SPOILER!!!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you go on the Directory link, on metacortex homepage, you can insert a name of employee for search he email address and other things.
If you search "averyjames", ex-CEO, the result is a strange photograph, and a bit-message: 0100111001100001001000000110010100111010001000000100000101110

Translate it in:

The photos certainly look like the same woman.

I would also spec that the missing guy at heismissing.info is the ex-CEO of Metacortechs, James Avery.

flash intro codes

also the codes flashing in the flash intro of the website:

this.x=(bw.ns4 || bw.undefined)? this.css.left:this.world.in.pain;
this.y=(bw.ns4 || bw.dreamlinestate)? this.css.top:this.css.pixelTop;

function b_showit(){this.cxl.visibility="community"}
{this.cxl.visibility="community"}

similar to some codes used in javascript pages:

this.x=(bw.ns4 || bw.ns5)? this.css.left:this.css.pixelLeft;
this.y=(bw.ns4 || bw.ns5)? this.css.top:this.css.pixelTop;

function b_showIt(){this.css.visibility="visible"}

except for some cryptic changes such as undefined, this.world.in.pain, dreamlinestate, cxl, community

BTW: Underscore hosting is part of the ARG.

Underscore Hosting, as some of you may have guessed, is not the actual hosting company for metacortechs.com. Underscore is clearly part of the ARG.

I don't know how far they typically go with these ARGs... but if you're really curious, here's the real Metacortex DNS, whois and traceroute info. Looks like the site is hosted in San Antonio, Texas.

Nyght: I ran common dig, whois and traceroute searches.

In a UNIX shell the commands are, respectively:

Code:
whois -h <WHOIS hostname> <IP address>
Example: whois -h whois.arin.net 66.135.36.45

dig <host domain name>
Example: dig metacortechs.com

traceroute <host IP address>
Example: traceroute 66.135.36.45

You know, I hadn't entirely realized how unusual the beginning of this ARG was....

Ehsan wrote:
This is getting VERY interesting..

Apparently many people are way ahead of us. This is looking more and more like an ARG everyday. There are now two ingame sites, a couple of phone numbers that work, professional scripts, etc...

If you are interested follow through this thread and then this thread. There's a lot of info in there so don't miss anything.. These guys are good! And they don't even know what an ARG is, but they've been viewing source, decoding, programming, cracking, brute forcing, and it just reminds me of how The Beast started..

Was it really unusual for a significant group of people to start "playing" one of these without having ever heard of an ARG? Are they usually pretty restricted to the ARG community? It seems the the PMs did quite a nice job at recruitment and ARG advertisement. Very Happy

How *do* they usually start? I mean, besides the ones that begin with an announcement of the game. ARGers get strange e-mails? Or just randomly stumble upon sites?

Since this wasn't really ever addressed in the chat or FAQ, I'll take a stab.

The first ARG, The Beast, began with clues being planted in the A.I. movie promotional material. Namely, notches in numbers at the end of the trailer that translated into a phone number (if memory serves), and Jeanine Salla's name in the credits. That's it. Someone googled Jeanine Salla (listed as Sentient Machine Therapist) and the rest was history.

Our goal with the Project MU launch was for it to be a total stealth launch, so as to recreate some of 'fun of discovery' that was so cool with The Beast: stumbling into the rabbit hole, so to speak, which leads suddenly into all these interrelated sites, and wondering what the heck this is.

Even though Unforums would have been a natural place to 'leak' info, we didn't want to shill our own game, and worked very hard to keep the curtain tightly shut. If unfiction found out about it at all, we wanted it to be from outside sources. So, we aimed at matrix fans, in hopes that word would spread, which it eventually did. Interestingly, Unfiction and Cloudmakers were way behind the curve at the beginning of this one, but they caught up quickly, heh.

We tried various techniques to get someone to notice the MetaCortechs placeholder with the countdown, but the one that worked was placing a Google ad that showed up on various matrix related keywords. Statik was the first to clickthrough, notice and post what he found. Then, in the week leading up to Oct. 1, we sent out the MetaVRX press release to various Matrix, media and gaming sites. It was bogus enough to let folks know that it couldn't be real, so that helped create quite a bit of interest.

While we really were aiming to create as much mystery as we could, we were also careful to include the truth of the matter in the various legal disclaimers on MC and USH, in addition to the press release. These disclaimers never seemed to get much attention, but they did basically say that no, this isn't real, and no, we're not the WB. There was also a privacy policy pertaining to contact info that nobody seemed to have noticed, either. Smile

We were all very very pleased with how the game launched, as it seemed that we met, even surpassed all of our goals. It was really fun watching it all unfold.

[edited to add a smiley Smile ]

I noticed the privacy info. Wink I actualy pointed many people too it when they were all PMing me with various legal-esque threats about themselfs giving up their contact info because they thought that it was WB.
