[OT'ish] Marathon tie in? Probably not.
Kind of Spec'ish, but very Meta

I just want to take a moment to point something out. Because I know Everybody Loves Durandal. (That would be a great sitcom don't you think?)

I highly doubt that Bungie will ever tie Marathon in with Halo for a very specific, very meta reason.

It's important to remember that Bungie made Marathon before they were acquired by Microsoft. So while MS may now own the Halo license either fully or partially, the intellectual property of Marathon probably wasn't included in the sale and possibly is still owned by the person or persons who owned it to begin with. (I don't think MS cared about Marathon, I think they bought Bungie to get their hands on Halo specifically.)

Easter eggs are one thing. But, depending on how the legal stuff was hashed out? (Which I have no real knowledge of to be perfectly honest.) Of course Bungie says that Marathon and Halo are two different worlds because to make them one canon means they might be giving up ownership of all the good stuff that everybody loves so much about Marathon.

Or maybe I'm just over thinking it.

That's an extremely good idea, even if it is terribly out of game.

But I think it might not matter if Bungie decides to remake any Marathon games, and they've hinted they're not done in that universe.

Bungie both developed and published all three Marathon games and should still hold the rights thereto.

Well, we're an OOG forum so it kinda fits. Smile

Complete OT but too good to pass up. From the Wikipedia article on Marathon Infinity:

"In going from Marathon 2 to Marathon Infinity, Bungie was given a joke award by MacFormat magazine for 'largest version number increase'."

Well the leaked achievements contain one entitled "Marathon Man" that entails you accessing all the terminals in the game, so who knows?

Thanks for the spoiler warning... >_<

Some of us want to avoid learning about in-game features several months before the game ships.

Terminals in Halo 3? I haven't heard any rumors of terminals, if there is this might be the most story heavy of the three games.

As I said to Bruce in another thread, I highly doubt that Bungie as much as they (and we) love Durandal and the Marathon storline, are going to mix Mythos in any other capacity than similarity and easter eggs. It's usually bad form to try to mix two unrelated things like that, and I think that the Halo storyline (as much as I hate to say it) would suffer from an infusion of Marathon.

That said, wouldn't it be awesome to have Cortana and Durandal go toe to toe in an artificial sarcasm contest?

That would be something I might call an Easter Egg, something there for the people who understands what it means to get. Besides which, an achievement name and icon aren't part of the actual game. It's an extra side thing to achieve for bragging rights and to help keep people interested in maintaining their XBL accounts. Wink

I understand that it's something people would probably really like. I'd like it too, but I think it's a red herring at this point.

I think it's been stated before that the universes are not the same, but parallels can be drawn between them.

The addition of the spoiler above makes me wonder just how much fanservice they're going to throw into Halo 3 to make us Story Page fanatics weep with joy.
