Not a reed but a rope

With the screen mask removed it turns out what I though was a reed is actually a rope.

Looks like we are going to do some climbing!

or knot counting....

miamimama Says:

Either a figure 8 knot or overhand knot…detailed not enough in photo. Also both used as stopper knots (to keep the line from running). Used with an hour glass knots were used in determining depth or speed by counting the # of knots as they ran through the crews hands.

In some sailing ships, speed was measured by casting the chip log from the stern. The log was relatively immobile, and attached by line to a reel. Some sources suggest that knots placed at a distance of 47 feet 3 inches (14.4018 m) passed through a sailor's fingers, while another sailor used a 30 second sandglass (28 second sandglass is the current accepted timing) to time the operation.[citation needed] The knot count would be reported and used in the sailing master's dead reckoning and navigation. This method gives a value for the knot of 20.25 in/s, or 1.85166 km·h−1. The difference from the accepted value today is a bit less than 0.02%.

from wikipedia on knots...

Can't Fathom this Puzzle Yet!

Although this puzzle may hold deep promise, upon doing my research a sounding line did not include knots. This puzzle may indeed be a measurement of speed which does include knots. The line is very taut as if it is fastened to something. We shall see real soon.

Black Screen

I've heard of the blue screen of death but this is a new one and I though Volvo's colors were blue.

The site must be dead!
