Generics are characters-in-training. They may have a particular role in mind, especially later in their development, but early on they are individuals, but kind of individuals of a mass-produced type. It's a bit of an odd concept...

So june probably has aspirations of a character, which could be Havisham, or Jane, or indeed anyone at all. I'm not sure that we could know...

*is a bit confused herself*

EDIT: I've just re-checked the draft from june's blog. There was definitely more to the story than that before. I remember Pinocchio and the speed reader and some sort of cross dimensional probe from the Outland in the corner. And a stunt cricket. And they saw the engine of the story in a basement, and went to Thursday's office, where she said she was the LBCOS (last bastion of common sense) and... yeah. There were 49 pages, I remember, and now there are about 26.

EDIT 2: OMG. 49 pages. *hits self on head* Don't suppose anyone saved the draft, did they? *hopes*

This is a tad bit complicated, so bear with me.

In the letter from the offices of Text Grand Central scanned onto June's blog, it says that the character causing havoc is from one of Jasper's unpublished juvenilia's (i.e. early works).

When I went to Jasper's book reading in Ilkley last year, he said that he wrote the Nursery Crime books (or at least The Big Over Easy) before he got started on the Thursday Next series.

When Thursday goes to hide out in the Well of Lost Plots, she takes part in the character exchange program and house-swaps with the lead character from The Big Over Easy (at that point still unpublished), Detective Sergeant Mary Mary.

Mary Mary lives on a boat (of sorts) "on the banks of a reservoir somewhere in the Home Counties". Captain Nemo lives two boats down on the Nautilus (thus our connection to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea).

I've tried entering:

Short Sunderland (the name of Mary Mary's boat)
Reading (where the Big Over Easy Takes Place)

No luck yet though...

Nope, not what I meant. What is linked to now is a word document 26 pages long. What was there before was a pdf file, 49 pages long. However, I found my other laptop had saved the previous version of the file, so here it is linked from my geocities site:
www.geocities.com/carter74656/tn5_teaseruk.pdf

There's nothing highly useful on page 49 though, sadly, apart from a mention of a book called Summer Lightning. Tried that though, as well as the castle at which it's set, and no joy. Feel free to play around with permutations though. Smile

Hi all I have been watching this game with interest. May I come in?

I was thinking about the upgrade alerts on page 332 to 333

Quote:
The missing footnotes on page 332 should read:

4: 'ffffffgghuhfdffffffggggoooonpicUp..passs1cccccwwww?'
5: 'kkkkkcar45kAR45%%%%%bloody hellfire!>>>>>>sodding jjjjjjjjjj Bureaucrats even out here+eeee'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The missing footnotes on page 333 should read:

6: ' jjjjjjjjahagssffffffssss- Is anyone out there? all I ddddddd can see is endless BLEEDING ocean-///////'

line 4. has "picUp..pass" or the jibberish may be code.
I was thinking that this might be what fits into the extra url for the www.jasperfforde.com page.

Cheers
Scott

Hi all, first time posting (and contribuing to an ARG, despite writing a paper about them last year!). I entered this rabbit hole via June's blog after emailing her regarding the final question in the quiz, and have been digging to find information since.

You've all discovered some great information, but there's a number of things that I think haven't been addressed here yet, which I'd like to highlight:

1) In her video annoucement via Amy, Havisham says not to communciate with Ffforde via handheld communication device (or somesuch). I'm pretty certain that hidden somewhere is a mobile number, though I've had no luck at all hunting it down.

2) All Ffforde's and Niebla's communications seem to end with a prefix to the name - YG. What does this mean? I wondered if it was a relative of Yorrick Kaine from books two and three, but I don't think it's likely now.

3) All this is leading up to a big event in Swindon at one o'clock this Saturday (which I intend to attend). Coincidentally, Jasper has just updated his website with this, an article about roads in Swindon being given names from his works. Hmm...

I can't offer anything else myself yet, though I'm still digging. I'm 100% certain that the footnotes are irrelevant - that is a genuine printing error with the first batch of books and seems unrelated to Ffforde's activities.

Do you think June still has Ffforde's phone number? We could always get her to check, or we could get her to email him to get him to ring her so we can get the phone number off of her...

Hi June;

I'm part of the hunt trying to track down the Fffake. As such, I need your help.

On her video annoucement recorded by Amy Greenwood, the bride mentions not communicating with the imposter with handheld communications devices (or somesuch). I believe that there's a chance that Ffforde, though in seclusion from his email messages, might still be using mobile phones.

Do you, by any chance, have his number? During your early email exchanges it's not mentioned but then I'm sure you didn't publish all your discussions online.

Wishing you well,
-[my real name]

EDIT: Rewatching the YouTube video now, it appears I am mistaken. However I'm certain that I saw an indignant Havisham warm about the imposter somewhere and use an anachronistic euphamism for a mobile phone.

Reply already!

Hello Ben,

Sorry I haven't been answering my emails very quickly recently, I've been feeling under some weather, it is probably because my assessment is coming soon, I'm feeling very nervous. I agree with you that the Jasper Fforde who has been writing to me is in fact an imposter! I feel awful, because before I found this out, he asked me to send all the scribbler entries to him - and I did! I do not have his phone number I'm afraid, and even if I did, I wouldn't want you to speak to him because when I spoke to him on the phone he was really horrible to me and he would probably be really horrible to you too!
This imposter Jasper has done some other awful things already. Amy told me that the imposter is really from Bookworld and he has 'bookjumped' into our world to help The Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco get published for real. To make up the book, he is in the real world tricking people into writing for him and directing the characters of The Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco, who in the Bookworld, to rip out all the good bits from classic books - turning them blank!
Now I suspect that he has terrible plans to use the scribblers to make his own Jasper Ffforde book overwrite First Among Sequels, the proper Jasper Fforde book!

Amy has a plan to stop him before he destroys all of literature to make his book, but we need help!
Are you able to come to Swindon yourself? if not, do you know of anyone who lives in England who could come on your behalf to help stop him? If you do, could you ask them to email amygreenfordSPLATgmail.com so she can send them her plan? I will send you the invitation from the fake Jasper saying the location of the secret location, hopefully this will let you or whoever you send in your place can get close enough to stop him!

june x

I'll send off an email to Amy now - I am DEFINITELY attending the Swindon event this weekend and plan to help in any way I can!

Well, it is only half an hour down the road...

EDIT: Sorry, sorry. I'm sure you all know the story about The Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco being an aborted idea by the REAL Fforde, but he's recently updated his giveaways list with this entry to be given away free to people attending booksignings:

I sent an email to June aswell, seems like she replied to you first though...

Either way, my response...

Hello June,

I am one of the agents working alongside yourself and Amy to try and track this fake Ffforde down.

I remember you said you had received a phone call from him. Do you by chance happen to have that phone number still? If not, do you think you could email him and ask him to call you because you have something important to discuss with him (you don't actually need to speak to him again if you don't want), and quickly 1471 the number afterwards.

It would be a great help if you could

Yours,

{me}

Yes I know - agents, but a) I couldn't think what else to call us. And b) It sounded cool Smile

her reply:
Quote:
Hello {me},
The phone call came through the Hodder switchboard so I can't do 1471 and I'm not sure getting his phone number is a good idea, he was very horrible to speak to! But I'll think about it in the morning, I need to go to sleep, but I'm so nervous that I can't seem to sit still enough to stay in bed! I'm glad you are going to help us, are you going to come to Swindon yourself? I'm looking forward to meeting all the nice people who are helping us even if it is for such a serious reason!

june x

So - she'll consider it... still - even if we do get the number, I have no idea what we might say to him, but I'm sure we can come up with something.

Who is Lizzy?

Sorry I made an error in my rushed posting before.

In the letter from Jasper Fforde in the Haversham (junehaversham.wordpress.com) blog there is reference to bookcam (http://www.jasperfforde.com/bookcam.html). You have discussed it before but what was the anaomoly in the Alice in Wonderland text.

The Lizzy reference made me think of Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. She is commonly referenced as Lizzy. Elizabeth lived in both Longbourn in Hertfordshire and finally in Pemberley in Derbyshire.

I tried all 4 locations to replace the wonderland of the www.jasperfforde.com/wonderland.htm but with no success.

However I am reminded that this is on the Haversham (not the right Havisham) blog and may be a red herring.

What do you all think?

Cheers
Scott

edit Just one last thing but going over the Amy Greenford blog and found the post about the footnotes (http://amygreenford.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html) . At the end of the article she starts to use a high score 1 for things like didn't. For example didn 1 t. There are 4 1's by my count. I will chase this up.

1 - I think the phrase used was something like "hand-chatterer".

2 - From this bit of Haversham's blog, which contains an email from fffake Ffforde, the YG appears to stand for Yours Goodbye.

Does anyone know what Amy's plan is? June sent me an email that said to ask Amy about her plan. I've done so, but haven't heard back yet....

EDIT: I just did a bit of reading about Pepys on Wikipedia. Two things:

1) In the footnote, could Thursday been book jumping to Pepys' diary? He was a nautical man after all. (Has anyone bought the book yet? I ordered one from Whitby today so it might be here tomorrow...)

2) St Olave's church where Amy met Miss Havisham is also where Pepys erected a monument to his dead wife. Coincidence???
