Trouble Tickets Last week I found the page http://www.nru.us/_private/result.htm . It is the contents of the trouble ticket reporting system. It appears to have been cleared. The top entry appears to be by none other then our friend, Jake Starkey. The IP is from the nru.us webservers.

This one is new to me. How did you find it???

New River University is honored to host some of the most prestigious research endeavors currently being made in physics, biology and natural science.
The research department at NRU currently hosts the following projects:
037 Applications of number theory in pattern analysis
- Dr. Lou Ann Green, Principal Investigator
Most humans find that recognizing objects is an obvious and simple process. Utilizing current techniques in edge detection, pattern recognition, and statistical analysis, we hope to improved computer recognition beyond the hype.
041 Next generation materials for a zero gravity environment
- Aaron Bejarano, Principal Investigator
Building on research funded by Rolls-Royce for their ADAM (Advanced Aero-Engine Materials) project, we are testing numerous materials for use in high temperature turbine materials, lightweight magnetic and electrical technologies, advanced composites, advanced joining techniques and innovative powder material processes.
066 Quantum Cryptography
- Harold Stennis, Principal Investigator
Quantum information processing is a new emergent field. Its nature makes it a project that supercedes traditional assumptions regarding size and limits . It combines questions of national security with questions of fundamental science.
075 Pecos Pueblo Excavation
- F. John Mastai, Principal Investigator
Excavation of the Pecos Pueblo mission site is proceeding as planned. We have found yet another set of rooms below the original excavation. Pecos Pueblo was occupied from the mid fourteenth century until the 1830s. It is believed that this site will yield much earlier artifacts as we dig deeper into the strata.
092 Theoretical Applications of Quantum Fluctuations - Monitoring and Exploiting the Movement of Quantal Data Over Distance
- Dr. Kristoff Zeladzny, Principal Investigator
Using measurable changes in the space/time continuum, we hope to enable the instantaneous projection of data over large distances.
-----------------------
More importantly, there is a login / password box which might get us access to Zeladzny's work on project number 092 (if we can find the username and password). Perhaps Jake's?

I just guessed. We have a ton of machines at work that we call by their short names (beta, survey, oscar, kermit, beaker, etc.), but can be accessed by their fully qualified names (beta.mycompany.com, survey.mycompany.com, etc.) There was a similar setup at the college I went to. I just applied that to "research is down," thinking it might be a publicly accessible machine.

Re: Trouble Tickets
No, that isn't. In fact, that is the first thing I tried when I saw that message from Jake.
I guess it was down!

Research log in Attempted to use the visitor's id we recently received on the Research page.
Which redirected to http://research.nru.us/login.php
Which said:
Quote:
Login accepted. Redirecting to Visitor's login
With visitor's login a link. This page redirects to:
http://research.nru.us/main.php but then redirects to ... /loginfail.php
Got the similar wording and redirects on Jake's (jstarkey) badge number.
Addie said the number on Jake's badge starts with the project number 092, so we need to figure out what we are doing wrong

Using the project number 092 will give you a page with the link "Login accepted. Redirecting to (user)'s login", and user can be anything you put in there. It then passes values of the username and password on to main.php through a cookie, and that dumps us out.
I suspect we need to find a valid combonation of usernames and passwords to start us out.
Also, once you go through that process to get your cookie set, http://research.nru.us/index.php will show you as loged in, even if you can't access main.php.

EDIT: The hotmail account comes from here:

Have tried easy name passwords, but no luck as yet...
EDIT (2): Hope this is in game, and not someone playing, otherwise this will look pretty stupid!!!

I would guess at first glance that that person is out of game. The netblock is a large IP block for an ISP in Canada, and the time doesn't coincide with anything. They are using a hotmail address, while the game has been using yahoo addresses previously. The User Agent is also different from Jakes.

There are some interesting stories listed that might be worthwhile reading (/me singing "Library Trip! Library Trip! Yay!), regardless if the Trouble ticket comes from an in-game or out of game source...
Quote:
"The Ethical Equations", a sly, semi-serious exploration of patterns of human conduct (Astounding Science Fiction in 1945):
Quote:
The Ethical Equations, of course, link conduct with probability, and give mathematical proof that certain patterns of conduct increase the probability of certain kinds of coincidences, But nobody ever expected them to have any really practical effect. Elucidation of the laws of chance did not stop gambling, though it did make life insurance practical. The Ethical Equations weren't expected to be even as useful as that. ...
Sidewise in Time" appeared in Astounding Stories (not yet the Campbell-edited Astounding Science Fiction) in 1934, and is one of the true essentials in this collection. "Sidewise in Time" is a pioneering study in alternate histories, but not world-lines side-by-side as developed thoroughly in the later vision of Piper's Paratime. Here we stumble through historical chaos, spacetime become unstable with chunks of time being shuffled and juxtaposed in earthquake-like timeslips. A great adventure.
"The Fourth-Dimensional Demonstrator" (Astounding Stories, 1935) is a hilarious little classic on the nexus where time-travel turns into duplication.
