I can only hope there is more story soon.
God I couldnt agree more. I go over to SO and try to understand but all I see is 'blahblahblahblahblahblah' I can make a damn fine website, but as far as hacking goes, I dont understand it one bit.
I'd say Occultus and crew are doing a pretty good job of making it easy for the layperson to replicate. I don't have the slightest idea what telnet is, but I've been able to replicate everything they're doing on a mac, which means I've had to improvise some of the PC specific instructions. I think if you read very carefully, you can get to where everyone else is now: an Offset prompt that spits out babble when you type in numbers.

Replicating something I don't remotely understand doesn't sound like too much fun to me....whether I replicate it or not, it'll still look like blahblahbah to me...
Kudos to those who "get" this and have the ability to glean something from it. I've kept myself busy looking for walls, angels and cemteries for the past month it seems, with absolutely no payoff....the looking was fun for awhile....but I think I've exhausted every avenue I can think of, and my brain to boot.
remainder removed as per catherwood's polite suggestion

I didn't mean to imply that I'm frustrated with the game (so far). Bored, maybe just a teensy bit, but it's really a good thing that we have a leisurely pace. I don't have hours every day to spend watching plot points fly by -- and there is something more realistic about the day-to-day incremental minutia.
One other observation I meant to toss into the mix is the dangling carrot of Cthulhu. I absolutely love Lovecraft, and it's the one thing that's keeping me from falling completely back into the lurker shadows. Yet, it's still only vaguely hinted at. I really liked the analogy up-thread with the slow progression of madness -- it was a major selling point for games like "Eternal Darkness". If you just opened a door and saw Cthulhu, you'd die of fright! Instead, this slow acclimation to impending doom sets the mood, and lets the horror creep up on you. I'll enjoy what they're giving us now with that in mind -- but I do expect a major payoff in the next chapter.
p.s. -- this isn't the thread for talking about in-game specifics, take those to their specific puzzle threads. We're only about the "meta" here.

Count me amongst the hacking Illiterati as well. Ports you say. Make mine tawny, please. Telnet? A device for catching telbutterflies perhaps? The game does feel a bit "exclusive" so far, but I'll gladly chalk that up to seeing only a part of the whole. I have faith in GMD. More importantly, at least for myself, is reuniting with a rather large portion of Tinfoil Posse .
I've tried posting at SO, but to be honest, I don't feel..."Welcome" isn't the word...appropriate? 'Til then, I think I will participate behind the scenes through the use of PM's (I'm speaking of SO, not here). Hopefully things will open up a bit, although I guess it's possible that I don't fit into the demographic they are seeking (I don't really believe that ). It's early, we'll see what happens.

I felt the same way about the CL postings. Not one of them made a tiny bit of sense to me. I hung around because I was amazed at how some people could actually make sense of them...enough sense to get some swag out of it!

If it helps any, I DO understand it and my eyes glaze over when it's being discussed. I can play with Telnet at work all day if I want (and at my last job... I did). I want characters and stories here.
That said, I know the story isn't tailored just to my tastes, and I suspect the whole technology angle is part of a "After years/decades/centuries of waiting, the Internet has finally given [whoever] the ability to bring enough people together to [do whatever it is they do]" thing.
So I'll be sticking around (not that anyone else said they were leaving), and I'll even help with the techie stuff when I can.

Thats all very well said and done, but I for one cant just 'copy things'. I have to understand what I'm doing. On top of that, certain illnesses I have dont make it any easier for me to understand a whole load of random letters and charecters.
I am enjoying watching everyone over at SO figuring all the technical stuff out, mainly I'm in awe. But I feel like an extra limb over there. Aside from making websites look pretty and some html knowledge, computers instill a fear into me only previously found in 2001: A Space Odyssey / Lawnmower Man / Virtuosity.
I feel like I have nothing valuable to add over there However that doesnt mean I'm not enjoying myself. Im so excited about this game I cant even tell you, Lovecraft and weirdness - bliss!

Well, the entire game isn't about Highly Technical Stuff, if the CL posts are any indication, so don't go anywhere because you never know when we may need you.

Haha! Oh dont worry, I'm not leaving this game When the time comes for crazy conspiracy theories, and spookyness I'll hurl myself into it
I keep lurking on the SO forums because I'm hoping I might learn something technical along the way!

I split out the Exu character analysis to its own thread.

Is anyone else having trouble figuring out who we can and can't trust on the SO fora? Some of the new "players" like Icculus are obvious PM-created entities perceived as necessary to our forward progress.
But I'm having more trouble trying to figure out the motives of some of the other "players". Most of the original SO denizens are holding to the behaviors we've come to expect from them. Mkaos joining in and hanging out in the MUD environment with us was a little of a surprise. But some of the more recent players are hard for me to figure out. Saying BA is just relaying their dreams, directly, without posting their dreams, beforehand. The "wise-assed(ness)" jibes/obfuscations. The Technomage babble. Guess I need a program.

Just so you know, I did think about where to post the information on Exu, and as it wasn't a post about the IG character himself, and more an examination of why the PMs might have chosen that nic - I figured it was META. And I put in this thread simply because I didn't want to start a whole new META thread about the meaning behind his name.
