Folks I suggest printing or photocopying your map and then folding
the copy so that you dont ruin your original.
Just a thought.

have you signed up for the "volvo points" yet? When you sign up for Volvo Points it give the name of 3 future puzzles?
Puzzle 9 (opens May 9) - Bay of Bengal:
Puzzle 13 (opens May 16) - South of Java
Puzzle 17 (opens May 23) - Indian Ocean
Do you think this is a mistake? Can't we use this to at least narrow down the coords before we even get there?

Nope they will just give you the map and wish you good luck.
No additional info required.
That's why they have you fill in the form online instead.
Makes life easier for the dealers. All they have to do is hand out
the maps.
Cheers.

Not likely; last year the coords were always off just enough that they were placed off of the actual locale for the people using Google Earth.

The Map... puzzle 5 As far as I can read... everyone is pretty stumped with the map... unless you all are just being coy. I've read that we should fold the map, but I can't find any clue that really tells us to fold the map. (am I missing something major?)
The email says to "use the clues on the parchment to understand the pirate chart". The email included had a picture of the skull and a mirrored set of ships that are also on the map/chart we got at the dealer. I've read that we should put the chart (or part of the chart depending on the poster)in the mirror.
The narator says "drifting lost in shifting shades of blue as far as my eyes can see - the pirate chart it keeps the key"
So, on the map there is a line going through the skull's eye. Does it mean anything?
I also see four sets of four numbers that we saw on "the man".
The top set is 5584 and last quarter phase moon (number 7 on a moon chart... does it mean anything).
The set on the right has two characters (the two middle characters) I can't find but the two outside numbers are 3 and 9 and a waning crescent moon (number 8 on a moon phase chart).
The set on the left has two characters I can't find anywhere, but the other two are 4 and 5 and a waning gibbous moon which is number 6 on a moon chart.
The set going straight through the middle is 2772 with a first quarter moon (number 3 on the moon chart)
The thing that really bothers me about this chart is that we've already ran into numbers in 5 different languages and this chart has so many characters I don't know. For example... those chinese (or Japanese) characters going down the right of the chart. What are they? Are they some poignant instructions that I'm missing? Ditto with all of those other characters on that big arc across the chart and the tiny little characters around the torn circle on the upper left.

Had the same problem in Netscape 7, switched to IE and it worked. May be a browser problem.

fold map to make a boat To find the instruction about making a boat:
On the first puzzle page, there is a section at the top
(where you find Next Destination)
called About the Hunt (click that)
on the left side there is section called How to Hunt (click that)
Then there is a question:
I have a Pirate Chart and a clue, now what? (click that)
The answer is
Imagine you are making a boat. How do I do that?
Now take a good look at your Pirate Chart and make use
o' the lines drawn on it.
I think we better learn to fold paper. Because it sounds like
we'll be folding that map a lot.

The Paper Ship Does anyone else have a problem with these photos? My problem is (in looking at these photos) they did not fold on the lines.
The photos appear to be a classic origami ship folded symmetrically (see: http://www.mathematische-basteleien.de/paper_ship.htm ). "How to Hunt" implies that this should be a ship, but which origami design would we choose. It's a little too open ended with a few designs out there.
I don't think it should be this difficult and we might be reading into it a little too deeply, still.

Folding the map Volvo Map My map is folded so many times I think I broke the Seven fold theroy. lol
Here's what I got so far if you match up the two quarter moons together on the fold lines you get symbols similar to the ones on the dead body except they are in reverse image form hence the mirror thing with the ships. I am printing out a new map to cut and paste these together to see what I get. I'll let you know!
If anyone else has anything please let me know.
Thanks

I'm kind of stuck now as I'd love to play the game but I'm not near a Volvo dealership. So there's no way of getting a code....I just like the puzzles, don't really care about the contest part so cruddo.
