Oh, Bungie has done backward masking before; in the first Halo game it's how they rendered the dialog of the Elites in-game (reversed dialog from the Human sergeant and put it through a filter), and in the second game an entire poem was backward-masked into the soundtrack as an easter egg. (And a puzzle. One that hasn't been entirely solved yet, I might add.)

Yep, my point exactly - I participated in ILB too, and I'm familiar with the Elite's speech in Halo 1, and you rightly point out that it's trivial to slap a reversed-speech soundclip into a soundtrack, which they've done plenty of times before. The HARD part (really "impossible" with current techniques) is to make the reverse speech say something meaningful when played forward as well.

Anyhoo, I've said my piece, good luck!

I don't mean to add fuel to the fire, but if you look at the video posted here by marathon man, watch carefully at 00:32, you can clearly see a planet with rings, wich could most possibly be saturn, which I've bolded from the "hidden" reverse message. As a side note I had already thought I'd seen a planet with rings when watching it from server 05, which I was reminded of when I read this.

Drink your Ovaltine.

Very Happy

Can some wonderful person with the software to do so try laying RyZombie's audio over Marathon Man's video?

If someone could get me the actual file for the youtube video, I could lay the audio over it with subtitles and everything.

A visualizer? I got coagula on the computer upstairs. I'll see what I can do.

I cleaned up the audio a bunch. This makes it pretty clear the last line is

Also, there isn't anything hidden backwards. At all. Anything you hear is only a coincidence. Even the spoken word wasn't meant to be difficult, it just was because they had two people read it and merged them.

To clean it, I split the channels, inverted one, and remixed it as a mono. Then I used the equalizer and noise removal to remove most of the echo. Then a little amplification.

Please let me know if this is helpful. I'm new to the community so I don't want to break any unwritten rules.

hey i dont know if you noticed but the left and right channel, there are some differences in the in the audio on both channles.

If this doesn't lead somewhere with the actual audio track, then somebody could just record themselves reading the transcript clearly with no bg noise and then play it backwards.

The problem is, I'm halfway sure that the tone and accent of one's voice matters a lot when making backwards messages. So that may not be the most reliable course of action.

Here is an idea though. If any of you remember watching Twin Peaks, you know that the Man From Another Place got his unique vocal style by recording something, playing it backwards, having the guy read it backwards and then reversed to make it sound weird.

If someone were to record themselves reading the "backwards" script of the vocal transmission and play that backwards, if it sounds like the original script, we may have a backwards message.

Just a thought.

I think I probably meant an analyser, spectrum or spectral something like that. As you can tell I haven't got a clue, what it is called, I have misplaced the one I was using in Linux Razz but what I do know is in Year Zero, well in the few days I paid attention, all kinds of funky stuff was hidden in various formats, like morse code ,ip addresses and images.
