Coyote Dispatch puzzles

Does anyone else think the puzzles in the Coyote Dispatch contain clues other than the quotations that are the answers given by working out the puzzle?

I note that the clues in the wordsearch from puzzle, Dec. 8, deals with Dante's Divine Comedy: the Inferno and the quote is also from there.

I had forgotten that in the poem, souls are ferried by Charon across the River Acheron into Hell.

Also, the clues are not lined up properly on the page.

Could this be a message?

ANything is possible and we have seen puzzles in the most unlikely formats. Put something together for us to look at.

Old puzzles

I have the current puzzle and the cryptogram from a previous edition of the Coyote Digest. I know there was a crossword -which I have tried to find. Anyone have it, and were there "only" these three puzzles?

Thanks.

PS I still need Sin's answers

I didn't see anyone take a crack at the latest puzzle, dated 12/14

Here's the answers to the clues:

NIHILISTIC
RATIONALISM
DOWNTRODDEN
SUBLIME
PIANO KEY (Not positive about this one)
TOOTHACHE
SAINT PETERSBURG
BEAUTIFUL
PROSTITUTE

The filled in grid is:

LCCBWSLMNGGTCBPKHVSPCOS
OCKBLCASMCWFKCANBHESN

I also attached the filled-in puzzle.

Someone smarter can take it from here Smile

Heh, I've been worrying on the cryptogram for a couple of hours. There's a good applet at http://www.esg.montana.edu/meg/consbio/cryptogram/crypto.html for working on cryptograms, btw.

Thanks for posting these, Bagsbee!

Dang. I'm usually good at acrostics and crossword puzzles, but to say that these clues and their answers (not to mention the grid itself) are strange is putting it mildly. (Note: I don't disagree with the answers you got, Bagsbee ... I'm questioning the puzzle itself!)

"Something man is like" = PIANO KEY - Huh? Man is like a piano key? Okaaaaay, maybe if you're Stevie Wonder/Paul McCartney and you're singing about Ebony & Ivory... Otherwise, I'm not clear on what this means.

"Something to enjoy" = TOOTHACHE - Huh again? Except for Bill Murray's character in "Little Shop of Horrors," I know of no one who enjoys a toothache!

I'm not feelin' the "Somewhere to be/theoretically speaking" = SAINT PETERSBURG either. Why is SP only a theoretical destination?

Also, why is that "V" already filled in for us? Why not just create another puzzle clue leading to a word with a "V" in it?

I feel so dumb. Sad

Edited because I'm even dumber than I thought, and misidentified the person who posted the answers.

Notes from the underground

Trhyne noted that all of these quotes relate to Dostoyesky (sp) Notes from the Underground. Now they make sense. Possibly the V refers to the Note the quote or quote may be from? they are numbered with roman numerals.

Hidden NOTES?

On rose’s suggestion, to take a closer look at the CD puzzles, here’s how the Dostoevsky quote substitution stacks up. The first column of letters are the decoded ones, the second column is the substitution letter used in the puzzle.
1 A N 14
2 B O 15
3 C T 20
4 D E 5
5 E S 19
6 F F 6
7 G *
8 H M 13
9 I H 8
10 J *
11 K *
12 L G 7
13 M A 1
14 N B 2
15 O C 3
16 P *
17 Q *
18 R K 11
19 S L 12
20 T P 16
21 U *
22 V V 22
23 W W 23
24 X *
25 Y *
26 Z *

The letters F V W represent themselves…their #’s are 6.22.23
But more interesting, is that the first five letters, spell NOTES.
Could this be part of a message hidden within the puzzle’s construction? Or just another example of the amazing things to be found, when one looks hard enough, that have absolutely nothing to do with anything. Rolling Eyes

Driz, I do think it means something, perhaps there is something in the notes in the research server that we are missing/overlooking.

Jake saw/found something he didn't like and left. HCRD has/had been pressuring Prof. Z to allow humans to be sent back. We must be missing something somewhere along the way.

That's actualy a really good idea. Sometimes you use a phrase to generate a pad. It's a comon method to key substitution ciphers, the problem is later in the alphabet the letters match up. This is consistant with that method, look at "MNO", where it starts to plug in the "unused" letters, "ABC". After that the alphabet should be sequential. The important thing to remember is that if you get the same letter twice in your phrase, you drop the second instance. So I took your start and made some educated guesses at what the key could be.

Quote:
1 A N
2 B O
3 C T
4 D E
5 E S
6 F F
7 G * R? (guess)
8 H M
9 I H
10 J * D? I? J? Q? U?
11 K * D? I? J? Q? U?
12 L G
13 M A
14 N B
15 O C
16 P * D E F G H I
17 Q * E F G H I J
18 R K
19 S L
20 T P
21 U * Q R S T U
22 V V
23 W W
24 X X?
25 Y Y?
26 Z Z?

R made sence for the G, just because that spells out "Notes from". Then, we have a word that begins in H and ends in G. There are no likely canadates for 5 letter words like that, but if you consider 6 letter words, one pops out as likely, "Hiding". That also satisfies the requirements for the key generation, and forms a nice and neat little cipher alphabet.

"Notes from hiding"? Perhaps...Then again, "hering" fits too, as in red. Wink Can anyone find any better ones? Remeber, you can use these letters:

Code:
D E F H I J M N O Q R S T
an unlimited number of times in between the letters H and G. Also, I am not 100% sure that the second word is "from".

My mom used to write cryptograms. She would always put in an easter egg with some clue to the content of the quote. I wonder if this was just one of those things.

puzzle construction phrase

Thanks, AnthraX101, for that explanation.
So, I'm guessing the phrase used to generate the letter substitutions is Notes from the Underground (DOH!)and the list would look like this.

1 A N
2 B O
3 C T
4 D E
5 E S
6 F F
7 G R
8 H M
9 I H
10 J U
11 K D
12 L G_______
13 M A
14 N B
15 O C
16 P I
17 Q J
18 R K
19 S L
20 T P
21 U Q
22 V V
23 W W
24 X X
25 Y Y
26 Z Z
So, no hidden notes here. Very Happy

Blah, I guess so, that makes the most sense. I didn't think of that because the "official" name is "Notes from Underground" Smile
