CHAT: Yahoo Games chat with Caretaker and Jake

Unfortunately there is no copy and paste from Yahoo Games chat, and the backscroll is only limited. I grabbed what I could with screenshots and combined them into big images. Whoever wants to transcribe is more than welcome to do so!

At the beginning, Caretaker told Jake that anomalies were spotted by John in the lab computer records, which is where we come in to the attached files.

This is the chess game they played:

shift: Clever. But he still hasn't beaten me.
Shift: Okay so I hopped.
caretaker: I want to know why.
Shift: New Orleans looked a lot different
Shift: It wasn't hard to blend in like I thought it would.
Caretaker: Let's cut to the chase.
Caretaker: I think the project at NRU has been subverted.
Shift: Fine
Caretaker: I think you are in a position to help me prove it.
Shift: I found something in the logs.
Shift: It shouldn't have been there but it was.
Shift: I checked as many different ways as I could.
Shift: But none of them were concrete.
Caretaker: If you keep your wits, and your head, John can you get back in to research.
Shift: I can. Get me in soon though I'm hoping the case against me will get dropped if I
can find something to push back against whoever did this to me.
Caretaker: Watch your mail.
Caretaker has left the table.
Shift: I hate running around blind.
Shift: Dammit.
Magesteff: always_leaves_fast.
Shift: It's annoying isn't it?
Vraal: awful
Magesteff: sometimes, yes
Austin_trill: How are you otherwise, Shift?
Konamouse: Too much secret training?
Konamouse: Hi Shift.
Shift: This is like the misfits of science with all these names.
Exaxoro: lol
Cemgate has left the table
Konamouse: Aren't we misfits?
Katya2032 has left the table
Austin_trill: The island of misfit science
Sbrose711: We missed you shift
Konamouse: have you gotten any takers on those diamondbacks tickets yet?
Sbrose: can we help you
frodo1903 has left the table
Shift: research assistant doesn't pay the bills like it used to.
Austin_trill: You know anything about a lost NRU access pass?
Vraal: Well Caretaker has asked us to help him, which in turn means helping you.
It's probably that some anonymity will be useful to that end. But is there anything
we can do to make you feel more secure regarding all this?
Konamouse: yup, been there (research), done that (no pay, just a grade).
Konamouse: Feel free to check my profile.
Vision42x23 has left the table
Vraal has left the table
Shift: I have no idea why you want to help me. I'm up to my neck in problems.
Vraal has joine the table
Sbrose: btw, congrats on the baby
Vraal: sorry
Shift: The baby... don't remind me.
Sbrose: why?
Caretaker010101 has joined the table
Austin_trill: wb Caretaker
Shift: It's amazing. but how am I going to raise a child from a prison cell?
Caretaker: Jake?
Konamouse: However, usually students income qualify's the mom in a WIC program
(supplement your food bill)
Shift: Yes CT?
Caretaker: Jown says follow the money
Frodo 1903 has joined the table
Sbrose: We know you are innocent
Konamouse: First bank of Catalina.
Shift: Point me at the money.
Shift: I'm not an accountant dammit!
Magesteff: Forget_something_Caretaker.
Shift: First Bank?
Austin_trill: www.catalinafirst.com
Shift: What can I find there?
Konamouse: But can you log into it?
Konamouse: Or can John figure out how to hack into it?
Shift: Thanks trill I've got the URL. I've got an account there.
Shift: All NRU employees checks come from there.
Konamouse: Then you can log into your account.
Konamouse: maybe a back door from there can check out other accounts.
Konamouse: like Craig Becker???
Austin_trill: That's interesting, wonder what else might be found there.
Konamouse: Who else working at NRU might be suspect?
Caretaker: At least some of the money coming through there looks funny.
Shift: Becker, me, Kris, Theresa, all the guards, you name it.
Austin_trill: Shift or CT, do either of you know a login we might be able to use to
acces the bank?
Konamouse: Theresa?
Shift: Theresa is medical staff. She runs checks through anyone in the program.
Shift: I wrote in a status check for all agents to be checked on returns for disconnects.
Konamouse: Does she keep records on the computer?
Caretaker: I have a buddy at the GAO. He did some digging for me.
Austin_trill: Disconnects?
Shift: CT, what did he say?
Caretaker: About 40% of NRU's budget comes from standard budget items.
Shift: Ok.
Shift: Where's the 60 come from?
Caretaker: The rest? He's not sure, but he was told to back off when he started digging
around on my behalf
Shift: Disconnects are cellular damage directly related to atmospheric interference
and nutrino collision within the quantum field.
Caretaker: My suspicion is that it comes from a slush fund.
Shift: Thanks for telling me. Can you think of anything else?
Konamouse: Does Dr. Theresa keep any medical records online?
geore_vancen has joined.
Sbrose: That is a pretty big slush fund
Shift: Konamouse.. if she did I wouldn't have access to them.
Sbrose: did you read the report of the agent who went back to the UN?
Caretaker: also, the level of activity with the Fed jumped substancially last November
Caretaker: Someone is making significant deposits
Shift: CT who's got the slush funds that big? .. oh..
george_vancen left
Shift: Meg's due home from christmas shopping
Caretaker: ok
Shift: She says Walmart's easier to shop this time of night.
Sbrose: The fed? You mean the Federal ReserveBank?
Shift: I wouldn't go there ever.
Shift: I'm going back to being careful. Yes I'll watch my mail. Just don't leave me
dangling too much longer.
Konamouse: If someone went back in time and invested in Microsoft, say in 1978...
Shift: Damnit. Door.
Shift has left the table
Konamouse: they would be a zillionaire now.
Caretaker: Damn
Caretaker has left table.
Konamouse: Damn.
Austin_trill: Or Volksawagen in 1930
Austin_trill: Or IBM, etc
Sbrose: So now what do we do?
Konamouse: Nothing German
Vision42x23 has joined.
Konamouse: I'll hang out for another min or so.
Konamouse: I'm the host, so I can kick out riffraff.

Other information

As I remember, the beginning of the conversation had some talk between Caretaker and Jake about how a lot of "tripwires" that John had set off were going off at NRU. It seems that large amount of data are being transferred at late hours when no one is there and the parking lot is empty. (There may also have been discussion about the amount of power being used.) This leads into part one above with the discussion of how Caretaker knows what the "baselines" are.

I think there was one initial comment when Jake asks Caretaker what he should do and Caretaker says "Hark" , which struck me as odd only because I have never actually heard anyone use it in a conversation.

Also, there was some discussion of the legal case against Jake, his lawyer's request for information has resulted in massive document production going on in the administration building.

One question : Jake is playing Caretaker, who is relating John's moves. Jake says "I can't believe that I am losing to a rug." - what does that mean?

FYI- for those who don't follow baseball, to "ride the pine" means to wait on the bench waiting your possible use as a substitute player.

An idea occurs to me that Jake was recruited by Caretaker along time ago as a source about the project. Caretaker had to be following Turgenov/ Dr.Z's progress and wanted an inside source. So Jake was an inside undercover informant, which may be why he knew the hop protocal was approved, but Dr. Z did not. Jake may not trust Caretaker completely now because he came back and was arrested.

I think that Jake lied when he said he didn't know who posted his bond.. He may have been trying to see if Caretaker would admit to doing it or if Caretaker would discuss it.

Unless that is specifically referencing a protocol they had set up in the past. Such as "sacrifice" being a code word for wanting contact. Or it is a clue to another website/file we need to locate (maybe in the purge/archives? John has access to a computer now.)

I think it is a degrogatory term for "someone I normally walk all over like a rug." Jake is upset and distracted. It is affecting his game. (or is could be a clue to a website.... Laughing )

Thanks, don't follow many sports, so I didn't understand that one

Interesting that Kat put it in the Research files after the comments by Prof. Z, that protocol had not been set.

Or Jake could be as much in the dark as we are. It could be that the same people that caused him to be arrested also posted his bond "to see which way he jumps," who he goes to for assistance, etc. I would expect his home and classroms to be bugged and other listening and tracking devices in use as well.

Caretaker also came back to say "follow the money." Looks like First Bank of Catalina is about to become active. We should be looking for messages where ever we can.
