I don't think that'd do much good; the books we're looking for seem to be shelved outside of where they normally are. Hmph.

I'm still waiting for a reply from June. Hopefully there will be one in Birmingham, since that'd be nice and easy for me to visit. And we'll see what we can do about Cheltenham this weekend, assuming no-one else is visiting there?

New entries on Amy's blog! (http://amygreenford.blogspot.com/)

Some stuff from Miss Havisham about the fake. It appears that the man who courted her, as it were, was the fake Fforde!

Also, what on earth is that Key about?

So ffake Ffforde is Compeyson! Interesting. Very interesting indeed. Hmm. I wonder why he's doing it? Fictional characters in the Outland are unusual, but it shouldn't be too hard to fox him in that case. Fictional characters are easy to confuse because they don't think in the same way as us outlanders.

I need to re-read my Next books for more ideas! Smile

In other news, still no word from June about the location of the Dupines. Anyone else heard anything?

Ahhh, but Havvy said the man who jumped out with her was NOT Compeyson.

Of course, this assumes that the Groom was the fake author... when did Havvy come through and when did June start getting the ffake Ffforde emails?

Well, I've made it back and I have success to report. Fortunately a colleague by the name of Tom decided to come with me despite never having heard of Jasper Fforde or much in the way of args (but he did stumble across a geocache accidentally one time, which was the perfect qualification). He was the one who had the success - we covered two floors each and he found three books to my none (apart from Wind in the Willows which I found from myf's pictures because we needed a reference).

The first was The Collected Writings of Edgar Allen Poe, found in the Ornithology section (the clue we had referred to The Raven, ornithology is the study of birds). The riddle inside:

Quote:
Oh faded bride, you are now lost
Though at least you will never get burned
You thought you were good,
But now know to your cost
That I'm better because I HAVE LEARNED

The second was Wuthering Heights although we've already had that one.

The third was The Picture Of Dorian Gray in the Art History section. The riddle:

Quote:
I have plucked all the dark crow's feathers
And made all the besty bits go
So all will be fffeared
And excited and cheered
By my gothicky Pepys Fffiasco

As with the previous riddles, Dorian Gray's one seems to point to The Raven and The Raven's would point to Great Expectations. IMHO, I think this points to Compeyson as Ffforde even more because it seems a little personal.

I tried creating a Flickr account putting the photos up there but it doesn't seem to want to work today so I put them on my own website instead. They are of the shelf location, riddles and one of the amazing Tom.

For reference, we looked through all but the ground floor between us. But given that I didn't find anything, I feel my powers of searching through endless books are pretty useless and there is the strong possibility that these books keep getting moved, so keep looking, we still have two to find (including Alice: I looked all through Maths, some card tricks and some chess to no avail). Two places on the third floor I didn't check were the antiquarian bit and all the drawers containing sheet music. You're welcome to try if you really want to.

Less important things I have learnt in this process:
-Many types of books are coincidentally colour coded, especially the sports sections. Golf is green, cycling yellow, rugby red and so on. I had forgotten that there is a pretty comprehensive series of Maths books (it was just a year ago that I graduated in Maths) that are yellow and it's not uncommon to see, as I did today, a yellow sale in the Maths section. Thing is, the books we are looking for are almost identical. So that was fun.
-Vietnam has a tourist industry
-Pop science and pop psychology books have almlost identical titles that are invariably sensationalist. Really, some of the titles bear no relation to what's in the books themselves and there can't be that many physics books involving sex. Do physicists know what sex means? Wink
-Foyles has an amazing range of books on any subject you care to think of. Brilliant advertising strategy: not only will it be the first place I now think of for books I also know where to find a hell of a lot of them.
-That some people really have nothing better to do than walking round a book shop looking at every single book. Sad thing is that part of me wants to go back and do the ground floor just for completeness. *headddesk*

But, but..... I looked at the ornithology bit. Three times over the two days. And my sister double-checked for me. IT WASN'T THERE!!!!! *sob* Crying or Very sad

Seriously though, well done for finding those damned things. I knew there had to be more there somewhere, but I reached the end of my tether. I intend to spend a couple of hours in Waterstone's in Reading tomorrow, and at least now we've narrowed down what I'm going to be hunting for.

I've had a go at working out a few suggestions regarding where the remaining books might be. It's a bit rough and I'm not that familiar with a couple of the novels but here goes:

Frankensteinpregnancy & childbirth – it's often seen as an allegory of these; medicine; science/biology; theology/religion – in creating life Victor is playing God

Great Expectations self-improvement – Pip's ambition; crime - Magwich (though I think we've had that already); romance/weddings – Miss Havisham (if you were being a bit mean), Pip & Estella's relationship; finance/economics, sociology – much of the plot revolves around money and social class

Gulliver's Travelstravel – obviously Wink ; exploration; transport; power/politics – central theme in the novel; foreign languages – Gulliver is noted for being a gifted linguist and is able to quickly learn the languages of the countries to which he travels

Three Men in a Boat – sorry, not that familiar with this one but you could try humour; travel/boating; geography/history of England

Tristram Shandy autobiography – again, obviously; humour; war – 1 of the main characters is obsessed with war and recreating battles; philosophy – central theme in the novel

The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare – not at all familiar with this one either but you could try religion/Christianity – it was written as a Christian allegory; politics/philosophy; revolution; crime; detectives/police – it centres around an anti-anarchist division of the police; poetry – the central character is a poet

Alice in Wonderland travel – Alice's journey into Wonderland; games/hobbies – croquet, cards, etc; fantasy, dream interpretation – at the end Alice wonders if it's all been a dream; mental health – lots of mad characters Wink

Hope that helps Smile

If anyone's needed to go to the Nottingham bookshop then I can definitely cover that one. I might be able to get to the Lincoln one too if needs be.

As an aside, the riddle that PuzzledPineapple found in The Raven (well done, by the way Worshippy ) has intrigued me a bit. Although the riddle obviously refers to Miss Havisham and Great Expectations, the first 2 lines about the burned bride:

Quote:
Oh faded bride, you are now lost
Though at least you will never get burned

also very strongly reminded me of Jane Eyre and Bertha Rochester/Mason dying in the fire. It's probably nothing but, given that the first Thursday Next book featured Jane Eyre very heavily, i wondered whether the reference might be significant or even whether we're looking for a 13th book Confused .

If fake Ffforde has some sinister plan with the scribblers, don't you think there might be some clues hidden in the starter and finisher lines we have received?

I forgot to email Amy so just done that.

Don't worry, I'm sure that at any given time there's a high probability that at least two of these books aren't in the 'right' place. That's the thought I'll be consooling myself with when someone says they were all on the first and third floors.

Agh!! Well done!! Shows just how bad I am at spotting books. I'll go back to Forbidden Planet tomorrow at lunch.

The Forbidden Planet thing was right - see below. Still haven't found them yet, but at least she says they'll be on the right shelf - I've been checking all shelves rather than the missing books.

Just to recap, the following books have been found:
Dorian Grey – found in art history
Wind in the willows – found in crime
Pride and Prejudice – found in politics
Wuthering Heights – found in relationships
The Raven – found in ornithology

The following books remain to be found:
Gulliver's Travels
Frankenstein
Great Expectations
3 men in a boat
Alice in Wonderland
Tristam Shandy
The Man who was Thursday

Latest reply from June...

Sorry I didn't email you this yesterday as I promised to, but I was feeling under some weather and did not go into work. The other shop in London is called Forbidden Planet, I should imagine they will be on the shelves labeled with the letter with which their authors' surname starts. I do not have the names of the books I'm afraid just the name of the shops.
I decided to email the man who says he is Jasper with the names of some of these books shops but not all of them. I have discussed this with another helpful person like yourself and I think it would be best if I didn't let him know I don't think he is really Jasper in case he stops talking to me. I don't really want to talk to him any more, but he might tell me something important to help find out what he is up to.
But I don't know what to ask!

Hi June

What a curious request. Dupine Classics were cheap as chips (look who wrote Wuthering Heights according to them!). I don't know for the life of me why we acquired them. I've been looking for where editions might still be stocked but the database keeps crashing, so I haven't got them all. I think there are a few more in bookshops and libraries up north. But in the meantime, here's what I could find. Apart from Foyle's, where there's quite a few, I think all the places only have one book each.

Best

Bob

Bath, Waterstone's

Birmingham, Waterstone's (New Street)

Bolton, Waterstone's

Cambridge, Border's

Canterbury, Waterstone's

Cheltenham, Waterstone's

Fareham, Waterstone's

High Wycombe, Waterstone's

Ipswich, Waterstone's

Leeds, The Idle Hour

London, Forbidden Planet (what a classic book is doing there, I don't know)

London, Foyle's

Nottingham, Waterstone's

Reading, Waterstone's (Broad Street)

Swindon, Waterstone's

Whitby, The Whitby Bookshop

Yeovil, Waterstone's

And some libraries.

Blackburn Library

Darwen Library

Neath Library

Redruth Library

St Ive's Library

Wokingham Library

Shocked We don't have to search for books in all of them, do we?!? And since when did libraries figure in this?

If we have to raid the libraries as well as bookshops, I can easily do Wokingham today (they open late on Thursdays), and do Reading Waterstone's tomorrow instead. Can possibly do High Wycombe over the weekend, unless someone else would like to take that one? At a push, I could visit Swindon too, but would rather not if I'm going there next Saturday as well. Fareham might also be possible over the weekend if someone does one or more of the others I've mentioned, but it's a bit of a trek.

As for them being under the author's name, bear in mind that Wind In The Willows was actually filed under A in the Crime section, and not under G for Kenneth Grahame (which is where I originally looked, several times). So logic doesn't necessarily come into this thing!

This morning I got the following email. I'm not sure whether it's relevant or not (I've got a bit confused by everything Laughing ) so I decided to post it in case it's important.
Quote:
Dear entrant

Please be advised that Mr Ffforde himself has requested that the deadline for the competition be extended to 5th July. Do especially remember to send in a Scribbling Tiebreaker (see http://tinyurl.com/3bqapn for details). It will settle ties in each quiz and the best three will, regardless of quiz entry, also win a set of signed Thursday Next novels. Good luck! Mr Ffforde has also expressed hope that you may be able to join him in Swindon on 7th July for the reading of his Next book.

ps
