[ARG?] The Battle for Promicin - The 4400

I got a Google Alert for this article today about a new campaign for the 4400.

Sites so far...

http://www.usanetwork.com/series/the4400/
http://www.promicininfo.com/
http://www.promicinpower.com/
http://www.promicinterror.com/

I haven't had time to look through everything yet (there's alot!), but it looks pretty interesting so far. It seems that promicin is a drug that gives regular people powers like the 4400? Shocked

I'll give you quick explanation off the top of my head, but there is probably a wiki somewhere which would be more complete and accurate. The 4400 were returned to Earth with powers, some latent or underdeveloped. Researchers in the government (the evil Homeland Security, as i recall) discovered that their bodies were producing a new hormone, something which it was assumed to be causing or at least enhancing their abilities. The substance was called promicin, and a counter-agent was developed. Without their knowledge, every 4400 was injected with this promicin-inhibitor during their "routine" screening visits and checkups. After this immunization program was unmasked, 4400's refused further injections, and their abilities manifested in full strength for the first time since their return.

The scientist who isolated the promicin compound, and who initially developed the inhibitor drug, has also been able to synthesize promicin. He began injecting himself with the hormone -- not being a 4400 himself, he didn't know what effect it would have. Eventually we come to this point in the story where we know that the government tried creating an army of super-soldiers with the drug. Some normal people develop abilities, some seem to have no effect, and some die. The government warehouse containing mass quantities of synthetic promicin have been raided, and the drug is now being distributed on the black market.

It's the classic sci-fi conundrum: Would you take a drug which could either enhance your evolution or kill you, if you had no way to know your outcome in advance?

ooo, thanks catherwood. Very Happy

I don't think I watched the show past the first season or maybe a couple shows into season two. I keep meaning to get caught up. Maybe this will give me a reason to!

Some athletic journal (science in sports or something like that) once asked a similar question of top athletes. Would you take a performance enhancing drug that was untraceable, would get you the gold medals & world records, but kill you in a year?

90% said yes.

This is a quote from the website :

Quote:
On May 21, the site relaunched to provide new web content to support and augment the new season storyline, including several ARG (alternate reality game) and role playing elements, in addition to their posting boards, blogs, episode guide and behind the scenes material.

So... yes I think it is an ARG.

I didn't check the sites yet, but I think we've got a new one Very Happy

After taking a quick look at the sites I would expect this to be something a long thhe lines of the lost experience.promicininfo.com gives updates from both the anti and pro promicin proliferation camps which presumbly have their own sites which i haven't checked. There's video of Jordan Colier the 440 who stated the proliferation of the drug to the public as well as other characters not previously affiliated with the show making blogposts for and agaist promicin use.we have the ability to comment on the blogs but i've seen no interaction as yet That said, i'm already a fan of the show, so i'll be keeping on this as much as i can in between summer graduate classes

The 'We Took Promicin" ad is a nifty little poke at Big Pharma ads. I smiled.

These sites are rich in content. I'm looking forward to taking it all in.

Any ARG that supports user-generated content is worth playing in my book.

http://www.promicinterror.com/contribute.aspx

It's a site where you can create your own Youtube videos, blog posts, or pictures that indicate what happened to you when you took Promicin. Horribly disfigured? Amazing ability to open even the tightest of jars? It's up to you to decide what happened.

Here's some guidelines outlined on the site. Copied and pasted for your pleasure.

* Think about what the sudden release of over 17,000 vials of Promicin would do to the world. Virtually all aspects of society as a whole would be affected -- politics, economics, the media, science, technology, art, religion -- as well as possibly millions of individual lives. What effect(s) of promicin have we yet to explore?
* If you're creating a 4400 ability for your character, try to think of one we haven't already shown. Let your imagination run wild, but keep the tone of the show in mind. Think "character drama," not "comic book." Also remember that the only character to have multiple 4400 abilities was Isabelle. If you want to create another ability, just create another character to go with it!
* If you create a video, you can shoot it on whatever format you wish, but it needs to be uploaded to YouTube.com for submission. Just send the link to the video, please don't try to send the video file itself.
* Videos should be as long as they need to be to tell your story, but a good rule of thumb is "the shorter the better." Please do NOT submit videos of people faking their own death or suffering harm or any other depictions of violence. We want you to be creative, but we do not want you or anyone else to be hurt. Please do not behave in any risky, dangerous or inappropriate behavior while filming.
* If you create a video, avoid having music in it, even if it's just softly in the background or on the radio. If you don't own the copyright to all the music in your video, we won't be able to post it.
* If you show faces or other identifying personal characteristics in your videos or photos, you need those people's permission to broadcast them publicly. When submitting a video or photo, you are agreeing that you have permission from all the people appearing in it, so make sure you do!
* If you're submitting a promicin news story, don't mention any real newspapers or magazines by name. Feel free to mention the names of characters the public would know, such as Jordan Collier, Shawn Farrell or Dennis Ryland, but avoid mentioning names of "real-world" people.
* If you're submitting a news article or other image file containing text, it should be no larger than 800 pixels wide and 800 pixels high, or 2 megabytes. Images may be submitted in JPG or GIF formats.
* If you're creating a text-based story, run a spell check before you submit it, or better yet, have someone proofread it for you.
* If you're writing a story, try to include a photo or illustration to go with it if you can. It doesn't have to be fancy or high-tech -- just something that would catch your eye and make you want to read the story. These photos should be no larger than 800 pixels by 800 pixels, or 2 megabytes
* Have fun! Let your passion and enthusiasm come through in what you create. If you're excited about telling your story, others will probably be excited about hearing it!

I can think of a few community members that are perfect for this kind of thing.

just put in my 2 cents by posting to the forums at promicininfo.com. It will be interesting to see what response it generates

Smile Totally loving this.

OK, here's something for you ARGers to get working on. If you go to the PromicinTerror.com website, click on Marching Orders. Then, over on the left side of the screen, you can see two video screens with a rather large lady. The bottom one, if you mouse-over, and look at the bottom of your internet screen, you can see where the link supposedly leads to. Nothing happens if you click on it, but it links to

http://www.promicindance.com

Which needs a username and password. Does this have something to do with the promicin dancer on the Promicin Info page?

(Anyone else wishing they had come up with something other than PromicinTerror, PromicinInfo, and PromicinPower?)

Oh, and I'm pr0m1c1n on the forums.

This looks really cool...but I refuse to play it. No offense to the PM or anything, but the first ARG I was in on this site was a 4400 ARG, and it fell apart. Have fun guys ^_^.

However, this is an official extended reality, whereas the 4400 ARG that fell apart a while back was a grassroots effort. It wasn't the same team, so this one is probably safe to play (unless you still harbor anger against 4400.) Smile

BTW, these sites are pretty nifty and have me looking around on them, despite the fact that I am probably not playing this and do not watch 4400. Also, they pulled me out of my ARGing lull which is being prodded on by Real Life responsibilities. (Bleeping finals!)
