Yes, but the term "life" seems to rule out a machine or AI, doesn't it?

/me would link back to the enormous discussion/debate/thread we had during ILB about the definition of 'alive' and artificial intelligence being 'alive', but I think it's gone down in the annals... and I'm lazy... and I don't want to start the debate again Razz

it was a good one though... maybe someone else will Smile hehe

Well if he considers himself alive he just might

So I just checked and I'm (finally!) an official member of lukems BGB group. The group went from 13 to 120. So far is looks like nothing has happened in the group, not a single person has posted anything actually. I'll keep my eyes ope and keep you all posted.

Speculation

I think it may be a leap to assume that the new entity is Gravemind. It seems plausible that he is pulling some strings, but until we get hard and fast data, we can make no assumption.

That said, here is another piece of "evidence" to contribute to the speculation that he is involved. During a track on Halo 2 there is an audio clip embedded in the background. When reversed, speech forms. It is widely believed to be Gravemind, though the text is not entirely accurate, per Marty O'Donnell. Even so, it bares similarities to some of the communications with AR and this new "being."

Quote:
...I have walked among men and angels for three thousand years. Time has no end... no beginning... no purpose.

I wander the earth, seeking forgiveness for my horrible crimes against God and man.

I live to see death, destruction, over the light, but the light cannot be extinguished.

I live in a prison of my own demise.

I am lost in time...

Just to elaborate and see more discussion on the backmasking, there was a thread back in 2005 that discussed this here . Note, I also found another place in the Halo 2 sound track where there appears to be backmasking, but was unable to determine anything. I'll have to dig through my PC to try to find the sound clips that I created

I got into that group last week. It is really nothing to do with this ARG, at least so far. It is mostly for people to keep track and talk about the podcasts that Luke is going to start making about Bungie.
It seems that when AR joined that group, all of the other members got mad because it was going to bring an influx of ARGers asking to be in the group because of AR.

Oh, I'm sure the debate was quite lively. It's a fascinating subject, especially when we project to the future and assume that AI will reach uncanny levels of awareness and "individuality."

However, I think the question here is whether or not an AI or software function would consider another such program "life." Seems out of place to me.

I would point out 343 Guilty Spark's reaction upon seeing Cortana:

Quote:
A construct! In the core! That is absolutely unacceptable!

No problems identifying and naming the construct for what it is.

EDIT: Also note that there is a certain disgust conveyed as well. No fear or respect at all.

Arrrggghhh.

ARs riddle is killing me. IMO if there is an answer it has nothing to do with HALO. However, it is clearly a meta-puzzle or not a puzzle at all. This ARG hasn't even started yet and perhaps we're just witnessing the preface. At least that is what I'm telling myself so I can stop thinking about it.

Well um is guilty spark distinguishing between himself and cortana? Really this thing can be argued for a while without reaching any conclusions.

Also, i really havent seen any good arguments made for the entity being gravemind. The only one is that its "alive" therefore gravemind. Personally i dont think it holds up considering that gravemind is on the delta halo, well i am assuming that he is on the delta halo since we havent seen a single sign of the flood in the nearby space.

P.S. as some people have stated if it was gravemind and AR is/part of forerunner AI then he would be going crazy right now trying his best to stop it or fire a halo.

Not if that is not his protocol. If he is an Ark AI, then he might not have any protocols for firing the halos at all.

I've always wanted to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy.

It may not be Gravemind, but if that is the only argument that you've come across, then you haven't read this thread. There are plenty of very strong links between AR's posts and Gravemind. Almost too many to consider it coincidental.

I'll provide you with one and you can go back and dig up the rest if you choose to. AR refers to a millennia of refection and in the Gravemind bio on Halo 3 is states that he carries "the genetic memory of a millennia of slumber."

But who knows. Right now we are being led by the nostrils. Blindfolded. On rollerskates.
