[OT] Wiki temporarily out of service (now back in action)

Sorry for this folks - apparently godaddy decided to move the wiki site (and the entire www.wikibruce.com domain) to a better server because it was getting overloaded. However, they decided to do it during peak hours of the day, and estimate up to 8 hours.

Evil or Very Mad

The good news is, hopefully this means the wiki will end up running a little faster. Though I'm not expecting huge improvement. I'm assuming it's more for the server's sake, since it's a shared hosting plan.

Hang tight y'all...

No need for apologies. Without getting all mushy I'd like to say that you do a great job on that wiki. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that we are grateful for it. When I first came back wikibruce.com was the first place I went.

edit: oh and you're pretty good on the forums too Wink

No biggie. I host with GoDaddy as well and know that sometimes 8 hours can mean 20...so whenever it's back, it's back. In the meantime, I agree that no apology is needed. We owe you our thanks for hosting a great resource for new/current players!

God, I wish this was fixed now, because I just found out about this through Penny Arcade (unfortunately), so I'm way behind. All the threads here aren't really helping me. I need some overview to know what the heck is going on. Like, what was up with the 100 keys or whatever for the server 5? I wish I had been around for that.

I know. Deep apologies.

I filed a formal complaint earlier. Very interested to hear the response.

update: supposedly the move was to take place, well, 8 hours after it went down (whether that's waiting that long, it took that long to migrate the server - and it sounds like the whole server, not just this domain), and the new DNS, as usual, may take up to 24 hours to propagate the internet. I would hope and expect that the site will be back up within hours by now, if the move was actually completed by the 8 hour mark a few hours ago.

thebruce, In the absence( Bang Head ) of the wiki, I think we all realize how much it is utilized and how great a resource it is! You do a great job with it, and your efforts are greatly appreciated! Worshippy

You ROCK! Rock On

I now present you with the brownie of appreciation. Brownie

thanks all

I'll be away for the day at a funeral... If godaddy can be trusted, it should be back up sometime today, or late evening at the latest - ideally with everything still intact, but a part of me thinks this won't be a flawless migration.
The timeline is of course based on their "up to 8 hours for the move, up to 24 hours for the DNS propagation" statement...

I have a dedicated server. I could probably host your site during the ARG since the only other site on the server is mine.

I'm back.

It's still down.

Ridiculous.

And to answer a common question, it's not an active hosting issue, and it's entirely out of my hands because I hvae no access to the content. When the web site is being served, it's entirely fine. This is just the result of the badly timed decision of some idiot over in tech. Their hosting is more than enough. But if I had access to the site's content, I likely would have hosted it elsewhere temporarily. As it is, it has essentially disappeared until it returns. Nothing I can do, folks.

The wiki has returned

Ok, the wiki is back.

And I'm seriously considering moving the domain permanently to a different ISP. Apparently something in the code is causing a CPU spike in usage, which is why they migrated it to a different server. They haven't analyzed to find out where it's coming from, what's causing it, or when it occurres - they simply said I have 30 days to fix the problem for it to be migrated back to the original server. It doesn't seem to be a traffic problem, but something in the code coupled with the increased traffic has exponentially increased CPU usage. They simply can't/won't offer any help to fix the problem. With no tools at my disposal whatsoever to test such server properties, my only route is to make changes in the code, email support and find out if the change is sufficient - rinse, repeat as many times it takes until they approve the site's usage.

At least for now the wiki is once again active. Any help in populating it with the events of the past 2 days would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I've been contemplating and thinking over various perspectives of what happened...

I do remember reading a while back when checking out Mediawiki before choosing it, that this wiki software is more intensive than most other packages when it comes to CPU usage; it's more of a cpu intense wiki system. It may simply be that even though the traffic itself is far below what the plan implies, the cpu usage has a much higher footprint per page hit compared to 'standard' websites. In which case, there's nothing that could be done with this wiki to make is sufficient for the shared hosting plan.

So, my point - I'm contemplating upgrading to a virtual dedicated server by their suggestion, after viewing a few other ISP's plans (this one still being the best value for the cost), temporarily, for the next 2 or 3 months (assuming that's as long as the ARG goes) until the traffic dies down to reduce cpu usage to a sufficient level to be moved back to the regular hosting plan.

Again - Godaddy's hosting isn't the issue here - I'm just greatly upset at the process in which this all happened, not their service itself (and I've filed a complain regarding as much). While I'm a little surprised that the mediawiki cpu usage is actually that high for page serving, I do have more respect for whatever hosting and server setup wikipedia must have Shocked. I may also formally suggest to Godaddy they include a clause in their hosting plans that CPU usage is a factor in the plan, not just bandwidth and disk usage. =P

A temporary move to a virtual dedicated server should accomodate the requirements of running a high-traffic Mediawiki website. With a 30 day window to offer a 'solution' to the problem, I will most likely hold off on any further moving and downtime for a while. I hates me bad downtime!
Thoughts?

(unstickied as well since the wiki is now once again active)
