[UPDATE] Violet Underground - 9th May 2007 More Delayed Parcels
Quote:
More Delayed Parcels
Wednesday May 9, 5:23pm
Get this - Cassia, one of the new scribes at the Academy, has also been having problems with delayed parcels. The Perplex City Post Office guarantees that all post anywhere in the city will arrive within five hours of being sent. So this is weird. Cassia says she doesn't have time to pursue it, but I want to find out what's going on. Is it just this part of the city? Is it just one kind of parcel? Am I just procrastinating?
I tried calling up the Post Office but they - probably truthfully - said that everything is statistically normal. So the problem's obviously a subtle one and will need some teasing out. If we can run a series of experiments, we should be able to isolate which part of the system isn't working properly. Of course, doing that will involve getting inside the Post Office. So... since you guys are so good at persuading people, can you find a contact in the Post Office who might be happy to help us out.

Well, I've been poking around the post office site, haven't really found anything useful yet.
I'm guessing that somewhere on this page or here is a hint, or when we get a tracking number we can get some more information.

Dropping an email to the guy who wrote into the Sentinel gets an exciting autoresponse. Presumably when that comes online we'll be able to have some more fun.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The address is ralph.kerriganSPLAT perplexcitypost.com .
Do you know every morning the Postmaster General himself is asking me what's being done about these delay reports? Do you have any idea what that's like? My whiskers are so very singed over this 'parcel delays' rubbish, I can hardly see straight anymore.
If you think you know the post system better than me, then be my guest and try to prove it. Have a go at our demonstration system yourself - http://www.perplexcitypost.com/secure/ext/demo14 . It could take a couple of days to set it up for where you're based, but it'll be done soon. Just be sure to tell all of the other yapping complainers and certain scandal-mondering newspapers that there's nothing to be found once you're done.

Did that need spoilering, maybe, you can never be too sure I guess....

I'm guessing that this may come in handy later for the puzzle, so here's a summary of the shipping options:
SPEED
Note: If size or weight are incorrectly chosen, the time will increase
- Priority Express: 30 - 60 minutes
- Priority: 1 to 2 hours
- Standard: 3 to 5 hours
SIZE
- Normal: All dimensions no greater than 50 cm
- Large Box: One or more dimensions over 50 cm
- Tube: Cylindrical packages
- Irregular: Neither rectangular or cylindrical
WEIGHT
- Weight must simply be specified to insure prompt delivery
ADDITIONS
- Insurance
- Signature Required
- Delivery Confirmation
- Fragile Handling
It should also be noted that, unlike on the PXC academy LIbrary website, the tracking entry fields are real, and require a tracking number and password, which most likely talks to a database.

I agree, but it is good to know that this will give us any pages that might be hiding. So much for searching for that random URL!
Also, has anyone else thought that this might be a dead end? I think that there's got to be something else we should be doing...
Also Also, I just noticed that the link mentioned waay up there is the only link that shows that page (as opposed to all invalid pages redirecting to that page). Don't know if it helps.

I sent one to:
PBC Studios
Priority Express
Normal
1000g (so 1kg)
Delivery Confirmation
So when I get word I'll tell you.
~~~~~~~~~~
Later....
The package has been delivered...at 6:09pm on May 10, 2007 (well 270 Violet's time). Oh and that's almost immediately after I sent it as they seem to be using GMT time. I forgot that...
I'm also trying different weights as well. I've sent out quite a few so let's see what happens.
A rough strategy that may produce some results:
I've tried sending a number of parcels with different combinations of speed, shape and additions. If it's any one of the options for each of those factors that's causing the problems then I can cross-reference the parcels that are delayed to find out which factor it is. To keep it simple all the parcels are the same weight and have the same destination.
Parcels sent:
1 Standard/Normal/Insurance
2 Priority/Large Box/Signature Required
3 Priority Express/Tube/Delivery Confirmation
4 Priority Express/Irregular/Fragile Handling
5 Standard/Tube/Fragile Handling
6 Priority/Irregular/Delivery Confirmation
7 Priority Express/Normal/Signature Required
8 Priority Express/Large Box/Insurance
For example, if parcels 4 & 5 are delayed, then 'Fragile Handling' is the problem
If all parcels arrive on time, then I'll try some more parcels so that every possible combination of two factors is tested, then three, and if that doesn't work I'll introduce weight and destination, though the number of parcels to be sent to test these would be big so we perhapsshould work on a group strategy as Violet suggests.
So far I have tried the combinations of speed vs shape keeping destination, weight and additions constant. (I used Agilon Al, 1g and no additions). That makes 12 combinations unless I've stuffed up already.
I've got 12 tracking codes, so just got to watch them.
Sounds like a good strategy, Albedo.
As the speed, shape, and additions variables are already being covered, I'm going to see if there's any variation with destination. I'm sending packages to all destinations with Standard, Normal, 1000g packages and no additions. We'll see what comes up.
Does anyone know where the Post Office is located?
