Apologies if I'm asking something embarrassingly obvious but I'm feeling very dim this morning. How did you get from the letters in the grid to that particular line of text... and how does that line solve the puzzle?

Please humour the newbie...

That isn't a bad question, the code is hard for me to figure out. Even with the answer working backwards, I can't figure out what key they used to make the code to start with! This is a pretty famous line from the book, but not the most famous.

The cipher is simple substitution, no key required. I am assuming that after figuring out the clues pointed to Notes from the Underground it was only a matter of searching it for things that fit.

Example: The Cryptoquote starts with LCCB..... therefore it is reasonable to assume you must look for instances of "OO" ..."EE"...."SS"...."TT"....etc. in the passages and go from there. (At least that's how I would have done it).

Lurker asked...

Well, for one thing…it fits. heh
But I think it also works with Dostoevsky’s concepts
to answer this:
"Somehow planning in the future for the past:"
Of course, I could be wrong.

WARNING: BORING EXPLAINATION OF A THOUGHT PROCESS AHEAD
As Guest wrote "The cipher is simple substitution", which I also assumed, since the puzzle appears in a local newspaper.
Since this cryptoquote is one continuous string of letters, I used this site
http://members.singlepoint.net/sbryce/cryptograms/index.htm
It lets you try different combinations of letters, when a simple cryptocracker won’t do the job. It also has some nice features like frequency, double letters, and digraphs.
I plugged in the letters from the grid, as posted by bagsbee, into that site. (Thanks, bagsbee Smile ) And tried to solve the thing with no luck.

Googling for Dostoevsky Notes from the Underground, (Thanks Trhyne and rose for posting that Smile ) gave me the site with the text. CTRL f came in very handy to seek out word guesses, from within the text.

Not knowing where the word breaks were, I went looking for patterns in that string of letters, particularly the double letters at the start of the string.
But what words to use?… I looked to the puzzle for clues.
"Making all his nowhere plans for somebody"
Is similar to lyrics from Fool on the Hill by The Beatles
Trying fool for the first word in the string and using CTRL f on the text didn’t pan out, neither did many other guesses of mine. Until “soon” hit pay dirt! Man, I love that rush!

So, lurker, to answer your question as to how: with online tools, pattern seeking, Google, wild guesses, and perseverance; “I get by with a little help from my friends” Wink

Not at all. Thanks drizjr for the links and tips. I am slowly learning to think laterally - and upside down, backwards, in pictures etc...

If you have IE (it's a microsoft skewed toy), I can recommend the google toolbar which lives below your address bar - http://toolbar.google.com - it has a built-in search feature to highlight all your search words in a page. You can also search from this toolbar without having to go to the google homepage first.
