Elonka Code v1.0

Elonka dropped by #unfiction this morning and gave us a link to her own code challenge. The code can be found at http://members.aol.com/elonka/elonkacode1.txt, and a list of those who've solved it already is at http://elonka.com/codesolvers.html. Also check out Elonka's PhreakNIC tutorial for tips on how to solve the Elonka code.

The first bit looked familiar so I opened up my uNF sidebar and had at it. Here's what I got:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Good start! This code is meant to be solved. This section used a system called rot-13. The next will be hexadecimal ASCII encoding. Good luck!--

Your turn. Wink

Whew! Next part is decrypted as follows:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The PGP message is not meant to be opened.
But it does contain the password.
Hint: "(0,0)=h" 43,5 0,5 41,2 23,5 25,6 50,2 37,2 49,4 18,2 35,1 20,6 11,3 6,7 55,0 55,6 40,1 24,7

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The next part is rot-13 encoded and reads as follows: [-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----]

I went ahead and ROT-13'd the whole thing just to see what I could see.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The PGP encoded section is surrounded by ROT13 beginning and ending markers: [-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----] and [-----END PGP MESSAGE-----]. The text between the markers is (original unROT'ed):
[uDPZN6D105sl0BzENDDNvgavgisLAfqI9fwUwmxMf

PhBh+iE1w99GVPWGk2ORjWDSqDIl4][Iuu0JgN=][=Bu+I]

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
After the PGP section, there is a small bit which again ROT13'd says: table`!"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@AB
CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_begin 600 UUHINT.TXT

I'm not sure about the stuff between "table" and "begin" (obfuscation?) but the begin 600 UUHINT.TXT says to me, uuencoded file attachment. There is an "end size 338" marker where that attachment probably finishes. The text between these markers is (original unROT'ed):
Z3SRP92!
T;IRA9E$-"@G*3S5K="C@>6]H(&LR960@=&\@<'5Y;"!N(&HR<J-NZ9I4
@;J5G(&]S(&%A(&RZ86=R(&%G(&HL('!R<T-B;S%Y('-V=&4Y(&%G(`G*

=S4@=&\@9I5G(&9E;IG@796DF97=U97)R(&RA('1U:7,@8I]Q92LH`

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The final portion after "end size 338" says: TheElonkaCodeTheElonkaCodeTheElonkaCodeTheElonkaC

Another part is cracked.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The UU code decodes to:

Nice going!

Next, you need to pull a message out of an image at my personal site, at
http://members.aol.com/elonka

Look for the picture next to the phrase, "Why are icebergs blue?"

The stego utility I used was s-tools4. The encryption type is Triple DES.

The password, you'll have to get from elsewhere in this code.

The part after that (in progress):

Solved some more Smile

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The PGP code and the HEX pairs work together. Break the PGP code into the correct formating by making each group of bracketed text a new line. The first number of the hex pair is the column, and the second is the row (starting with 0 on both so that 0,0 is the top left h and ignoring the brackets and begin/end PGP lines).
Finding the letters for the pairs in the code thusly yields:
There/is/no/spoon
Which works as the (case sensitive) password for destegging the image from my above link with s-tools4 (a link to which can be found in the PhreakNIC code tutorial) and Triple DES encyrption.

This reveals a txt file with the following:

Great job moa! Translation:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The text is a spiral from the center outwards, clockwise:

If you can read this then that means you
finished the code. (period)

Congratulations. (period)

To announce your win please post a message
to the stl2600 mailing list with
the phrase Fazolis Rules in binary at the
bottom of the message. (period)

instructions on joining the list are at
http://www.wearehope.com/stl2600. (all punctuation is spelled out)

Elonka Code

Nicely done! I knew you folks would be fast. Both your names are now on the "Official Solvers" page.

For your next trick... Has this community ever turned its group mind to the Kryptos sculpture? I'd be interested in seeing a thread on that.

Congrats again,

Elonka :)

Only partially. There's a 97 character section at the end that is undeciphered, and I understand there's at least one more layer to the final solve after the initial plaintext portions are recovered.
