It's Durandal! Run for the hills!

Seriously though, if you look at the server 05 when it's opened, doesn't it look like a sword?

And we know Cortana and Durandal were both named after mythical swords...perhaps we're now dealing with Joyeuse?

Durandal Wiki

Seeing as how Durandal is the main AI in Marathon, do you think perhaps this is Bungie tying the stories together? Or am I just going off on a hopeless tangent here?

Yeah, the Covies did pick him up. And "plied him with questions", if memory serves...

I fail to see any actual evidence that would make Durandal any part of this ARG. He's just not a part of the Halo storyline. I've heard that name thrown around like he's behind every corner but I'm sure Bungie won't run out of malevolent characters anytime soon, we don't need to scream Durandal every single time some mysterious bad character crops up. But, I mean, if you have reasons why you think that, I'm all ears. But the server isn't the evil thing, it's a repository of Forerunner informations, so it being Durandal is more than a stretch.

Repository? I thought AR said he was going to leave something behind to warn us before he was terminated.

I was just trying to make a joke...

At any rate, the sword in the server is my main thing so far...also let's not forget that in the events of Marathon 2 and Infinity, Durandal does become...omnipotent for the most part. What if he becomes the forerunner? Or created them? That's the only reason I bring it up is that this is a spec thread, and I'm just throwing this out there as a possible avenue that Bungie is trying to set up.

@Tomahawk: The audio recording calls it their well of information (in so many words.) And the narrative text in the video wouldn't make sense coming from any entity other than the Forerunner. So it's the Forerunner's multimedia repository.

@Jack: Sorry, you threw me off with the "seriously though."

Yes, but we know where he ends up.

And come to think of it, none of this has to be happening in the physical sense, so sure, could be 343 accessing the network remotely.

According to Conversations with the Universe, if GS wanted to get anywhere it would take a while:
Quote:
Revolution eta-condition: Well, everything is in a terrible state. The installation is ruined. I am stuck here in the middle of nowhere with only impulse propulsion, and the only good news is that the Flood breach has been halted, albeit inelegantly.

Now it is possible that he could have gone from Installation 04 to the ark and then back, but I'm not to sure about that. Impusle is slow compared to FTL travel. And it would also appear that GS was picked up by something/someone shortly after the installation of 04.

Picked up by the Profit, guided him to earth (momabssa) to look for something important.

Your reference for sword should be taken two ways!

1). Cortana is referenced as "Curtana Sword"
2). (spec) Gravemind = Sansevieria ehrenbergii[/i] Sword Sansevieria[/i] is a flowering plant which grows in northeastern Africa from Libya south to Tanzania, and also in Saudi Arabia. It occurs notably in proliferation along the Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania. Mature leaves are dark green and usually range between 0.5-1.5 m in length and 2.45-8.0 cm in width. The plant grows in tight clusters and in close proximity amongst itself.

Do these look plants look familier to you?

History
In 1911 the German entomologist Wilhelm Kattwinkel while searching for butterflies stumbled into a gorge. He asked the indigenous Maasai people what the gorge was called. They did not understand what he was saying and thought he was referring to the plants Sansevieria ehrenbergii, to which they responded "Oldupaai". Wilhelm Kattwinkel misinterpreted and mis-pronounced what they were saying by referring to the gorge as "Olduvai Gorge".

Human Use
The Maasai have used Sansevieria ehrenbergii for the purpose of antiseptic, natural bandage, rope, baskets, roofs and clothes. In the 1970s Paleoanthropologist Bill Montagne was working in Olduvai Gorge and became injured. He received treatment in the form of a natural bandage made from Sansevieria ehrenbergii, after which he was so impressed he began pharmaceutical research.

Maybe the "Flood" were surposed to be healing bacteria, but ended up being the enemy, became uncontrollable; and is what we know it as now.

Maybe?

Thanks for the thread link, Urk. The fact that Basis is in the slideshow definitely points toward the Halo we first landed on being the one last visited by the Forerunner. Pity it's been blown to pieces! (Which, actually, increases the likelihood that the Monitor is relevant, since it's pretty much the only thing left of the installation.)

I was just reading up on how one of the pictures looking like strep throat and it states this:

"Serotyping
In 1928, Rebecca Lancefield published a method for serotyping S. pyogenes based on its M protein, a virulence factor that is displayed on its surface.[2] Later in 1946, Lancefield described the serologic classification of S. pyogenes isolates based on their surface T antigen.[3] Four of the 20 T antigens have been revealed to be pili, which are used by bacteria to attach to host cells.[4] Currently, over 100 M serotypes and approximately 20 T serotypes are known."

Antigens are known to trigger an immune response so it could be that the origin or use of the flood was intended for healing but did become uncontrollable.

Here is something else we can glean about 343 from the new information:

When speaking with John-117 as they are activating the Halo at Installation 04, Guilty Spark says, "Why would you hesitate to do what you have already done?" and then "Last time you asked me: if it were my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring."

He believes John-117 to be a Reclaimer, which we must assume that he is, since he is able to retrieve the index, and he treats him as if he is the same entity who activated the Halo for its previous firing.

So what can we learn from this? Well, we have a log of the firing sequence (Array Recorder Data) with two distinct entities communicating. We can assume one of them is 343. Here is a snippet:

Quote:
[<array> 3 minutes 5 seconds]
{c-match-reconfirmed}. Sphere secure to .1889 of passing fleet. Offensive tactics confirmed.
Feint tactics in limited push.
<Array>
Sys//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////{online}
Index: {check}
{D-com} There is no peace left. No place where the parasite cannot reach. You were right about it
all.
Let us hope the final measure is not too late.

Still not convinced that this ties him to the present story arc, but it may mean that he was crucial in the decision to fire the Halo array, and that he made the assessment earlier then those who had the authority to ignite it.

If you follow the link, there's a sword in the middle of the picture. Anybody discussing the significance of that (I know of the obvious references to shields / swords throughout the fiction, just wondering if there is any significance to this particular image)? I haven't seen any discussion of it anywhere.
