The Early Post Saga
What Volvo has to say....

I thought I'd share a bit of info with y'all here. Hopefully it will put minds at ease.

I have a friend that documented everything this morning. She ran IPs, screen shot posts, double checked time stamps, and sent a summary in to Volvo. The first reply she got was automated. Then, believe it or not, she received an email from an honest to goodness live Volvo rep.

The just of that email was this: Volvo was QUITE aware of the situation, and they have a full investigation going. It sounded as if they already had all the info she provided. The personal reply was within 2 hours of her sending in the info this morning. They reassured her that if any infractions were found, this person would be dealt with. They are not going to cancel the game.

I'd publish it here, but I don't have permission, so you'll either have to take my word that I saw the email, or not.

I say GAME ON! If they have done anything illegal or against the rules, it won't affect us. Besides, I want that job at Volvo, where you sit around all day and run programs on the folks trying to hack, and read message boards. I can just imagine what our posts look like from their perspective! Heh!

Very Happy

FYI, there's no encryption on the websites...

The rest is just sitting behind good ol' fashion firewalls until it is promoted. Without getting too deep, Volvo is tracking us through session scripts. Volvo servers log every IP address that hits every page. Even if the IP address is masked, it can be tracked back to the Host (provider). If this guy is good enough to hack Volvo, then he masking his Host IP as well. On the same front, this is also used to thwart hackers (masking the server IP address). I would assume Volvo would be doing this, not that it made a difference for him. With a name like cypherguy, I could only guess who he works for.

It wouldn't take much to write a little spider program, utilizing the url fragment that stays constant then; generates the coords from variables, concatenating your N,S,E,W. A form GUI could be developed, allowing you to to enter a guessed range, to be sure you weren't searching every coord on the globe. The output would be a report with your 404's and your 1 successful hit. With the coords only in degrees and minutes, the combos should cycle pretty quick (especially if you have already narrowed it down with your range entry).

Would this be cheating? Automating something that could be done manually (plugging in coords)? I'm really interested on seeing the turn around on this.

Sorry if I lost ya, but I know what I'll be doing this weekend...

I used the word encrypted in its broadest sense. If you look in your temporary internet files and look at the swf you will see strings of text following the flash file. Without hacking that flash file, the only way to get it to play is to copy all that crap into your browsers address bar.

You will notice when you do this that there APPEARS to be a virtual folder structure. Presumable this is done so that people cannot just create a list of directories on the site. This is what I meant by encryption. Sorry if I used the wrong term. I am afraid I am not a L33+ H4CKZ0R.
