I'm a little confused. I can't find this anywhere. It's called server 05, but server #1 on the halo3 site. Did server 5 unlock server #1? And each Server unlocks a different Server? Think of it like a five-pointed star? Or is it the same server but named differently, as stated above?

The current accepted theory is that Server 05 is called server #1 on halo3.com because it is the first server we unlocked, however this server is actually the 5th and final piece of a 5-part timeline of sorts. The servers can be arranged in the order we unlocked them (halo3.com), or chronologically (the way everything else seems to do it).

At least that's what I'm gathered from my furious lurking.

If the reverse chronological theory holds, then the next server we unlock (#2 on Halo3.com) should be server 04 and keep going back until we reach the first server. Wonder what piece of Halo Story Bible gold that baby's holding for us!

An Explanation

Question: Why would the AI (or whoever left the transmission log) use the term "pyrrhic" when it obviously pertains to King Phyrrus from Roman history? They shouldn't know that term...

I somehow doubt we'd get much out of the ARG if the PMs hewed too closely to what hyper-advanced aliens from 100,000 years ago would say into their recording... for instance, how's your Forerunnerese? Wink

It's a translation. If the system is sophisticated enough to parse natural language in real-time (AR) then it's sophisticated enough to adopt modern idiom.

-- Steve's wondering how many native English speakers don't know the etymology of "pyrrhic" and yet use the term because they've heard it elsewhere.

Perhaps he was refering to Emperess Pyrrhicia who won the War of Jet in 2308 B.F. (before flood) by setting her own men on fire and firing them by catapults at her enimies. She took the city, but realized that:
a. She didn't have any men left to hold the city.
b. The city really stank now.

No, really, for suspention of belief we have to assume that it is being tanslated for us, and that the concept of a costly victory is universal.

More on topic about "What we know", using terms like "flood" and "ark" this is a paralell of the Noah's Ark story, wiping out all life except those saved in an Ark.

The firing of the Halo's was meant to stop the Flood, from what they said it was to do this by starving them to death rather then by directly killing them (I'm taking this from other threads on the forum, it is often dificult to tell what was disclosed in-game and what is speculation). Halo's were to kill off all beings of sufficient bio-mass to support the Flood (as opposed to all sentient life as was stated occasionally by others).

To me, this indicates that the firing of Halo wouldn't directly kill the Flood.
Also, I'd like to point out that since one of the Halo rings has been destroyed, a second firing now would be incomplete and wouldn't actually stop the flood, just cost untold millions their lives.

Back to the quotes:

"You were right about it all. Let us hope the final measure is not too late."
This is from one entity to another, so we can assume there are at least two entities. This also shows that they weren't orriginally in agreement. The one speaking was opposed to this plan of action. For the "not too late" part indicates that the "final measure" wasn't assured to work. In retrospect, it seems that it didn't completely work. Finally, this would also seem to indicate that the speaking entity was the one responsible for firing the Halos.

"It's done. By my hands."
Backs up the "responsible" aspect. It would seem that the descision was made by a single entity.

"The pyrrhic solution is ignited."
Referencing the firing of the Halo's and the huge cost of life involved.

"All I have left is the quiet of space to lull me to sleep."
This indicates two things. The entity responsible for the firing survived the firing. The person they were refering to previously did not.

"I will dream of you."
This backs up the previous assumption that the opposing entity did not survive. However, it also indicates that the entity was close emotionally to the one who was opposing it. It indicates also either an organic being, or perhaps an AI advanced enough to "sleep" and "dream". Recently, AR was a lot more mechanical and non-interactive. The entity that took over it was more... emotional, using terms like "be seeing you".

Whoever left these messages was not AR.

"Take these keys and dip from the wells of history."
To me, I think this is obvious. The "keys" are refering to the key codes that you get, and the "wells" are the servers. As each server is unlocked, more repositories of information will be presented. At the end, it will show a history of the Floods development, the Forerunners previous attempts to stop them, and what lead up to firing of the Halo's.

"Perhaps through others of us you may find how to save us all." To me, this is the most confusing, as it seems I would need a more in depth understanding of the Halo universe then I have to fully plumb it's depths. However, it seems that while the entity lost it's partner, there are others like him. The "save us all" part seems to indicate that they still need saving. Perhaps this would refer to "too late" part that was earlier or that the firing of the Halo put them in a state that they would need saving from. "through others" indicates that the entity didn't have all of the information that would be needed to save us all, but feels that others may have more information.

I know "guests" aren't really accepted on this board, but I'm at work and can't really register. I'm also not much of a Halo fan (the universe seems cool, but I don't have an x-box and the PC ports are done poorly). I just seem to think that more can be gleemed from taking the text we have apart an examining it. Also, I got to work at 12am after two hours of sleep. I plan on leaving work at 5pm. Perhaps over the weekend I can find this board at home and see about registering...

It also looks like each of the servers (on halo3.com)could be a new entity. So we may be hearing from a new one soon. Whether they are going to actually help us or not i'm not so sure.

I thought so too but then I checked each silhouette and matched it up with the existing spinning machine. I also noticed that when you stop it and manually rotate it with your mouse it reverses directions. Also, taking your mouse off it causes it to move away from you while putting your mouse on it makes it move toward you. Not sure if it means anything.

Fascinating enough, when it was earlier pointed out the correlation to Noah's Ark, something lciked in my brain. Flood. Ark. Maybe, according to the Haloverse, the flood as presented in the bible was not literal, but taking God's (AKA the Forerunners) name for some creatures. The ark would protect them from the firing of the Halos. Just an odd random thought.

Also, dipping into the Wells of History might relate to the servers, or perhaps looking into where the ark lies, which appears somewhere near Mount Elgon in Africa, or is at least related to that area. Another thought to chew on.

I wasn't convinced that this was a past event and not a future one until I re-read the Array Recorder Data.

7 Halos. 2 have been destroyed in MasterChief's time so that proves it.

Only one has been destroyed (Installation 04, in Halo 1). The so-called "Delta Halo" in Halo 2 was only deactivated, not destroyed.

Only Installation 04 (from Halo 1) was destroyed. Installation 05 (from Halo 2) is still intact.

What is that thing suppose to be though? Is it a Forerunner computer? Or some new type of index? I guess it could really be anything...maybe it's just a forerunner flashlight. We're all looking at this thing and clicking on it, but does anyone know what it actually is? Maybe there's something hidden in plain site?

It's an "alien server" (according to SOTA) that contains historical data and media.

Where did you find this SOTA information? I didn't see anything like that on the SOTA site (sorry if its a dumb question I'm new)

From the SOTA "Evidence" page:

Quote:
FINDINGS- The message boards are still out on this piece. One of our members came across a website that also contains this symbol (206.16.223.65) but it's much to early to determine if this is valid evidence of Ancients. None the less, the supposed "alien" server is quite interesting. The quest for the truth about this image remains.

The IP links leads to the page with the Forerunner machine, so I assume that's what they're referring to.

NOTE: The link originally led to the countdown page -- this was most likely because we discovered SOTA a bit prematurely.

Is it possible that the Forerunners can travel through time, or send their monitors back through time. I am only saying this becasue the tranmsission log talks about altering time.

My wild theory is that forerunners are from the future. they are sending information back in time to fix a problem. I think they are sending the monitors and other machines back intime because organic bodies would get destroyed in the process of time travel.
