This makes the weirdness on Reggie's blog, of course, all the more unusual. Why should the change in the time-stream (or the cover-up, whatever) make Meg's blog change so subtlely, and Reggie's so radically? Heck if I know.

Remember Reggie was heavily drugged by agents unknown in order to induce some state resembling schizophrenia. His previous stream-of-consciousness posting style was more that of someone with a mental illness (or drug problem). The new posts show clear thinking and less rambling.

I can honestly say I have no idea what's going on as far as the changes go. Each theory sounds equally good to me - coverup and time travel. Several authors bypass the "paradox" of time travel by positing that a branching timeline is created for each change made in time. Therefore the badges could still exist in our world, but we're glimpsing into Meg and Reggie's new world where there never were any badges.

Another theory to consider is brainwashing. What if Meg and Reggie were drugged and reprogrammed to believe the headache story (for Reggie) and accident story (for Meg)? Remember, we haven't heard from either of them for a couple of weeks. Plenty of time for black ops to gather them up and scramble their memories.

That's true. Consider this entry from Reggie, post-change:
Quote:
is the wort supposed to make you paranoid? i don't remember that being a side effect. still freaky how everything seems a little bit off these days. woke up with another migraine. definitely not a hangover this time.

The "wort" he refers to, almost certainly, is St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), an herbal remedy used to treat mild to moderate depression. So maybe Reggie's 'cover story' is he was depressed, hospitalized, and put on antidepressants (incl. St. John's wort), which is why he's been feeling out of it.

So Meg's feeling bad about her husband's 'car accident,' Reggie is recovering from his 'depression,' and meanwhile the government gets to keep time traveling--which is (most likely) their goal, and is the best argument for a cover-up/brainwash rather than messing about with the time stream. Because if the guys in the black helicopters keep NRU from ever existing, then no one gets to play with the time machine.

On the one hand it makes sense, on the other there were also too many other sites affected for me to buy that theory just yet (it may change as the information is revealed) Why knock out Coyote Dispatch which had nothing more than mention of power failures? Why knock out CRFG? Too many little details that just hit wrong.

About Reggie:
tylenol+codeine
I don't know what tylenol is used for, but AFAIK codeine is used for split personality...

Codeine is used as a pain killer. It was a standard ingredient in Over the counter (behind the counter) cough medicines, then was available by perscription. I was not aware of its use in treating schizophrenia or multiple personality disorders.

I wasn't aware of codeine being used for that, and I couldn't find anything on google about it. I know that codeine tablets frequently contain high doses of Acetaminophen, the active part of tylenol. The codeine I was given after surgery had this in it. It looks to me to be primarily perscribed for pain, and sometimes for coughing.

Ok, I guess I was wrong, then. Sorry.

i'm leaning more towards the theory of someone going back in time and changing history so that NRU was never built - leaving Catalina as such a tiny little town that it doesn't rate an online newspaper; Jake has a car accident (and did not travel back in time); Catalina's bank was never founded; and other paradox effects from us seeing a different time stream.

We still have hanging ends, Zeladzny brough Jake with him from California, the letter of acceptance was very specific about covering full scholarship for Jake. If NRU was never built, do we need to discover why they moved there?

The time-meddling option is also troublesome because, from the vantage point of the Shadowy Figures (tm), it's self-defeating. Either we:

i) use 'Back to the Future' rules, in which case NRU is completely gone (photos of it start fading away, etc.). But in theory, the whole point of the exercise is to let the SFs keep using the machine, without anyone knowing about it. So it'd be dumb to create a universe in which there is no machine. Or we can

2) accept the time-branching theory, which is problematic in its own right. Even if NRU disappears in Meg/Jake's branch, it'll still exist in some other branch, where the SFs get to use the machine. In that case, we should still be able to access NRU.us, unless they fix it so that NRU is gone in our branch too, and I can't think how they might explain that.

You want to know something funny? I've looked all over the place for my NRU badge. Nothing, nada, nil, zilch, zero. I can't find the damn thing anywhere! I could have sworn it was in my kit, but it's not. No idea where it is.

Gone, huh? Seen any black helicopters lately?

Seriously, though, that's pretty wild. If steff's is gone too, we might have a full-blown conspiracy on our hands.

I keep mine in the TARDIS. Now if I could just find where I left the key....
