Really? Didn't we gather that he went on those retreats to Hawaii? I guess we didn't follow it through to the logical conclusion that he was using his customers' money to take trips that were effectively lavish vacations, but I think it was kinda assumed and just left unsaid. Or maybe people just didn't bother to think it through, I know I didn't... eh, I'm confused. I just thought that the word "undiscovered" implied that there was actual info that we were missing. The PMs mentioned things we didn't find on other sites besides dina.thenekodas.com, so I thought this might have something to do with it. Dunno... Confused

I didn't bother to even think about it.

Loose ends? I'm missing a half of the plot, apparently. I don't even remember the last time I felt so inadequate.

After reading this:
Steve wrote:
The Aquapolis was and atmosphere site, that was very important thematically. I won't tell you the theme, but Delos is a major hint to it. In the end, Aquapolis provided a chance for some very poetic justice.

I thought that maybe we need to rethink/clarify exactly what might have been happening there - if we have a clear picture, maybe that would remind us of a theme.

There is this program, SafeSys, that (at least by Nov. 2) oversees pretty much everything in Aquapolis. The person in charge of it is Kat. Kat was brought onboard by Walsh; as far as I see she only has two purposes - SafeSys and spying on Beth. The system is implemented "prematurely" - and Kat would probably be very aware of that.

I can see how SafeSys, being not up to par, shuts doors on drowning people instead of evacuating them. But what causes the floods to begin with? A huge drunk shark rams into the glass wall? Or - construction problems/negligence? Or is SafeSys responsible for floods itself because it just decided to randomly open vaults into the outside or something? But what could it have done to cause fire on Tinos? And why didn't the sprinklers have any pressure in them - was that, again, construction oversight, or did SafeSys or some other person/entity ensure that they wouldn't work? There are SO many "technical" questions, spread throughout the threads, that, if answered, I keep hoping would shed light on the nature and causes of the incidents, before we even get to the "theme". But it's at least good to know that the red letters don't really mean anything - just a rollover effect.

From here on it's pure speculation: maybe Kat, although aware that SafeSys is inherently dangerous, keeps it on because it's "her" project. She would then be responsible for "Stavros" dying (and, maybe, others, whose pictures did not make it into the directory?); is it "justice" enough that her own death would be a result of that decision?

Or, maybe, delta on Delos is just always flooded? That's certainly what it looks like here. Maybe it got flooded on Oct. 8 and that was never resolved? So SafeSys generates logs in perpetuity? That would make sense if all the breaches (at least after the 8th) were in places other than delta, Delos (as in, delta, Delos is not even an "incident"/event anymore) - but both second and fourth logs indicate breaches from there.

Steve wrote:

Ok. Delos. Birthplace of Apollo, "sacred island". Hmm... no cemeteries... people weren't allowed to die there. Huge trade center under Romans. Eventually totally abandoned. Yeah... what theme?

Theseus makes a short stop on Delos. So does Odysseus; he also supposedly starts out to Troy from Stavros. Nothing special, though - not enough to form a "theme". And I don't see how Delos could be a hint in an "Atlantis" theme, though that would be a cool one - Atlanteans bring about their own demise... Kat's/Metacortex' creation "sinks" and drags Kat down with it? Can't work Delos into this one, though. Also, for some reason, Oedipus comes to mind... don't know why, really.

Stavros? I couldn't remember any characters named Stavros, so I googled. Julia Glass? I didn't really come up with anything else Sad

So, I find neither enough explanation/interpretation of the logs to induce a theme, nor a theme to explain the incidents, Delos, Stavros, Kat's death, SafeSys, and "poetic justice" Sad Sad

Delos was the "funfair" from the Michael Crichton film/book Westworld.
A futuristic park full of robots that opened early (I think) and they go mad and start killing people.

Thematically, The Aquapolis was a place of relaxation overseen by a zealous AI system which maybe say people as bugs in the system and tried "ridding" itself of them!

Yeah, Westworld is a totally sweet movie, I completely overlooked it. I kept thinking Safesys was a HAL9000 thing, but the Westworld connection is right on now that they mention it. See it, Yul Brenner is this killer robot cowboy who hunts down tourists and stuff. There was a really funny Simpsons episode where they spoofed it. It also is crediting with inventing the term "computer virus."

Sorry for the "Simpsons Did It!", PMs.

A nice parallel, but unconnected to the game reality is that Delos was the name of the resort in Westworld, where the robot AI went haywire and the machines started attacking the humans.

Nice.

Just to clarify, the safesys flash file on the credits page is not in-game at all. It was the tool used to generate the screenshots for the incidentlogs. Delos level is no longer flooded.

Safesys wasn't involved at all in the cleanup/aftermath of the incidents, those were done manually, so those events weren't logged.

I would guess that with Kat out of the way, Safesys will be taken offline for awhile until it's been fully tested, so I wouldn't be surprised if there will be no more fatal accidents at Aquapolis like these.

Yep. This theme crops up in many Crichton novels. Jurassic Park was really just a retelling of Westworld. Technology/Science runs amok, gains control over its creators, and ultimately kills or eats them, heheh.

Sound familiar? Wink

It pains me to post in this thread, but I have to ask - is the faq going to be updated anymore? I'm particularly interested in ##151, 154, and 158. Also, does the lack of "answer" to #115 imply that there is something hidden in there?

Here is some information on the History of Delos.
http://www.mykonos-web.com/mykonos/delos_history.htm

But this made me think it is tied in more.

Quote:
The abundant supply of marble was crushed and used as building material and the bronze cramps that once held the ancient structures together were removed to aid in the increasing demand for metal.

Technology advancing.

I've been wondering the same thing... the idea that we can't know the answer to certain questions just yet leads me to believe that there are either puzzles/webpages that we haven't solved/found yet that will give us our answers, or that there is going to be a sequel that will answer this particular question.

Shoot. I think we burned out once the T-day holiday hit here in the U.S. We'll try to get on the newer questions soon, I think.

Seriously, I am just now beginning to feel consistently well-rested again.

If nobody minds, can someone post the FAQ in a word document for ease of reference?
