little clearer i got:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Basement = Plan 5
First floor = Plan 2
Second Floor = Plan 7
Third Floor = Plan 11
Forth floor = Plan 6

Front of building (Lets call it north facing )= plan 3
West face = plan 10
South face = plan 1
East face = plan 9

west to east intersection = plan 4
north to south intersection = plan 8

I hope this is right and it is of some help

I am new at ARG's and was waiting to start this one.

Ok, this is what I think are important hints from the text.

1. Violet lives on the second or third floor at the front of the building. Not clear yet if she lives left or right. Gives us 4 possibilities.
2. There is only 1 set of waterpipes running through her floor. So that is probably how to determine which apartment she is in.

The last 'hint' is not very clear. The leaking apartment recieves his water 12 flats before violets flat. What does that mean ? My guess will be that if we find that Violet lives in apartment #14, the leaking apartment gets his water from apartment #2 ? (14-12).

What I still don't understand what we need to do when we find the solution... email her ?

so

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Violet flat lives in flat 7#
and the leak is in flat 13#

I had a go and got something almost the same, I think there's a little ambiguity, but then again, I may be wrong...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought she was is 7 and that the leak was in 12, it depends if the 12 includes the flat that's leaking or not, either I'm pretty sure that one of us is right... Sadly she's not replyed to my email yet...

 email

She's not answering her mail right now, but here's to hoping that she will soon...

Violet Kiteway is not answering her keymail right now. There's a small possibility she's travelled through a hole in the spacetime continuum to a new world, but it's more likely she's just asleep.

If you can't wait that long to hear her voice or read her words, go to http://www.violetunderground.com/ for a quick fix.

I get a similar answer. I agree that there is ambiguity because the pipes double back on themselves.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I don't think that Violet lives in apartment #7 because plan4.jpg shows both pipe A and pipe B in the internal wall. She says that "[the other set of pipes] apparently doesn't run through any of the walls or floor of my flat." I take this to mean that she lives in the right hand side of the building (as viewed from the front)

I think I got this one too.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Her living on the right hand side of the building also fits to the only 4 storied building on northwest corner of west caldera street/zahier lane, where she's got a good view over Zahir Gardens.

Cool, nothing like a bit of Perplex Plumbing to get you thinking!

OK, so I may have over thought this one:

Anyway, I was getting the same room numbers as everyone else, but then I read the instructions again. I think I'm on the same page as Lysithea.

It's a series of tubes.

You think you over-thought it ne0x:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/SixSidedSquare/BadPlumbing.gif
(warning, approx 1 meg gif file)

I have missed how pxc can help me distract myself so very well when I have work to do Smile

I'm in similar thoughts to most everyone else, so here's what I think with logical reasoning to boot:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I assumed a pipe only counted as going under the floorboards if it actually crossed under them, and not if it was only in the part where a wall meets the floor. This can interpreted from none of the top down floor plans showing pipes that run along walls and that Vi said "Each flat receives its water from under the floor boards".

Now reasoning through, there are two ways this can go, that each apartment only takes water from a single point on a pipe, or that apartments can get water from more than one spot on a pipe.

More than one point option:
The list of floors pipe B goes under (using the previous corner rule) is as follows, with o's indicating the pipe doing a loop:
12
11
12
13 o
5 o
6 o
7
1 o
3 o
4 o
1
2
1
8
9 o
10
7 o
8
1 o
Using the statement of pipe A not running through Vi's apartment walls or floor, there is only the possibility of her living in #4, #6 or #10 (not counting the corners as wall or floor pipes). From these, only #10 has 12 or more apartments before it, so she must live in apartment #10. 12 apartments before #10 is #13, so #13 looks to be the unlucky culprit.

Of course this could have problems in that just because a pipe goes under a floor doesn't mean that apartment has to access it, meaning the 12 count could be changed and the answer could change to #12 or #11.

For the single point option:
Looking at the single point idea, you can see pipe B goes through 13 of the 14 rooms. If the leak is coming from 12 apartments previous, then the only way that this would work would be with the first and last apartments that take water from the pipe being your apartment and the leakers. Using that you are in apartment #10 as found above, this must be the last on the list, and each apartment only can be on it once, so you get:
12 **
11 ****
12 **
13
5
6
7
1
3
4
2
8
9
10
The problem I've highlighted here with this option is that without knowing which time for the pipe passing through #12 is used, we can't tell which comes first on the list, and is therefore 12 before your apartment and the leaker. The closest you can come this way is that it is either 12 or 11.

In conclusion, the plumber that made these pipes, should be shot.

Phew, that was bigger than I first expected. Hopefully it actually makes sense and the starting assumptions I made about corner pipes was right, or else it all falls apart.
