UPDATE: Meg's blog (Jan 29, 2004)

I'm scared. The ultrasound yesterday showed that the baby was the size of a 35 week old. Surfactant tests show that his (yes, his) lungs are nearly mature enough to work properly. Chromosonal tests show nothing apparently abnormal. He's just big, really big, and his heart rate is insanely high. Sometimes up to 275 beats per minute. I don't think he sleeps. He thrashes around so much that my midsection is covered in bruises. I've got to go in for daily scans and could be induced as early as next week. The doctor said if I go to term, I will die during delivery. How poetic.

The dreams aren't helping. One night I was at a crossroads, two dirt roads stretching through the desert for as far as I could see. I couldn't turn back and go the way I came from. One choice was into a nest of scorpions. One choice was paved with rattlesnakes. One choice was set afire with a heatless, white flame. I had to choose my path. I don't remember which way I went. I hope it was the flame. It seems a quicker death than the others.

One night I was holding the baby in my arms, about to nurse him. He latched on for a minute then drew back, blood running down his chin. I thought he had cut his mouth but couldn't find a wound. Doublechecked. I was making blood, not milk. Set the baby in his crib. Stroked his brow. He looked up and bit the tips of my third and fourth fingers off. Woke up.

One night I was at a dinner party and every time I tried to talk to someone I spat blood all over them. All anyone would say to me was the word "mandrake". Over and over, all night long, blood and mandrake. Woke with blood on my pillow. I had bitten my tongue.

Tried calling my pastor. Can't seem to get through, static on the lines. I'm scared. I'm scared scared scared. I'm cold. It's cold. It's hostile. Pray for me.

I wonder why the ultrasound didn't show the cloven hooves, horns, and tail on the little devil...

Just a note, Mandrake is a plant that is traditionaly used in many rituals. It is some bad mojo when used on the body though, it contains Atropine, Hyoscyamine, and Scopolamine. It can easily kill you. I doubt that she is taking any, but I was trying to figure out if her dreams could be drug related. It doesn't look like any of those would cause nightmares though.

More than you ever wanted to know about mandrake

From the encyclopedia brittannica online article on mandrake

Quote:
The mandrake has long been known for its poisonous properties. In ancient times it was used as a narcotic and an aphrodisiac, and it was also believed to have certain magical powers. Its forked root, seemingly resembling the human form, was thought to be in the power of dark earth spirits. It was believed that the mandrake could be safely uprooted only in the moonlight, after appropriate prayer and ritual, by a black dog attached to the plant by a cord. Human hands were not to come in contact with the plant. In medieval times it was thought that as the mandrake was pulled from the ground it uttered a shriek that killed or drove mad those who did not block their ears against it. After the plant had been freed from the earth, it could be used for beneficent purposes, such as healing, inducing love, facilitating pregnancy, and providing soothing sleep.

Crossroads and mandrake

OK after gooling and getting gobs of sites about Linux, and one particular Dead Again song, there are a few sites left about Hecate Trivia or Trevia, Hecate of the Three Ways, Goddess of Crossroads (not to mention Goddess of the Scene of the Crime).

Quote:
Hecate has many symbols. Some of the most common are the following:
Crossroads, Keys, Torches, Entrence ways, Gate ways, Black Dogs or Hounds, Black ewe lambs, Cauldron, Snakes, All phases of the Moon, the Sea and Graveyards. There are many more.

Hecate has control over Birth, Life, Death and Re-birth. All major Rites of Passage, Hecate is there. Hecate has control over all the powers of nature and the secrets it contains. Hecate is a protectress, of Her followers, sailors and those in travel. Zeus made her a nurse to the young,(A child's nurse) so she also protects new life. It makes sence that Hecate would take part in the Re-birth of the newly incarnate soul.
