Best thing to do is go over everything again, like the volvo chart and locations, and see if there is anything you might have missed which could be of use later, like last year. That will help the time fly. Last year, Volvo were sending out regular emails with clues, That's not happening this year. Also, they have changed the puzzle opening time to location specific. I think that they have done this to stop us from jumping to countries sites that used to open earlier!

Chances of winning? Greetings all,
My first post here and sorry if I wrote in the wrong thread...well maybe not since I am waiting for the Bay Of Bengal puzzle. =)
What I have realized is that this kind of puzzle is not for everyone.
Especially if you are a bit young and never have done this kind of riddles and puzzles before. Tried Draculas Riddle and came pretty far, but got almost a serious mental breakdown by over thinking each question and puzzle =)
Can I ask you for how long period of time it took you to solve each puzzle?
Spent 2 hours on the first one, trying all different kind of combinations until I found this forum. And of course it has become a habit reading the spoilers, which of course will not increase my chance of winning - and others doing the same thing.
The chances of winning the first prize is slim, would be interesting finding out how many do participate in this game world wide =)
Since I am not from US or other highly populated country, maybe I have a chance ?!? =)
Btw, is there someone here who came in the finals last year or close?
Cheers and happy hunting!

Remember, the first 20 puzzles are just for fun and exercise, they probably have no impact on actualy winning. But to answer your question in my case:
1. World's End/start -- parchment compass puzzle. About 3 minutes to figure out the mechanics of the puzzle, and 1 more minute to solve it.
2. Cuba -- crab and sand puzzle. Under a minute to find the first crab. Maybe 3 minutes of clicking crabs to get the answer.
3. Port Royal -- wall map puzzle. About 10 minutes to figure out the scratching mechanic. Two more minutes to solve after that.
4. Southwestern Atlantic -- painted body puzzle. A good 60 minutes of puzzling over possibilites before I got the right idea. And probably another 30 minutes before I discovered where the 8 symbol was...it blended with body art pretty well. So a bit under 2 hours.
5. Southeastern Atlantic -- pirate chart/skull and ship puzzle. Haven't gone to pick up a map yet. Just swiped the answer from forums to get to #6. I'll go back and do it for fun when I get the map, hopefully without looking at the how-to spoilers.
6. Cape of Good Hope -- linking chains/buoy puzzle. About 15 minutes.
7. Socotra -- maze/tiles puzzle. About 30 minutes to get the path charted, and another 10 to figure out the symbols.
8. Ceylon -- spices puzzle. About 30 minutes.

yea there is. the puzzle is at 1030 am on may 8th for me....todays was at 1030 am on may 7th...it maybe different for yall but w/ my time zone thats how its working.... and the hunt started on may 4th and had 4 puzzles already started on that date. just wondering if thats how they did it last year, w/ one puzzle a day? or only one puzzle a day until the last bunch of puzzles when they release them all at once b/c time really matters?

Hey Lummi:
In response to your questions...
1) I think in the main POTC thread someone actually mentioned they were almost a finalist, but didn't pick up the phone when Volvo called and when they called back Volvo saying they had received a call from that number, Volvo told them they would have been a finalist if they picked up, or something like that.
2) I also have never done this game before. I also tend to over think:)
My times for each puzzle have looked like this:
1)World's End-I did not know you could interact with these puzzles aka click or move things on the screen. Therefore, I stared and stared for about 2 hours at the screen trying to figure out if I even saw any numbers. I mistakenly, and thankfully, found out that you could interact! Then it took me about 5 minutes.
2)Cuba-Found the crabs right away, probably took me like 10/15 minutes of random clicking to uncover enough where I knew the code.
3)Port Royal-After figuring out I could click and move forward out of the first room (Took me about 10 minutes, I kept trying to click on the map on the left wall at the entrance hallway). I actually found the map puzzle very simple...since my first mistake with puzzle 1, I always check to see what happens if I click or move my mouse around now. Took about 3 minutes.
4)Southwestern Atlantic-This one took me awhile. I actually already knew the 8 was the half-chalice symbol, but I had problems deciphering what the other numbers meant. Prob took me about 1.5 hours to figure out the decoder was on his body.
5)Southeastern Atlantic-Cheated. Well sorta. I actually got the map online and tried to manipulate using paint to get the reflection effect, but that didn't really help and I'm going to get a map later, so I just got the code so I could continue. Prob spent about an hour photo shopping the image and staring at it.
6)Cape of Good Hope-I think I did it differently than most people, took me about 30 minutes.
7)Socotra-Maze was easy, about 10 minutes to get. Figuring out what the numbers meant took about 45 minutes.
8)Ceylon-Thought this was the easiest so far, go figure. Spent about 5-10 minutes.

Fold your map along the lines run through the shapes listed in the clue in the order they appear on the scraps in the water
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Fold 1 = along primo line,
Fold 2 = along segundo line,
Fold 3 = along the dragon line
Flip your map over and you have 11 31 in the middle.
Same again for lines through primo, the rock, and 41 giving 92 15 in the middle by the skull
