See & Say ( Was "Say What?")
Off The Wall Request

What if...
You could click on a "Say It" link in a player's profile and have them say their name? Similar to www.webster.com .

I noticed a lot of times in the ARGcasts, that I'll hear someone say their forum name and it's so different than what I had imagined. Or, they'll say someone's name followed immediately by a "sorry if that's not pronounced correctly". In a recent show, mine was pronounced differently than I always envisioned it. In my case it's no biggie as it's really just another name backwards and there is no "right" way to say it.
SpaceBass would never again have to deal with the "fish or instrument" question, we wouldn't have to guess which syllable of Jetamo gets accentuated and we'd have less cross-gender faux pas (How do you pluralize that?).

I know the forum software can be a bear to hack/maintain especially for mods and if it's not feasable from a technical perspective, then that's that. I'm not sure if anyone has any passion around it either, but I had to bring it up.

To make it work, I'd say it'd have to be a hack of the profile setup/display area(s) and hopefully, to the forum pages, proper. Possibly as a new icon in the email/IM/PM area or maybe just a click the avatar function.
Doing it via the profile setup would allow the player to upload a sound file. Otherwise there'd be too much work in setting them all up based on PMs, emails or VMs.

Edit: Just noticed that HitsHerMark started a thread in the Halo3 forum with this exact same title less than a day before I started this one. To reduce possible confusion and so I don't look like a copycat, I'm tweaking the title.

Well I like the idea. People are forever pronouncing my name in weird ways.

Yeah, I'd like to clear up the confusion in pronouncing mine too.
But seriously, that is totally an off the wall, wacked out, crazy, and entirely sensible idea. I often (especially in irc) don't properly read names to pronounce them and just sort of sound them in my head as a sort of mumbled thing that somewhat fits the letters. I'd imagine it wouldn't be the easiest thing to tack on, but I'd say people like SpaceBass would like the confusion of their nicks to be cleared up.

p.s. Wow, I just noticed in the preview the similarities between the colour in the bass and the colour scheme of the forum. Coincidence??

I like your idea Rogi ("Ro-gee", right? Razz), mostly because I have some experience with what you describe... (it's funny when you have three groups of people saying "what do you mean 'how would I pronounce Giskard?' There's only one way to pronounce it, isn't there?" and then have all three groups have a different way Wink)

It would pose a moderation issue though... you'd have to check what people upload to make sure it's not profanity or yelling or turn-your-volume-up-then-scream kinda stuff Neutral

I thought about the profanity problem, but thought it best not to mention it and put ideas in people's heads. Would we really have to monitor/approve all new audio nicks? I assumed it wouldn't be any different than when a player posts an audio file anywhere else on the fora. Until someone hears and reports it, it's benign. when reported, it can be addressed, just as it would for a "posted" file.

OK - so being in the Netherlands, I would assume that I would have to spit a lot in the back of my throat to do the G - right? Wink I have great fun gobbing at bar staff asking for Hoegaarden. And then have to make it sound like I'm tending greenery to get the right drink Rolling Eyes

I am having somewhat-horrid flashbacks to learning Linklater voice techniques in college by tossing around hand-made stuffed phonemes whilst speaking the sound they represented.

Bumpity.
Can anyone think of an unobtrusive way to integrate one of the three examples located HERE into the existing profile real estate?
