Scott. Scotty. Scotty-Dog. The Scott Man. Scottorino.

ok. got a reply about the "Scott" fellow (former sentry) that popped up in some of those random text snippet floating around. here's what marie had to say:

Quote:

Hee Scott! He went by the very creative username Scotty. I wonder what he's up to these days. He'd be crushed to hear about Kevin

I don't really remember any fundamental disagreement. Sure, there was always bickering. Especially with Scotty, Kevin, & Art in a thread. They could sure get things going

I think he was a web developer – beyond just designing sites, some pretty heavy web applications, which always seemed to get him some reluctant respect from Art and intimidate Kevin (yes, Kevin could be intimidated ) Scotty was crazy as all get out, too. He and Kevin sort of hung out in the same threads and riffed off of each other, but Scotty was smarter than Kevin about security stuff. Kevin was interested, but in a different way. He was always looking at the way the people reacted (or didn't react) to various threats – he loved phishing scams and kept trying to talk Scotty into helping him build one that would help teach people (internet-wise types, the slashdot crowd, bloggers, etc) that they are just as vulnerable as the 70 year using email to send around pictures of her grandkids. Scotty was more interested in the actual framework and programming that went into things. He'd be all over the BOIL, for instance. Ripping it apart and figuring out how it all worked and why.

Honestly, I hate to say this because it's always the person you least expect, but I can't imagine that he'd be involved in this at all. He took internet security very seriously, that's why he'd never buy into Kevin's idea of building some funny scamless scam that would build awareness. He thought that while it might do some good and awareness is a key aspect of defense, it would weaken the offense – or something like that.

I don't know if this helps at all I hope

Marie

so there's some additional back-story on old sentries.

OB out.

Alright, got another PM from Marie, here's what else i got:

Actually Marie, I just thought of a few more questions that might help.., i'm really sorry if i'm being a bother, it's just that..., well.., if we don't look into everything we can, then can we really say we gave our all to stop whatever's going on? I know i can't.

So with that in mind, I was wondering if you remembered anything else about scott, a description, where he was from, his favorite color? Favorite Food? a website he used to go to alot? that stuff might be helpful in tracking him down. (for that matter, do you have his contact info somewhere? maybe tucked away on a napkin somewhere?).

I also wanted to see what you knew about 'Peter'? He was apparently (possibly) a former sentry that HP mentioned had attended Miskatonic as well circa 1999. Anything you might remember would be a help.

Also, how many sentries did there used to be before the crash? It seems like quite a few didn't find their way back.

Again, any info you could give me would be great. I'm not a technological whiz like the rest of the folks around here, but I'm pretty good at running a lead into the ground.

Thank you so much for all the help.

PS - Remember, lunch is on me heh.

You know, I don't have any contact info for Scott. I looked yesterday when I thought he might want to know about Kevin. We lost so much stuff when we lost the old forums

Peter. Hmmm. I could be wrong, but I think he got his PhD in some crazy computer stuff. Really, way over my head. He was very cerebral about stuff, it drove me nuts. Fortunately, he was good about getting his points across and he never minded replying to my PMs asking him to speak in stupid-ese. I actually learned quite a bit from him.

He became extremely busy in various real-life things and slowly stopped coming around. Last I heard, he was involved in some pretty heavy research thing, but that was at least a year ago. I think it was Art that mentioned that to me, he may know more. But, really, he could be anywhere doing anything. He's certainly smart enough.

I must admit, I've always had the feeling that he's still lurking. He just seemed to care too much about this place to not. Of all the Sentries that we lost, it would surprise me the least if he just popped in one day out of the blue.

As for our numbers, we had around a thousand registered users after the last purge – Art was always insistent on purging the database of people that hadn't posted in a long while. It drove me nuts, but wasn't worth the fight (I'm sure you could imagine how that would go ). That makes it sound bigger than it was, really. We had a lot of people that would just poke in occasionally. Out of the more regular types, there were probably 50 or so of us. So not a huge membership, but a solid one. I wish people would come back to bring the discussion back around to crazy security issues instead of all this BA stuff. I just want to forget all about it. (at least right now, give me an hour and I'll want to lead the witch hunt to Florida. )

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've been a bit overwhelmed by everything that's happened. I couldn't sleep at all the other night and then yesterday I got home from work, sat down on the couch, and just fell asleep like nothing had happened. I woke up around 1, had some tea, and fell right back to sleep. I never sleep that long! And, strangely enough, it's not even noon and I want to take a nap. I think I got too much sleep

I hope this answers a few questions
Marie

This is disturbing. I hope it's just a stress reaction.

No kidding. Sleeping/dreaming is not leading to anything good. Maybe our baddie is Freddy Kruger.
