Linking to another ARG discussion group that has some information that may hint at 343GS involvement.

Check it out.

If you follow the link, there's a sword in the middle of the picture. Anybody discussing the significance of that (I know of the obvious references to shields / swords throughout the fiction, just wondering if there is any significance to this particular image)? I haven't seen any discussion of it anywhere.

Nice find! Let me see if I can enhance the image a bit.

EDIT: adjusting the contrast seem to drop the illusionary quality and highlights that the "hilt" and the "tip" are on separate planes from what would be the "shaft" and "handle."

Here is something else we can glean about 343 from the new information:

When speaking with John-117 as they are activating the Halo at Installation 04, Guilty Spark says, "Why would you hesitate to do what you have already done?" and then "Last time you asked me: if it were my choice, would I do it? Having considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring."

He believes John-117 to be a Reclaimer, which we must assume that he is, since he is able to retrieve the index, and he treats him as if he is the same entity who activated the Halo for its previous firing.

Since we're speculating like crazy here...why rule out that it was John-117 himself who triggered it before? We're involving time-fold hiding entities now, so why not?

Nonetheless, it's got to be intentional. I'm stumped as to why it is there, or whether it has significance. Perhaps it is a hint that this "monitor" (which looks more like a sentinel to me) triggered the halos the first time. But I don't see where that really gets us. Or perhaps Bungie put it there just because it looks cool.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cortana halts the process. The Master Chief has claimed and inserted the Index into the control panel at 343's prodding. If Cortana doesn't show up, we can only assume that Master Chief and 343 would have activated the Halo array.

That quote makes we wonder what the heck the Index actually was. Why could the Chief pick it up like a stick, but Cortana could bring it into the computer with her?

Another point brought up in that scene is that she most likely knew the ENTIRE history of the Flood and Forerunner after Halo 1. She was in the main computer system, after all. And I can't help but think of how angry she was at Guilty Spark once she got into the system. The obvious explanation would be that he was duping the Chief into activating the Ring, but maybe she saw other things in 343GS's past to be upset about?

I think of the index like a fancy USB flash drive. The Chief inserted it into the console, but Cortana "seized" the data on it as it downloaded and stored it within her matrix to stop it from activating the installation.

Cortana absorbed all of the data from Halo, but it was so vast that she could not process it all. She was "bloated" and it slowed her down (from the books). When she got back to Earth, she dumped the data to UNSC(based on comments in the opening scenes of Halo 2 and from Ghosts of Onyx). So she does not necessarily "know" everything because she never had time to digest the information.

Well I think actually she had time to go over it when she was still in Halo, but when she had to leave she ran out of storage and it was a burden. Interesting that the UNSC got all that information, though, I had forgotten. I wonder what will come of it.
