THINK TANK 2

Rose asked the following over in the puzzle thread, and I think it is worth a look at:

Quote:
Ok a new guy question : I want to spec about Caretaker and Red Knight given the information to date. Do i do that here? Do I use spoilers or not ? because I will just be posting and explaining my ideas.

I think we could make some reasonable guesses based on the info we've got. It would help get people up to speed, pass the time and other good things.

Also, I have some ideas about where the story will go and what may happen next. these are simply predictions that may well be completely wrong, do I use spoilers?

SHould we start a thread where everyone has to make some decisions based on the available info?

This is a way to make progress, even if we are wrong, we will have thought throught the problem and been forced to make a choice.

Specs would be subject to new information being available.

Your bud,
ROse

Meta:
1. The place for this type of didcussion is in the general thread.
2. Spoilers are mainly for puzzle solutions, to give those who are trying to work it out for themselves a chance to do so.
3. I like the term "theory" better than the term "decision" when speculating what direction the game is going.
4. Predictions are speculation and as such do not generally speaking need spoilers.

OK, now for the actual discussion of ideas:

Caretaker and Red Knight are the same person. Reggie/Marcus/John is the one who called him Red Knight and we have been using the two names interchangebly. Things we know about Caretaker at this point: Is former CIA (possibly retired - he no longer works for the CIA), was involved in spying on SPECTRUM/Turgenev when he worked on the soviet SPECTRUM project. May have been instrumental in helping Turgenev defect. Has had contact with Jake. Is currently protecting/hiding Reggie/Marcus/John. Still has contacts within the CIA. Is worried about the direction the research at NRU may take - wants to make certain nothing like Tabas happens again.

Caretaker

Could Caretaker be Landau from the law firm.

He was born in 1947 in Spain - I don't think you have to be born in the US to work for the CIA

He is close to the right age

His name- the name of his firm is all over the NRU webpages

I know that the Landau Institute is a real place in Russia, but I think that Turgenov being from a place that has the same last name might be a hint.

Also, the numbered lab pages are probably Turgenov's from Landau. Could that be why Jake said Caretaker's name is all over this?
The name of the institute where Turgenov wrote the notes might be Landau as part of SPECTRUM.

The law firm is obviously a front

The law firm has sided with Jake

You mean Stephen Lake or one of his partners? True, we have not ruled him, or any of them out as Caretaker. However, Reggie has said that Lake ran, and has not said anything about Caretaker's relationship to the law firm. Possible, yes, but not enough hard data, or even suspicious data, at this point.

Hmmm... could be, but names have a habit of being the same. Landau is rare enough name, but not that rare. That would be like saying all Smiths are related to the family that founded the business I work for.

There is no mention as to where SPECTRUM was being studied. IIRC there is only one Synchotron (my spelling may be off) in Russia where they might be able to do the research. COuld there be a second one, sure, but those things are 1. expensive to build, 2. would have been spotted as it was being built. So far we have nothing pointing definitely to a hidden RHIC in Russia.

What evidence are you using to base this speculation on? Nothing I have seen points that way. That they are not accepting cases or something else that may just be an artifact from the game (i.e. the PMs do not want to field a gagillion e-mails from convicts looking for a new law firm)?

That is a given. The Law firm was involved very much in the Pre-game activities. They have sided with Jake from the beginning. Current speculation is tha Jake was somehow instrumental the firm's early days. To what extent we have no real idea at this point.

My thinking

I mean Landau, the senior partner.

When I said the firm was a front, I meant it is an actual law firm, that is, Stephen Lake is really reprsenting Jake, etc. but that it operates as a part of other clandestine groups. I considered whether the site design was made to avoid clients. But in my opinion the design was made to look like a front, like the partner's resumes and the address without an office. Why even put in an address if you want to avoid contact from unknowing potential clients.

I like the spec about Landau, Rose. His bio says his clients keep him out of the office 250 days a year and the rest of the time he is golfing. So basically he is never in the office. Odd for a lawyer. I really do like this spec.

I like that spec too. I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out Caretaker's name and how it could be all over the documents we saw. This is the only one that's made sense to me so far!

Further spec and mostly questions too

1. Jake disappeared with the collaberation and cooperation of Dr. Z.
(based on the fact that Jake was in contact with him and was not hiding from him)
a. To protect Jake from something?
b. To give Dr. Z. time to do something?

2. Jake was not time traveling - merely hiding
a. we can make an accurate timeline from his log that shows him at least aware of the time of the present and guess where he is (at least some of the time) by combining the information we have.
b. for example, Meg got a postcard from Gloversville, which is near Cooperstown, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and there is a mention of Spring training in his log. He could have been in Gloversville around that time. (March)
c. Meg's postcard from Washington. Jake say's he watched the sun rise over the Atlantic which reminds me of the Star Spangled Banner (the sun rising on Fort MCHenry in Baltimore which could qualify as the ATlantic Ocean , even though it is really the Cheasepeake Bay) and he misses Meg. He could have been in Washington/Baltimore area then.

d. The parade Jake refers to could be July4th, Memorial Day or Labor Day, I think July 4 is most likely but not too strong on this and I don't really think it matters.

e. Caretaker found the Idaho fishing license receipt. Fishing on the North Fork in Idaho runs from April20 - August 4.

3. In his chat, Jake made it clear that SPECTRUM at least had been unable to recover men they had sent back into the past. It seems unlikely to me that Dr. Z would risk sending Jake back.

4. Could the "hopper" refer to the men that Dr. Z. sent back from Russia?

5. Jake's arrest could have been manipulated as a way to continue to protect Jake by keeping him away from the lab research. It doesn't make sense for the gov't to do this to Jake because it forces the government to reveal information it does not want to have to reveal in court in order to prosecute Jake.

6. It is not clear how much to trust Dr. Z. I do think he wants to protect Jake, as Caretaker, I think, suggested. Still, he has already been a traitor to his country and therefore is suspicous. He may hate communists but that Russia no longer exists. Whose side is he on? Is he just working for the advancement of science?

7. The only people I can see right now who might be "Black Knight", who are trying to take control of Dr. Z's research is someone within the administration of NRU. Could it be the President of NRU?

8. One more idea, we assume that the theft of the equipment and stuff that Jake was arrested for, was done by someone else. Was that done as sabotage or espionage or both? Caretaker confirms that NSA knew it was missing before Jake disappeared.

9. And last, will Craig Becker be the next person to disappear?

The grey people

This may be nothing, but the Catalina Community Council is listed on the NRU administration table of organization in a grey box.
