 [REF]Story So Far
Edited as of May 20th

Game Description: This game currently relies heavily upon Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, internet security and hacking. The trailhead launched with many people receiving "swag", and has included an additional deaddrop. According to the Eldritch Errors website, this game will include mature themes and is intended for audiences over the age of 18

Summary:

Packages in the Mail: the Trailhead
BA Saint Feline, a psychic, sent out packages to UF members and individuals active in the Cthulhu communities starting on April, Friday the 13th. Apparently, Ms. Feline experienced dreams of the package recipients climbing up a mountain either moving towards--or away from--some unknown horror. Each package had a corresponding Craigslist entry. Varin received the first package on April 16th, with more coming the same day. Currently, there have been four batches of thirteen Craigslist messages posted under "Missed Connections" signed "bseeingu".

Convincing the Doubtful: Discovering Sentry Outpost
The contents of the packages led players to Sentry Outpost on April 20th, a community dedicated to the discussion of online security (with a blog, forum, and wiki page). On December 17th, their website was compromised and the community, now reduced to nine members, started to rebuild. At first surprised and suspicious by the influx of "new members", the Sentry Outpost members are beginning to grow concerned as they receive packages themselves starting on April 24th--HPhack, a Sentry member, had his house infested with crickets after he burned his package. Some Sentries experienced chilling nightmares. Now, the Sentries started to seriously investigate what is going on.

Hacking the System: DC Gives Us the Finger
Players continued to phone in their dreams to B. Saint Feline's telephone number and the Craigslist entries continued to stream in, indicating a package needed to be picked up from a psychicin New York City. Sinyx made the trek to the psychic on May 6, who handed off a package including a green finger and a letter from "DC". The Eldrich Errors website updated with a different sort of "Story So Far".

The Website Compromised: We Learn of nec.Romoni.com
Meanwhile, Marie (one of the sentries) noticed over 9TB of traffic on the Sentry Outpost website, and started to investigate along with Bryce (the site admin). Their ISP reported another website on the same server experiencing similar problems. Stur, the administrator of Ronomi.com, a personal blog about online security, stepped forward as the other site's owner on May 10th.

Open Your Ports: We Start Frolicking in the MUD
Sentry members, with Stu's aid, discovered suspicious activity on their ports. Thanks to hard work by players like 4thElement, they were able to download filedumps for numerous ports on May 15th. Some of this revealed information about our Sentries, who are are connected to Miskatonic University in Lovecraft's town of Arkham. Others led players to a MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) set up by a user named "chorazos". Icculus, an admin and "MUD guru" from mudconnect offered to help get players connected.

More than a little lost....

I'm a little lost as to how to join this ARG....I wasn't on the Lovecraft ARG as I didn't really know about it. The trailhead said there was no email address anymore so how am I to connect with BA Feline.... I love horror but not of the extremely disturbing kind so this seems perfect for me. Is it almost finished?

I sound like a newb but I'm not....I'm just a tinge confused.

Hey coffeegirl! Smile

As with most ARGs, there's no real way to "join" it. You should probably register an account on the sentryoutpost.com forum, but that's all I can think of. Just read whatever you can and help with whatever looks interesting. Smile

The game seems to be just starting, so now's a great time to get involved. The only thing that's really new since that "story so far" was written is the package they found in alphabet city. You can read about that here:

I already registered an account and I'll be sure to check out the link. I was sort of confused as the ARG started with people receiving packages out of the blue.

Head over to the Sentry Outpost site. In the forums is a Field Work section. That has the current puzzles we are working on.

Ok, here's a very quick and very dirty reference. I have no idea how to do wiki and I know I am missing some information here but for what it's worth:

May 24
New post on StuRs blog: http://www.ronomi.com/2007/05/im_so_sick_and_tired_of_the_sh_2.html He has been assisting Bryce aka Themagician in investigating the boil.c file.

May 26
Bryce disappears from computer interaction.

May 27
Marie aka Mkaos is contacted by the police. Bryce has had a breakdown and is now in an asylum. He was covered in blood when found and is basically catatonic. His computer room was covered in deaad birds, blood, and feathers. His whiteboard had the following messge: /backups/121606 = boil and a big WARN MARIE!

May 29
Sapagoo creates a get well card for Bryce: http://www.sentryoutpost.com/wiki/index.php?title=Get_well_card

May 30
James Stone notes differences between opriginal boil file and current boil file: http://www.sentryoutpost.com/wiki/index.php?title=BOIL_Process and also that the boil file updates daily.

June 4
James Stone finds http://www.ronomi.com/MT/. on the server.

June 4-19
Two week gap in CL postings.

Kevin aka GetMeOut drives to Florida and meets BA. He gives us very little information other than she is a real person who can't sleep and does have the dreams posted in CL. He determines that she did not send the packages. Kevin acts "different" after the visit.

June 26
Sapagoo creates CL summary: http://www.sentryoutpost.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=298

June 29
Access is gained to the second MUD which contains the following:

The Gate
Quote:
The Gate
Crumbling stones sketch a broad courtyard. The harsh glare of
afternoon. The sharp shadow of a huge tower across flagstones. The
drone of hundreds of monks hidden in shadow. The clanking of their
prayer wheels spinning in time. Occultation. There is no peace at the
gate. Light goes into the ground. The bones thrown reveal their
trigrams. Earth above. Fire below.
Contents:
choraz, The Altar, The Bargainers' Sigil, The Black Swan, Obtusitivity
Visible Exits:

Choraz
Quote:
choraz
Meditating. Raiment of a caretaker. Eyes shut but seeing. The left
hand, held aloft. Thumb and finger make a circle. Smallest extends
while others cross. The right hand hidden. An inappropriate smirk.

The Altar
Quote:
#The Altar
Broken. Discarded. Misused. Reborn. Given new purpose. Stones crackle
with current and fire.

The Bargainer's sigil
Quote:
#The Bargainers' Sigil
A strange, sinuous sign painted on the flagstones. A single line: a
tortured, beautiful path. It invokes the Bargain. It promises
spectacle.

The Black Swan
Quote:
#The Black Swan
Lucky. Trapped. Trussed in supplication. Fragile. Terrified beyond
struggle. The Bargainers' Sigil drawn around it.

Marie is informed that Kevin aka GetMeOut has hanged himself.

July 4
Access to the new MUD is lost again.

 Quick question

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm new to this and I'm not sure if this obvious or already answered somewhere else.

I was wondering how whoever sent the packages new the addresses of members of your site and the one's on sentryoutpost. I was also wondering if you know by now whether this is just a complex ARG or something more close to real life.

Thank you.

SableKing,

Some players have submitted their contact details to the Contact thread so they can be contacted by new games; other players are so active in the community that the developers can find their addresses in other ways; and lastly, puppet masters have weird ungodly powers. That's all any of us need to know.

And rest assured, this is definitely a game - the meta site can be found at EldritchErrors.com.

I couldn't get to it for a couple weeks. I'll have to try again.

Has anyone been able to access the MUD since July 4 (besides Taluria)?

Nope, neither of the two separate MUDs are able to be accessed since Kevin(GetMeout)'s site went down.

I'm realizing that this thread and the wikis are needing some much needed attention for anyone new coming in. They are really outdated. If I find some time, I'll try to take a stab at the current sitch with the Sentries, BOIL, MUDs, etc. Anyone else is free to update as well Smile *NUDGE!

Since we seem to be doing a lousy job of keeping this up, here are a couple of resources to get caught up on the story:

In-game:

Out-of-game:
