Real-Life Adventure Delays Volvo Treasure Retrieval

Real-Life Adventure Delays Volvo Treasure Retrieval
Controversy Sparked by $500 Million Real-Life Treasure Find Adds New Mystery and Intrigue to Final Leg of Volvo's Online Hunt
Quote:
(IRVINE, Calif.) June 22, 2007-In a twist worthy of any great pirate story, Volvo Car Corporation today upped anchor--at least temporarily--on the last crucial leg of its global online treasure hunt: the retrieval of a prize treasure chest filled with $50,000 in gold and a key to a new Volvo from the sea floor. The retrieval of the chest will hang in the balance until controversy dies down over the discovery of real life treasure by Volvo's Hunt partner, Odyssey Marine Exploration.

woo. real treasure! I wonder if the partner had an idea that the treasure might be nearby? So the partners chose that spot to hide the game treasure. Reminds me a bit of Cryptonomicon.

The article claims that the two spots are not anywhere near each other. The company claims their new find is in international waters in the Atlantic, while they placed the POTC chest in territorial waters near Gibraltar.

The timing is coincidental, they say. But the new wreck was found in the same time frame that the company had boats at Gibraltar for the dropping of the POTC chest (allegedly not near their new wreck). Spain is claiming the company was working on the new wreck somewhere in their territorial waters when in fact it was POTC.

And the holdup is Spain is threatening to seize the company's boats, and as the company is the only one that can find the POTC chest, and they're not willing to put their boats at risk, the winner can't have her three hour tour to "find" the POTC chest. Either that or Gilligan and the Skipper aren't available.

All will be sorted out in litigation someplace. Or as soon as the company feels safe revealing the exact location of the wreck to disprove Spain's claims. If they can.

This is a great lesson in games (and maybe life) whatever can go wrong, will at some time go wrong - and it is impossible to foresee and plan for all the things that might go wrong. I'm great at planning for contingencies -but I would never have come up with the scenario of "company hired to plant treasure finds real treasure; because of the value of the real treasure, the country near where the planted treasure is located threatens to seize company's boats - essential to their work - so the company refuses to go to the location of the planted treasure, but can't reveal the location of the planted treasure because it is a contest."

You can't make this stuff up. Maybe there is money in advertising law. Although I've heard rumors that their clients complain bitterly about the lawyers not letting them have any fun. Smile

Slight update on this soap opera. One ship released by Spain, but still unsure whether the ship at Gibraltar can leave without interference....
