I think that SMH is over--after all, legally, we the players only had to answer eight puzzles (eight days) to get our share of the prize.

However, it's clearly setting up for a sequel. BTW, if you guys do a sequel involving Sonia... I will play. Smile

Yes, it was easy. Yes, it had a few bugs. But in the end, it was a fun diversion with an interesting story--and all the winners got a little prize for their efforts. In the end, I liked this game, and I had fun with it. Smile

Thanks to Court TV, Applebees, and--oh, that other company that never got any advertising. Wink

Don't you worry none about Sonia ...

Sonia picked up the briefcase w/ the money that Grant left at the crime scene and bounced. She's half-way to Europe to sip champagne on the Eiffel Tower at sundown.

Toast to Applebees, Court TV, Grant and the Goodis family!! Very Happy

I saw a website, behind the buzz
that people were saying they got bad press, and they talked about this

website. I posted on it in defense of Deep Focus and AplleBee's. They went into depth about the players on this board, I was sad at how they felt. I told them that alot of people here had a good time and liked the game. But the press only seems to want to exploit the negative. Oh well. maybe I need to trott off somewhere far away and sip in a bottle of champagne lol. I want them to do it again too Laughing

I think both sides have valid points here.

On one hand, everyone who played got a week of free entertainment, and it must have been fun somehow, or most people would not have continued to play.

On the other hand, if people invested a lot of time and energy into the game because it started out cool, but feel, at the end, like their investment was wasted, then that is a valid reason to be upset.

As someone who's both been an active player and worked on the other side of the curtain, and who frequently writes about and reports on the genre, I feel that the biggest obligation you have to your players as a designer is to do your best to set their expectations correctly. That can be difficult -- sometimes you think you've done a good job of conveying some sense of what the game is going to be like ("this is going to be an epic adventure," or "this is going to be a light puzzle trail"), and people still get different ideas about it and end up disappointed or angry or feeling like you promised something you didn't deliver.

But for those who are disappointed and are interested in delivering constructive criticism (not that I have any knowledge of whether the Deep Focus people are reading this thread, but it's an interesting conversation nonetheless) -- what were you expecting, and why were you expecting it, and how were your expectations not met?

Ok...

I expected the puzzles to be more difficult, especially towards the end, as was stated by the SMH official rules, puzzles were to get increasingly difficult each day. When they didn't, I was disappointed. It seemed that all the answers took only a few minutes to solve, including the last questions - identity of person responsible, location of Andrew. I was surprised by all the controversy and confusion regarding the last days answers. However, even though the puzzles were simple and almost elementary, I did enjoy answering them and getting my first few minutes of ARG gaming. Until now I have never known they even existed. I only found this game because it was heavily advertised on the web - which I am ADDICTED to. I then found this site during my searching out clues for SMH. Now that I am aware, and VERY interested I am going to seek out new ARGs to get involved in. So, although I was initially disappointed in SMHs puzzles, I am not disappointed in discovering a new gaming experience. Overall it wasn't a bad idea to play and keep playing.

Sonia's Disappearance
Expectations

Part of my disappointment in the game lies within my own assumptions. After finishing POTC3 - I was looking for puzzles to mentally challenge me. The PM's of SMH promised "increasing difficulty" as the week progressed - but made no indication of where the "difficulty" level would start. (That was MY assumption!!) I do feel that part of the disappointment lies with the PM's, they did not protect their site from the beginning and the "changes" made in mid-play were obvious and amateurish = even the last day's post had to be ammended AFTER it was on-site. I also feel that those in charge either didn't wish to employ experienced game developers or the developers underestimated the average gamers skills.

All in all - I was disappointed in the game. WOULD I PLAY AGAIN? - Yes.
Should they have a continuation - I believe they would make necessary adjustments, review materials prior to game onset, AND SECURE THEIR SITES!!!

As for marketing - regardless which side of the fence you sat on - you definitely used the names "Applebee's", "Court TV", and "Susuki". So the advertising measures would receive a B+.

The money = this was clearly stated that a TOTAL of $25,000 would be given out. regardless of the winners. I think the idea of posting angry or irratated statements because we were "sharing" information is ridiculus. If they were upset - WHY WERE THEY ON, AND USING, A "SHARING" SITE TO BEGIN WITH???

Thanks to the moderators and site developers - We definitely have a great community here!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

As I believe has been stated elsewhere, if you enjoy solving puzzles with a community, you may want to take a look at the puzzle trails in our Timewasters forum. A lot of them have already been completed, but there's no reason why you guys can't have a go at them as a group.

Hi mntndust, the behind the buzz post is from me. The audience for that blog (don't think I'm quite press yet!) is marketers and I was trying to pick up lessons to be learnt for companies that try this in the future. I love ARGs, I have great fun playing them, but from a corporate perspective there were a lot of problems with this and a lot of lessons - primarily, use someone experienced in the genre otherwise things can easily go wrong. Also never underestimate your audience and the different groups that can play it. The reason ARGs can be such a good way of marketing is that they are fun - it's not a one way message but the customer gets something out of it as well. (unlike a lot of advertising, which is just blast one way)

And if they are going to do a part 2, I'll be there playing as well. But also preying they fix the bugs this time

Thanks for your comment, and I guess the other comments from people who came there from this forum.

Hi chelec,

I thought it was a good post (cropped up in one of my Google Alerts) that sort of outlined the need for designers to be prepared to deal with UF; for that matter, it doesn't have to be UF -- any community can morph, in a flash, into a Borg-like unstoppable information-seeking collective if presented with the incentive to do so. (See also the experiences of the Lonelygirl15 creators.) I don't think companies should be designing with us as their sole target audience, but it's not that hard to find out that we're out there and likely to take an interest in anything ARG-like, and to understand the potential consequences of that attention. (And, as I said elsewhere, to at least consider how to set the audience's expectations correctly.)

I'm curious as to what you thought about the confusion about whether it was real and whether they did enough to demonstrate that it wasn't -- you touch on other people's reactions in your post, but don't offer an opinion of your own.

Anyway, if you are interested, we discussed that particular aspect (and the premature discovery of a lot of the content) in the ARG Netcast and will probably be doing a post-game discussion at some point, so we'd love it if you'd call in and offer your thoughts (I was planning to discuss your post if we end up talking about SMH for the next one). Smile

where is she? Suzuki v. Applebee's
if there is a sequel, where will it go?

Applebee's got top billing in this game, Suzuki was pretty low key. Maybe the secret game is submitting the answer to where Sonia is. The people that submit the correct answer win a brand new Suzuki.

I've been sending email all day long to the people running the contest so i can win my new Suzuki. So far, i've yet to be notified when the will be sending it to me.

If i dont hear back from them soon, I will only assume that the "next next" part of the contest is finding a dealership, leaving a note that said "i won", and taking my new Suzuki in the middle of the night. I'm having trouble with the details on that, but it's only a game ya know?

Hi Phaedra - you're right, I didn't necessarily put my own opinion about that reaction and you've got me thinking I should do an additional post about that. Not having seen the tv ads nor the online ads before they changed, I was reluctant to comment, but i've got some opinions that I've write up.

I'm completely surprised at that reaction - the framing of everything that I saw was as a commercial effort, not any way real, especially when you compare this to other games which are not 'professional'. It's the mass media element and the extension to a wider audience that through things here. Kidnappings are usually on the news or have credits at the end of the hour, so this was outside the frame of reference I guess.

And i'd love to chime in on the ARGNetcast about it - Pm in about when (either here or through the blog details)

Thoughts on SMH and where Sonia is

This game was my first ARG, but I don't intend it to be my last. As a matter of fact, this is my first post as a member. I liked the game over all. For a newbie, I think it was a good way to get my feet wet, yet not be overwhelmed. Most of the things that frustrated experienced gamers were over my head, so they weren't a problem. (Like 'source code'?!) However, I have been reading the tutorials and now not only know what source code is, I know how to find it.... hey, you have to start somewhere.

I hope they do a sequel with Sonia. Now that they have gotten some experience themselves, there should be fewer glitches and problems. I am hoping to find a fairly simple puzzle-type game to try. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.
