Trail blazing and Guideposts

One of the big problems I had with Change Agents: Out of Control was the lack of a comprehensive trail. One was started (IIRC) but it wasn't maintained and I got quickly lost. With over 24 sites planned for this game, I think maintaining a trail/guide is more than one person can do alone, especially given that there are so many games running and people's attention may be somewhat dispersed. I think we can come up with a way to maintain a trail and guide in the unfiction system, but we need volunteers to work on keeping it up-to-date.

If people will allow me to take issue with one of the PM's comments in his interview where he seemed to dis trailmakers...Yes, it is *critical* to have a well-prepared, well-written story, it is equally critical to have and maintain a thorough and comprehensive trail and guide. It isn't enough to start the game well, the game has to be made accessible to late-comers and kept manageable for players from the onset. What I like about having this kind of notice that a game is coming, is that we can do some prep work and get ready for it.

I'd also like to see quicklinks maintained for the game...they are extremely helpful for multiple site games.

I really want to see this game succeed...it's a great premise, has an experienced and talented and devoted PM and is just what we need right now.

The idea has been tossed about in the past that certain people take on the assignment of 'owning' individual/multiple sites. By owning, I mean knowing everything about the site inside and out, archiving it, checking it for updates, etc. What do people feel about this? It might come in handy in this game.

Trails and Guideposts

Tien:
I'm thrilled that you and so many others are excited about the upcoming Chasing The Wish project. And I'm sorry if you (or anyone else) took offense at my comment about making Guides, Trails, etc. It wasn't meant as a criticism of anyone doing that - like you pointed out, comprehensive guides, trails, site lists, etc - are critical to making a game accessible to latecomers as well as helping players keep track of what's been found. In fact, one of my biggest disappointments in doing the CAOOC game was that a running guide was never successfully implemented, by either me or any of the players. I was really hoping that some of the players were going to take this on themselves but when it didn't happen, I tried to do one on my own but just couldn't keep up with it and do all the content too. In my opinion, it was one of the biggest flaws of the game. So I applaud and appreciate your initiative to organize this area for the upcoming game. And, believe me, there's going to be plenty to keep track of. I guarantee you that I and the other PMs are working hard to make CTW better than anything I've done before and different than anything that's been done in this genre.
So again, sorry if you took offense about the Guidemaker comment. The comment is really a reference to an incident that happened at the beginning of CAOOC, when a fairly well-known individual in the ARG world posted a comment about an early e-mail from the game. He had no knowledge of anything about the game but read the e-mail someone had posted and took it and critiqued it totally out of context, concluding by saying something like "This is a game I wouldn't play." Maybe I'm giving him too much credit but I believe his comments kept some potential players from trying the game while it was just beginning. And what pissed me off was that this person had never been involved in creating an immersive game or anything like it, but was a self-appointed expert because he did a guide for a previous game. And while I don't begrudge anyone their opinion or right to voice it in ARG-related forums, I also think people who may have some influence with the community need to be careful about judging and criticizing games without actually trying them. The last thing you want if you truly care about this genre is to discourage the next up and coming genius out there who may just astound you with something he (or she) creates. And that's exaclty what that person's comments did, discourage me almost to the point of ending CAOOC weeks after it began. I feel vindicated by by the results however and merely meant my comment as words of advice to future PMs, not to be discouraged by anyone else's uneducated criticisms.
Now, back to work.

Thank you for the explanation. I shouldn't have taken it personally...my bad. I vaguely recall that post...it didn't influence me in the least. I like to make up my own mind. But you're right about posts discouraging people. I posted something scathing about 8March2003, but I doubt anyone will let it influence them either. Opinions can be dangerous, it's true.

I'm not convinced that those of us who haven't been PMs are totally ignorant about the amount of work, dedication, stress, money, etc. that goes into producing a quality product. We've been lucky enough to get to know the Lockjaw PMs and they've done quite a lot to educate us about how difficult and rewarding the whole process is.

I have nothing but admiration for your work and am thoroughly looking forward to your next campaign.

Hello everyone! Laughing I just joined here recently, and have been going thru all of the posts -- just saw this one from Tien. I really do think this is such a good idea! I don't see any responses to it, except for the one. I would like to see this happen, and am willing to do my part. Anyone else??

Regards,
**Alcyone**

that link acted very oddly for me. it was complaining that i didn't have cookies enabled (which i do) and i was about to give up before going to the Y! files and looking for it. After I viewed it from there, it let me in without a problem. I don't understand the logic behind that, but I'm sure there's some reason behind it all. So, if anyone else has the problem, go to the group directly to get it: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wishchasers/files/WEBSITES

I've also set up some quicklinks for CTW. It's empty now, but with the rumored 2 dozen sites, they'll come in handy. I'll try my best to keep them updated and will do something like what steve did with the JB/LJ quicklinks (having the sites and then deep links). Anyway, you can get find your flavor (mozilla or IE) at: http://www.mirlandano.com/ctwql.html

Hello

I am new to this genre but I think that it is a wonderful idea to keep track of things. It is so logical.
There ws a great person (HEY KEN) on Noahboddy that did a great job in keeping track of important topics, websites and puzzles. It was very helpful and important..
I will be glad to help!!!!!
