[Spec] the character Exu

I messed up this thread when i split it out of the Game Mechanics meta thread; I'll paste it here for continuity -- catherwood

I like to try to see the PMs reasoning behind certain decisions even for "little things" like choosing a name for an IGC. The newest addition (and I'm assuming he's an IG character) brought into the fold at SO is Exu. Found some interesting stuff...

Interesting site about Exu....

In addition to being the Divine Messenger, Exu has several other functions. That of a Divine Trickster and that of a Door Opener.

And even more interesting.....(his avatar at SO also seems to be the same as that of the seal pictured here - note the name of the site Wink )

Quote:
In this role, many perceive him as a prankster - a kind of Brazilian Loki, the mischief-maker of Nordic myth. But his tricks are playful, not mean. He toys with human sensibilities and upsets the status quo because he represents the necessary power of disorder which must occur occasionally for one to be able rebuild on more solid ground. In this sense, he is comparable to the Tarot card, the Tower.

An expression in Portuguese that cogently translates this concept is grau de sandice, "grain of insanity." Exu represents the kernel of madness that sparks all creativity.

The priestess in Serge Bramly's book on Macumba (Macumba: The Teachings of Maria-Jose, Mother of the Gods, New York, St. Martin's Press, 1977, pp. 195-96), aptly sums up the point:

"People weren't made to be machines. Part of us is madness, a necessary madness Exu is the master of - this is the most creative part of us. It is the space of our evolution. Without Exu what would our lives be? Nothing but a monotonous repetition of passionless acts."

Exu's dwelling is at the crossroads, which symbolizes his aspect as the great communicator and expander of horizons. He stirs up action. The crossroads are where people and ideas meet, pass, and are exchanged. Things happen at crossroads: spaces open up and close down; new directions are taken. Thus, Exu is known as the ruler of intelligence, sagacity, and wisdom. For deep down, his precinct is the ground. He guards the sacred, fathomless well of knowledge, and as such, is often likened to St. Peter.

St. Peter, the key-bearer to the gate... and also from Caterpillar's link
Quote:
Exu is also the opener of the doors; the messenger of the gods. He is a great diviner who does not need an oracle to see the future. He owns the keys to all doors, to evil as well as good.

Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.

Saint Peter is the patron saint of the city of... Providence.

Thanks for the fascinating Exu research, Caterpillar!

So Exu says he has signed an agreement of the right-handed variety. What could his profile quote mean, then? "the left hand hidden by the right"

Maybe just a reflection of his "trickster" element, or the concept of balance referred to here. I can be overly wary when it comes to these kinds of things Very Happy

Firstly, I looked below for symmetries to the prophetess' fluid past above. In the process, I might have noticed something you overlooked (or perhaps that some of you chose not share with others.) I take a piece of the server forbidden that promises a history of the past. I take a piece of a promise about the nature of the past entangled. Together, they open for me a record, an accounting of intent and error. This, of course, strikes directly the heart of Howard's question. All paths lead back to the answer.

Shocked /headache!

After the pain ... lol ... this almost sounds directive. (Server/Forbidden/Error/Record)

Yep! Just speak in plain fing English Exu. But I agree that he might be trying to hint at something-- how to get into the 'lucky' directory, perhaps?

Is the 'server forbidden" the stuff from Port 1031? Or the stuff from the "choraz" login?

"Piece that promises a history of the past" could be things like stuff from the Wiki history, or the Outpost History. Or even the astronomy parts, since all astronomy is a record of the stars as they were in the past, not as they are in the present.

"Piece of a promise about the nature of the past entangled" -- I have no clues about this one.

"Together they open for me a record, an accounting of intent and error" -- this sounds like it's for the 'lucky' password

"Howard's question" -- about the meaning of the Arabic in his dreams?

I think the log-ins reap a 401 rather than a 403.

Might be referring to the "why" and "what" is happening to him.

Then you told me it was a phrase from the Necronomicon, and I became more worried. That's a pretty dark and specific symbol for the collective unconscious to be throwing my way. That whatever this code intrusion on the server is spits up the same Arabic phrase shatters even that comfort of knowing I'm not alone in the confusion of dreams. Servers aren't part of the collective unconscious. Now Biff finds out that other Arabic phrases unlock other stuff? Enough. Too much coincidence. I don't have any more theories about what is happening to me. Or any of us.

However, "All paths lead back to the answer" again sounds computer directive....

Or it could mean "all paths" as in "past, present, future" lead to the same place?

He seems to like his "tea" which is the complete opposite of B.A.'s java obsession - not sure I trust this guy yet, but he seems like he might be a valuable source of insight (if we could understand what language he speaks). It may be that he embodies the character traits of his namesake and in order to get to the answers he holds, we might have to learn a lesson, pay a price etc.
